I updated the CE suffix info in the first post. Thanks for the info. I have an A suffix drive that works in my XS54. I don't remember if I tried it in any other models.
I could find a Seagate ST3160022A but found one with and "ACE" ending. Is that compatible with the XS32?

Yes, The ACE drive should be no problem.

We're having trouble with the A only drives, and mostly in the KX50.

My hard drive crashed in my XS35 a couple of days ago, it won't format and I can't record on it. I want to replace the drive and, thanks to this forum, I found that I need to use the Maxtor 6L160P0.

I am no stranger to dealing with computer hardware, so doing the replacement is no problem. However, I am having troubles getting the case open. Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Thanks for the diagram. This is exactly what I did, but I still couldn't get the lid off. Anyway, I'll try again.

At least on the XS32, I think you have to slide it backwards a little before pulling up.. (I don't think I'm confusing it with the Tivo cover).

Hi guys,

Toshiba service knows about this forum! Probably the reason all the service manuals are locked out now!

BTW: you're welcome Rick!
did anybody download them?

Well, the net being the net, it's too late to lock the door now. Someone will surely already have them and it only takes one.
I've got the 34 and the 35, if anybody needs them.

This is huge:

I tried a 60GB 2.5-Inch laptop IDE drive in the Toshiba RD-XS54, and it works! I simply used a 3.5-to-2.5 IDE converter PCB (prevalent on eBay, and others I'm sure), set the HDD jumper to Cable Select, and away it went.

The specs are as follows:

S/N: 5PJ6W0JX (that's a zero there in case you're wondering)

Model: ST96812A

P/N: 9W3882-304

Firmware: 3.06 (original; un-flashed)

Date Code: 07493

Site Code: WU

The drive runs at 5400 RPM's, with an 8MB buffer, and sells for 39.99 @ Geeks.com as of today's date of Jul-15, 2008 (happy 25th to ME ).

This does NOT work in the KX50/XS52 machines.

I'll include pictures of the setup later.

Which 160 GB drive works in the KX50 ?
I asked a TV repair place to replace my HD and burner. I had a Seagate and LG as recommended on these boards. He replaced the burner and it works fine. However he said that once I replace the hard drive and if something happens I can't put back the original one. Since my original is still going strong, he recommended not to do it. Is there any truth to this? I thought HD's were interchangeable?
I have heard toshiba tech use a service disc to install new hard disk in the unit. Anybody can confirm this? Maybe if we can find an ISO file of this disc we will can use more disk and bigger one?

This is an old thread but one of the few where this manual is listed. While the link is appreciated, unfortunately a login and password are needed to get it. Did anyone else have success finding it elsewhere. In this age of discontinuance, one must do their best to obtain as much as possible!

I'm getting a CD with the Firmware upgrade now although I don't think the service manual is on it. Anyone who has a copy of the Toshiba RD-SX54 Service Manual please contact me! I'd hate to have to spend a few more dollars to some service rep just to send me a link!

I don't think that is the case, the issue is more if the new one will work properly... you should be able to put the old one back in with no problems, there are many stories of people on these boards swapping Toshiba HDD's pretty willy-nilly with no ill effects.

That said, why are you replacing the HDD? Just to get more space, or are you having issues? It might be best to leave it until you know you need to replace it.

XS32 owner here.

Checked back on this thread after a long time away. Got me fired up to get another HDD for insurance, this time the Maxtor 4R160L0. Will see if seller actually has it in stock. Have long ago filled up the replacement Seagate 160GB ST3160022A and need to do some serious deleting/burn-offs. Unlike others here, I have never had an issue with the HDD's, whether original or replacement. Both have never had a single hiccup and remain full for many, many months/now years. Reading many of these posts this practice would seem like russian roulette but guess that I have been lucky.

Only the stock burner (POS) gave trouble so replaced with LG-4167B. Have also ordered an LG GSA H54L to see if it will read unfinalized discs from OEM burner days which the LG-4167B will not do in my experience. Kaybee2 from UK has had success doing this very thing. Will report my success/findings when gear is installed. Have my doubts about sourcing the Maxtor 160GB but keeping fingers crossed. If this vendor turns out to be a dry hole, anyone know of a good source? Thanks

Yes, to get more space, but my current original is working just fine, so the technician advised against it for now.

I just backed up my unit by buying the recommended Maxtor 4R160L0 and the LG GSA-H10L. Total cost was roughly $100 including shipping and a well justified expense. I was even tempted to get a second hard drive but I figure that these things should be back in production by the time 2 drives and DVDs begin to go.

So far, other than it being a little finicky on occasion with DVDs being unusable, I haven't had any issues with the XS54 after having it for over 2 years and being one of the first people to get it when it came out. I don't know how long that will last but here's to hoping. I also got a backup disk of the ROM too, the latest upgrade, just in case something might happen, lol. The only thing I'm missing is the service manual, which is bugging me because Toshiba sent me to their "authorized service center" who will just want to charge me for the PDF I should get for free!

Today my sweet XS32 now is like a completely new machine. Traded out the replacement LG GSA 4167B burner for the LG GSA H54L burner which I can state emphatically reads everything out there including CD and OEM unfinalized. Have waited a long time for this kind of full featured compatibility.

Replacement 160GB HDD Maxtor 4R160L0 works like a charm as well. If only Tosh had put this kind of quality into the OEM components in the first place. Oh Well. Both drives around $85 shipped...a steal for this kind of editing machine.

Wish I had the HDD array setup that some out there do with the Polaroids and the Philips. Have forgotten if anyone is doing this with the XS32. But I shouldn't complain as my HDD count is now only 3 including the OEM...total 400GB. I know some are running multi-terabyte systems out there.

Hi folks!

I just got a brand new sealed Seagate 160go ST3160022A for my XS32 but that doesn't work!!!!!! When I power on the unit. I got an 9xxx error message and the XS stop responding. I have to unplug the unit to shutdown it. In my pc the hard disk work fine. I have check the disk for bad sector, etc and everything was fine.

For the people who have installed this model of hard disk, wich firmware version in the unit do you have?

On the first post it's specified this hard disk is suposed to work...but not for me.

Any suggestion?
Firmware shouldn't matter. I believe your HDD is fine and you likely have a cable connection problem with one of the drives...probably the Burner. Check the disk cables and make sure all are properly inserted. I have had cable ends appear to be fine in both the large board and mini pc style connectors on the back of the drives that were not. One cable was actually inserted too deep, such are the finicky tolerances with these things. Carefully remove and reinsert all ribbon cables including the Burner cable.

One more idea. What is the jumper pin setting on the new Seagate? I think it should be Master, not Cable Select. My unit is all buttoned up in the credenza and a hassle to remove to check this for you but my two previous drives (one the same Seagate 160GB) are stored and they show the Master position.

Where do you find a LG GSA H54L burner? I can only get the 55. Oh Well my 4167b works fine except for the unfinalized DVD-R's.

If I am remembering correctly there cannot be a dvd in the burner, this also causes error.

Oiler1,

Just found this out. Circuit City seems to have some available in-store only with sketchy supply. Try here and plug in zip codes near you at the bottom to see if any are around your location.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ...6#availability

To answer your question more generally, they come and go. I keep checking the same places when I Google from time to time and sometimes they show up. Admittedly an older model is less likely to have decent quantity and lack of competition sometimes makes for ridiculous asking prices, even for refurbed. The CC deal looks very good though.

The 4167B is a great burner in its own right but I am very happy about the spindles of old unfinalized discs I can now deal with properly.

I have 2 XS-32's (was lucky to get a used spare) and replaced both dead drives with LG 4167B's ( lucky I got them 4 months ago).
I am aware of the inability to read unfinalized DVD-R's from the original but at least it reads unfinalized DVD-RW's from originals fine. I haven't had a problem until now.

When I went to cancel finalization it failed and I can't see the shows anymore. I tried to insert the DVD-RW into another machine and it hung the machine. Everything was frozen, until I turned off the power bar and wait 10 minutes so the door would open again. Whew, I was in a panic state at the time.

The lesson learned here is never unfinalize DVD-RW's before you had a chance to watch the shows. Occasionally the cancel finalize doesn't work. I had to use Nero full erase disk function to get it to be usable again.

Thanks for the info. I Googled and got nothing. I live in Canada so I doubt if they will ship up here. I got about 12 unfinalized disks, with nothing great on thenm though. Fortunately my original came back alive for one day I I managed to finalize everything I could think of. I wonder if anyone can finalize a few disks for me? I think there was a place that did it somewhere.
