before hsu: 8" audioscource ( the paradigm pdr12 has been in the shop since jan.)

Unpacking

trying side placement.

I still have some tweaking but sounds pretty good. I seem to be getting a small crackling noise when i push it hard, not sure what it is though. I'll be in contact w/ hsu in the am.

Hey I have that same popcorn machine (the red one sitting on the fridge)! I love the hot dog roaster too.

I'd be careful you might blow your center right off the column.

Nice pics lvis, thanks for sharing! Do you have a zoomed out picture of your HT room? Also, what are the dimensions of the room?

Have you tried running the subwoofer in maximum output mode (both ports open, no turbo, 25Hz mode set on amplifier)?

I'm not sure what the crackling noise could be. Is that a mechanical noise coming from the driver? Feel free to send an email to techsupport.

Thank you very much!

Wow! That thing looks like some kind of biohazard containment unit.

In time you'll figure out how to get the 3.3 sounding great, not just "pretty good" (took me awhile), Only part that concerns me is this crackling sound you speak of. ive never heard this even when pushing it really hard.

Could you be over driving the sub. I have heard people describe a "Clack" when the sub bottoms or is overdriven. Looks good though. I am sure you will enjoy it once you have it %100 dialed in

I thought it might be overdriven too, but it was'nt even that loud.
I pretty much know "good" bass, I was the drummer/sound-man along with our bass player in a local band for about 8 or 9 years.

leo at hsu said it's possibly the driver. do these subs need a "warmup" period?
can it be that i'm being too picky?
If i stand back a few feet then i cannot hear the crackling. I just figured for 800 bucks and it being one of the top subs that it should be perfect.
My money is on the clacking being one or more of the many items in the room rattling or otherwise making noises. Use some test signals to determine what frequency and level energizes the clacking, then figure out where it's coming from.

lvisneau, how much space (depth, in feet) do you have behind your chairs? Also, do you have any space in a rear corner to place the subwoofer?

I have met and talked with Leo, he is a good guy.

AFAIK, these subs do not need a warm up period. I can tell you that crackling is not normal and if coming from the sub itself, is something to be concerned with.

Double check the gain control on the amp and set it between 9-10 o'clock (if not already) and see if the noise is still there.

Understood. Well, I hope you can figure what the issue is and start enjoying that sub.

When you here the crackling noise, try using your hand to push against the cabinet wall opposite the driver. That was happening with my HO. It was the sound of the cabinet wall vibrating against the internal brace.

the picture that you see is only the front row. the 2nd row is close to the rear wall. there is no other place in the room to put it.

tried it. but did not seem to make a difference. but that could still be it. how do i fix that?

Did you push hard? I was able to reduce the rattling, but not completely eliminate it by installing some corner braces inside the sub. But it sounds like this may not be the problem with your sub.

I really only noticed the rattling when running 16hz test tones at high volume.

It's probably the driver botomming out.

Don't do that too much or you will need a new sub soon.
The driver was not bottoming out. If it was, then pushing the cabinet with my hand would not make the sound go away.

When I first got my MBM to go with the HO it made a noise I did not like. I got a screwdriver and tightened every screw I could find and no more noise. Just something to try. Also do you have the pad under the turbo?
Out of curiosity try removing the speaker cover and test for the noise just to make sure the speaker isnt hitting the cover itself..i could have sworn this happened to me once (it was more of a tapping sound not crackling tho), although i put the cover back on and haven't heard any noises sense then so not sure what i was hearing at the time.

I have the subs gain knob set a little past the 9 o'clock position and the sub output set to -5db on my receiver.
