DVD player to use with Sanyo PLC-xp57 projector

My brother is buying a Sanyo PLC-xp57L projector and we are looking for some good options for a DVD player. It's resolution is XGA 1024x768 only 4:3 though. It will accept 720p or 1081i inputs. Has DVI, RGB, D-Sub, BNC, and S-video inputs. This is coupled with a 100" screen.

The DVD player needs to be sturdy, this stuff gets move around a lot. He doesn't want to spend a fortune on it. I suggested something with a DVI output, but from what I read it's not an option for 4:3 output. Is DVI worth it? There are lots of DVD players with RGB outputs so that might be an option.

Just looking for some suggestions -- Anyone have any moderate priced options?

There should be no conflict between 4:3 and DVI. All DVD players should support both 4:3 and 16:9 displays on all outputs via a menu selection.

From the specs I see here: http://www.projectorcentral.com/Sanyo-PLC-XP57L.htm the DVI port has HDCP, so any HDMI player should work with an HDMI->DVI cable.

Component will work also; most current players are limited to 480p over component for copyprotected discs, although firmware hacks are available to circumvent this.

I've been pleased with my Oppo players. You can see feature comparisons here: http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_comp.html. Prices range from $149 to $229 new, somewhat less refurbished from Oppo.

For a bit less money, the Sony DVP-NS75H got a good review here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=133#SonyDVP-NS75H%20(HDMI)

Hey, thanks. I'll pass the info on to him. I've checked out the Oppo players but they seemed a little on the high end of his budget. I'm not sure he would opt for a refurb. The Sony might do the trick, good review, right price.

Be weary of most sony dvd players , most won't play newer titles due to the new copyright sony has implemented on newer dvds..

We talked about it today, he'll get something local so he can return it. Cost issue stems from the fact he needs to buy two units. He needs two outputs, one standard the other with closed captions.

He mistakenly thinks that with two identical units they will sync up using the remote to control them both, but I've tried it before and there always seems to be a lag in one machine or the other.
