Sending True HD to pre AMP with HDMI

I just watched the HD DVD version of Pulse.
Strange; on the cover it stated dolby digital 5.1, but the disc had both DD Plus and Dolby True HD!

My pre-amp (Lexicon MC12b EX HD) have HDMI inputs that supports HDMI picture and HDMI sound.

From what I have read here there is not yet out a pre-amp/receiver that can process DD True HD in bitstream.
Because of this I have always sended out the signal from my Toshiba in converted PCM signals.

Just for fun I tried to set the Toshiba A1 to send out bitstream instead of PCM when playing the movie with True HD.

I was kinda curious, didn't know what to expect, guessed silence.

To mu surprise the sound was there. I did press the infobutton on my pre-amp - it said it did receive DTS signals...

I did not compare the sound. Maybe it is better to send out the True HD/DTS Master Audio signals in bitstream even thogh the pre-amp/receiver isn't "ready" for it?

Any comments?

You will want to set the A1 up to send PCM over HDMI. PCM is TrueHD in that the TrueHD gets converted to PCM in the player and sent over HDMI. Both PCM and TrueHD are lossless.

You have to be sure your reciever can recieve PCM over HDMI. only some can.

the reason you got DTS over HDMI when sending bitsream is because DD plus and DTS get downconverted to DTS in bitstream. Remember HDMI can carry regular DD and DTS not just the new formats of sound.

Thanx for the input!
Glad I did select PCM

The Lexicon do accept PCM over HDMI. Very nice...

I have searched the group, but I am still unsure about this;
is it any loss in quality when the HD DVDplayer converts True HD etc. to PCM?
If not, it isn't any real advantage in having a reciever/pre-amp that does suport DD True HD in bitstream... ?

The conversion to PCM is in the digital domain. Shouldn't be an issue like D->A via DACs and analog sections. There is no advantage to having the new HD/lossless bitstreams passed with HDMI 1.3. In fact, doing so may cause other issues during playback. Go to the Amps, Receives, and Preamp forum and read the "sticky" thread "why you don't need a receiver with HDMI 1.3".
