ive noticed mine is ridiculously loud when in full fan mode. good thing just closing the front window of the tv stand stops most of the noise. and people complain about their stand alones being loud hah this thing is way louder then my toshiba hd-a2 WAY louder..

so everyone else explain how yours is installed and how loud it gets

Mine is out in the open and set vertical. It doesn't even get lukewarm and makes no discernible noise whatsoever.

I only notice it during quiet moments in vid games and start up. Has not been an issue for movie playback.

Sorry I can't hear you, let me turn the ps3 off.

Thought mine was loud before. Just hooked up the Nyko intercooler and now it sounds like the space shuttle taking off. Ok, exagerrate, but it is still very loud without or especially with the intercooler and sitting in the open.

I picked can notice but only if it dead quiet...for me its not a issue. My TV is twice as loud and my projector is 3 times as loud my Dish 622 is about the same. Not a problem here.

Ditto for me.

mine's def noticeable when running a BD movie, I'm getting a little annoyed by it.. may try to set it up vertically and see if it's better.

by comparison my XA2 is much quieter as is my 8300HD box.

LOL.

The noise situation with the PS3 is complicated because it has two fan modes. The initial fan noise is annoying enough, but the fan that comes on when the unit heats up (I call it the turbo mode) would put a space shuttle launch to shame. This turbo mode must be avoided at all costs; it's noticeable even during the loudest movie scenes.

As far as the regular fan noise is concerned, it's not too bad during most movie scenes, but it is annoying during the quiet scenes. Alas, for listening to serious music, it's really unacceptable. This is disappointing to me because otherwise the audio from multi-channel SACD's from the PS3 is really quite nice. I can eliminate the noise completely by closing the doors of my A/V cabinet, but then I have only about 15 minutes before the heat makes the fan turn on to turbo mode. I'm working on installing some computer fans inside my cabinet to try and solve this problem.

My PS3 is loud but my TV (a JVC HD-ILA) is even louder. So, it does not matter while watching a movie. However, it could become an issue if I am listening to a CD or SACD. I don't have any SACDs and I also have a SqueezeBox 3. I think the Squeezebox is a better music player than the PS3. I can't believe how loud my TV is!!

Mine is set out in the open, horizontal, with nothing surrounding it whatsoever; from day one i noticed it was quite loud and was miffed how people were saying it was totally silent.

doesn't stop me from watching/using though

Mine is on the bottom shelf of an open cabinent laying on its side. I don't hear any fan noise from it. My TV is very quiet, a sony a2000, and if my receiver is off, I will hear the tv fan just barely, but no ps3 noise.

Luckily, the fan noise from my InFocus projector drowns out any noise from the PS3.

It would be nice if they relased a software that could completely turn off the fans when listening to music. It shouldn´t affect the processor very much if i only play music, should it? Same goes with Blu-ray. I think PS3 could manage a full feature without letting the fans go(or is it only one fan inside?).

We sit about 9ft from the TV where the PS3 is. For movies, I cannot hear it at all. For games I play closer and I can I hear the initial boot noise but then it is quite.

BTW why are the games about 10 times louder than the movies? I have the volume on my receiver set such that for movies the PS3 is right on par with normal TV and my HD-DVD player, but when I put a game in I have to turn down the volume on the game itself to the lowest settting, and turn down the reciever -20dB from what it is when playing Blu-ray disc...anyone else notice this as the norm?

To the OP: the questions need to be put into context. You did not specify whether I can hear PS3 from 1 ft or from 12 ft. Therefore the answers people will be leaving are completely meaningless.
To make it clearer: if it's quiet in my room, then from 1-2 feet I can hear PS3. But from my regular watching position (8-9 ft) I cannot hear PS3 at all. So, which option should I click?

To those who keep posting FUD like "PS3 is louder than a space shuttle at launch" I only have one work: BS. PS3 has never been loud in my family room for the last 6 months. It was left running for hours (playing games, watching Blu-Ray, etc) and I have yet to hear it to go into what you call a "turbo" mode. And I do not live on a North pole. So, unless you have your PS3 sitting in a Sahara desert (or in a closed cabinet), it should be quiet. Of course, no one says it is as quiet as a completely fanless device. But it is certainly one of the quietest devices with fan cooling I have come across so far. I remember my old panel was irritating the hell out of me with its two little fans until I upgraded to the current TV. PS3 is nowhere close to that noise level.

My HTPC sits next to the PS3 and the HTPC makes more noise so it's a non-issue for me. The only time mine gets loud is when I'm running F@H, but that's to be expected.

Mine is mildly audible from 6' or less in a dead silent room. I have a JVC HDILA as well who's fan noise masks the PS3 normally.

I have had mine since day 1... Nov. 17th.... got it at launch, bright and early in the morning. It has been on... a lot since then. And since Folding @ Home started its been on even more... Blu-ray, PS3 games, on line gaming, music listening, picture viewing, chatting on the PSN, downloading.. basically everything the PS3 does.. I do all the time and I cannot hear it during a movie from 8ft away on my set up. If its been running F@H all day I can hear it from 8ft away but its still pretty quiet.

My PS3 is very quiet.

There is chatter on the PS3 forum in Europe where people have discovered that there are 2 different types of fans being manufactured in the PS3. There is speculation that one type of fan is loud and the other is quiet. It seems that the type of fan you get depends on where the PS3 was manufactured (China or Japan). I unfortunately got the loud fan. See the thread on the Europe forum for more info: http://community.eu.playstation.com/...ad.php?t=76030

i have no issue whatsoever with my ps3. My ps3 is very quiet.

Mine sits in a closed cabinet horizontally with some low speed fans built into the cabinet. This works fine for movie watching and just browsing, but it heats up during extended game play and F@H session unless I open the cabinet door a little. I've added an extra low speed fan to help out, and since that addition it never goes into full "turbo" mode, but the overall "noise" is now higher with the extra fans cooling my gear. Still, it's not enough to notice above the normal background noise from the world outside...

No worries...
I can only notice it when the fan is running on high speed, otherwise i hardly notice it even when the room is totally quiet.

Dead silent with me too.

Mine's quiet now. Set horizontal on an 100% open HDTV stand shelf. Only time I hear anything out of it is when the BD player makes noise when first loading a disc.

By the way, I do notice that ambient temperature and ventilation make a lot of difference. When I forgot to turn the air conditioning on one day and left the PS3 on while Folding@Home, I came back and the fan had set into "turbo mode". Ambient temperature in the room had crept upwards of 83F (I live in Florida). Normally I keep it at <80F and everything works great.

Look at Iggster's setup above, for instance. Not much ventilation (even with a fan it'd be limited). Not surprising that it's a loud component in such an environment.

Heh, mine's whisper quiet now too. I finished installing two 120mm 1600rpm Scythe fans in the back of my cabinet and the PS3 fan never goes into high speed mode, even when Folding.

Can't hear mine unless I'm 1 foot away.

How can anyone say they don`t hear the noise from the PS3??? they must have something wrong with there hearing! when it starts up it`s pretty quiet, but in turbo mode it`s VERY VERY loud!
