What is wattage of PS3 as Blu-Ray player vs. other Blu-ray players

How many watts does the PS3 consume? I've read reports from 180-360 watts!!! That's a lot of energy. The PS2 only consumed 45 watts. It isn't going to get any energy star certifications, that's for sure.

By comparison, the Samsung BDP-1000 consumes 51 watts.

ps3 consumes around 180 watts during bd playback and can peak at 360 watts but average is 180-90 watts also due to so much power consumption it outputs ALLOT of heat... my hd-dvd player in comparasion consumes 20 watts

show me how you can get your ps3 to peak at 360 watts...

I'm pretty sure I've seen some web sites that actually tested the power consuption of the new gaming consoles in various play modes. The PS3 was no where near 360 watts at any time. I think it peaked at 210W maybe? Look it up it will do you more good than asking here and getting 10 different answers

Just because it has a 380 power supply doesn't mean it peaks at that.

F@H uses 185 or so. Id say 200 is probably the max.

Does F@H use the GPU? I doubt it, so i wouldn't be surprised if peak/max power was well above 200 watts.

I have no way to test its power usage but I will say that my electric bill went up over $12/month from occasional (but not 24/7) F@H crunching on the PS3. With that kind of increase, I'll stick to the PCs in the house for running my altruistic applications.

If you turn it off when not in use and only use it for watching movies then I really doubt you would notice it on your power bill.

I turn mine off when not in use because it turns my equipment closet into a sauna after 4 hours or so. I leave the door open for extended use.

I don't know the wattage, but I did measure the temperature after running the PS3 inside my closed A/V cabinet for about an hour. It was 102°.

200 is not the max possible... here are the results from a very good test (Link to full test below but its in german!)

Standby: 10 Watt
On/Idle/Gaming: all 180 Watt (so no real idle mode it seems)
Bluray Movie: >200

So yes a peak 360 Watt is possible but its a peak so nothing you bother about and if you see what your high end PC uses at home you might understand why. On the other hand that "raw" power is the reason why the PS3 is so quick with loading since it takes 180 Watt right from the start most of the machine is running all the time instead of idle modes.
Stand alone players, especially when one chip design, are specialized to play and the decoding is strict hardware based (meaning decoder chip), while the PS3 uses the cell chip and a software based player. So yes it takes a lot more power compared to ~40-50 Watt (BD playback) of Stand alone units but its not so specialized and can't be as a flexible console.

The bottom one is the one I have read before, the top one mentions the PS3 using 380W but notice the article is pre-launch

The bottom article actually has field testing, and it should be noted that the PS3 never peaked past 200W, whether gaming, or running BR movies.

My kill-a-watt just measured it at 180-185W whether playing a game or watching a movie. Fan in normal (not turbo) mode.

My HD-A1 plays at about 50W. So basically it costs $0.04 more to watch a 2 hour movie over a stand alone player.

how much does it draw with the fan in turbo mode?

mine goes into turbo after about 15 minutes

My BD10 uses 42 watts and less than 1 watt in standby mode.

So it's not going to cost the average person anywhere near as much as owning that SUV they seem to think they have to have. The PS3 power usage is small beans compared to those buying Hummers and then complaining about gas prices.

Any idea when PS3 comes with the smaller Cell processor? That Cell processor should consume less energy, but how much less?
