Oppo via HDMI set to bitstream for SD DVD's (and get pretty DTS-ES lights)
PS3 via HDMI set PCM for only BluRay (unchecking all 5.1 leaving only 7.1 in PS3 sound options).
Using this I wouldn't be "missing" anything except for any HD format indication on my Onkyo?
That's correct.... But you don't have to uncheck all the 5.1 options. If ps3 sends it 5.1 pcm, your onk can process pcm and matrix it 7.1. //Martez Haynes Hfsc

Ok cool thanks for the info. Just sucks that PCM has no flags that can tell the receiver to light up the correct audio format. I mean this is 2008 right?

Why bother doing all that? Just set the PS3 for PCM, the 875 handles it just fine. The only special case you have is when you have something's that is DD EX, in which case you have to manually select that listening mode on the 875, and there just aren't that many things with DD EX (I think I've hit one DVD with it).

Well I'd rather use my Oppo for DVD viewing - the less my expensive PS3 is used for "mere" SD DVD playback the better IMHO.
So...I purchased an 80Gb PS3 in June 2008 with the understanding the I would be able to view the latest high-end video format (1080p) as well as HD audio formats (i.e. Dolby TrueHD).
Having just purchased Iron Man on Blue-Ray (claiming TrueHD 6.1 audio) I was stoked. Connecting my new receiver (1 week old) via Monster HDMI 1.3a/b cable, I was sure that I was going to be blown away.
So...when playing the movie, the Dolby TrueHD indicator did NOT light-up on the receiver (and it's capable of ALL but THX). I checked the audio-out for BD on the PS3 (initially set to linear PCM). The Yahama manual states that bitstream should be set for an audio source sending high-definition audio. So, I changed it. Still nothing. In mutiple emails with Sony customer service, they state that I NEED to use Linear PCM for the HD audio formats via HDMI. The only A/V receivers I've seen that are capable of this are from Sony.
I don't have a huge budget (paid $500+ for this one), but would really like to take advantage of the audio from my PS3. Any suggestions for compatible receivers?
PS3 can only send HD soundtracks through PCM. As long as your receiver can process multistream PCM you can get the HD sound.
The reason you don't see it on your receiver is because the PS3 is doing the decoding. So in truth you do not really need a receiver that supportes True HD and DTS HD in order to get those tracks w/ a ps3

I'm sure you can get a Denon 2808 at a good price right now (maybe even the 3808). Either one will get you what you need.

i have the yamaha 661. my display says "mpcm" while playing blu-rays, as the receiver is not decoding anything, but getting the hd audio straight from the ps3. hit the "select" button while in movie, and it will state the audio format playing. don't worry, you're getting hd audio.
i love my 661. have you noticed that you can apply processing to audio over hdmi (except for hi def audio)? cool feature not on all receivers.
You have it configured correctly. (LPCM via HDMI) I have the smaller version of your Yamaha (V463) and it works great. PCM is the only thing you will see on the Yamaha. Like zetram said, the PS3 is doing all the leg work.

zetram,
Does this mean that, in the BD/DVD settings on my PS3, if I select "Bitstream" instead of "Linear PCM", the PS3 cannot send a Dolby TrueHD signal to my Onkyo TX-SR606 (Dolby TrueHD-capable) , even though one exists on my Blu-Ray disc ("Batman Begins", for example)?
I fought with this for 3 hours last night... stayed up way later than I should have. My HDMI cables are HDMI1.3. My receiver is HDMI1.3 capable.
When "Bitstream" is selected from my PS3 menu, I was only able to see "Dolby Digital" when hitting the "Select" button on my PS3 for audio output (and my receiver wasn't able to detect a Dolby TrueHD, either).

Yes unless you have the PS3 set to LPCM you will NOT get TrueHD. What you will get if you select bitstream on the PS3 and select TrueHD in the BD menu is Dolby Digital 5.1 sent to the receiver. Since the PS3 cannot bitstream the HD audio formats like TrueHD the PS3 will downgrade the TrueHD to DD 5.1 and send that to your receiver.
To see what the PS3 is decoding and sending just hit display on the remote while the movie is playing(I think it's the square button on the PS3 controller).

Ok awesome at least now I know what's going on.
Like I said, I fought with it for 3 hours last night (just assuming that it was me that was doing something wrong). That describes exactly what I was seeing... when selecting BitStream, I couldn't find the TrueHD track, but instead of just 1 English DD track, there were two... I couldn't for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong.
Thank you for all the info.
Thought I should pass along my experience.
I was setting up a Bose Lifestyle V30 and could not get anything more than PCM: 2.0 from the PS3.
Until I called Bose.
They had me go to HDMI Audio Output Settings and put a check by both Dolby Digital options at the top of the list. And they had me set BD/DVD Audio to Bitstream.
Works great now.
I was worried about not getting menu sounds so i reset BD/DVD Audio to Linear PCM and tried it. Not good. Back to 2.0 only.
Would someone please be so kind as to post the best settings to use on the PS3 for Video Setup? Most of the talk is on audio, which I have had some issues with as well on my Integra 9.8, but I dont know if I should select Double Scale, Normal, Full, etc.
I have a Mitsubishi HC3000, 720P, connected with a HDMI cable running through my Integra 9.8.
BTW, when I try to set the 9.8 to Passthrough, it messes up the picture. I get a pink looking menu on the PS3 where it normally is black. Anyone else have this happen?
I have figured out that I need to have the PS3 set to PCM reading the discussions here, Thanks. Does anyone know enough about the Integra to know how to set it to play best with BluRay titles? Do I need to change the settings depending on the BluRays capabilities? Or should one setting be best for all?
I dont know if I should select Double Scale, Normal, Full, etc
Those are upscaling settings for DVDs. I think it is personal preference. I prefer normal, but my wife likes double scale.

What you are describing is a well documented problem with Mitzs. I have a Mitz too and have the same problems. It has to do with how the Mitz handshakes via HDMI. Breaking and reestablishing the HDMI connection is the only way I know how to fix it. I usually change between HDMI inputs on the receiver to fix it.

Using PCM means the PS3 is doing all the leg work. There shouldn't be a need to change any settings on the Integra for BD titles.
I can't seem to find the answer, so I figure this is the best place to try...
Why can't the PS3 bitstream the HD audio codecs?
It is a hardware limitation with the HDMI chipset used from day 1 not allowing for bitstream of HD audio. A later version can, but it isn't put in the new PS3's. I don't know other than giving the bitstream advantage to stand alones motivating a selling point. As we know with the right equipment there isn't any difference between bitstream and pcm and there seems to be some rumbling from insiders saying pcm maybe the way to go instead. We'll have to see.

I didn't realize it was an HDMI chipset issue. Thank you for your response

According to my tests, BDs with Uncompressed PCM and TrueHD LPCM sounds considerably better and the same is applicable to DVDs (atleast with my setup). My recommendation is to leave the PS3 on LPCM via HDMI and set the volume to +2.
My setup is as follows
PS3 connected via HDMI to Denon 789 receiver.
Hope this helps those whose are confused about it.
I just did some experimentation and found the following results,
Batman Begins (BD) : LPCM>>Bitstream
Wall-E (BD) : LPCM>Bitstream
Kill Bill 1 & 2 (BD) : LPCM>>Bitstream
Gladiator (Special Edition DVD) : Bitstream>>LPCM
Top Gun (Special Edition DVD) : Bitstream>LPCM
According to my tests, BDs with Uncompressed PCM and TrueHD LPCM sounds considerably better and with DVDs Bitstream sounded a lot better.

Yes it seems I and others find the same. Bitstream the compressed codecs of which all DVD's have DD or DTS and LPCM for the lossless codecs. Of course the PS3 can't do bitstream of lossless, but others who have compared on other BD SA players have found the same.

I am sorry i typed it wrong the first time, bitstream does sound louder but changing to LPCM, setting the volume to +2 gives a better quality sorround sound. The first war sequence (with all the shooting areas) is where you can really tell the difference. I am not a HT guru i am just noob but thought my results might help some.

No such thing as HDMI 1.3 cables..All HDMI cables support 1.3 as long as the hardware supports it.. All you need is a HDMI 1.1 compliant receiver to get Multi channel PCM.. If you want to bitstream the HD codecs you will need to buy a stand alone BRP that supports this feature.
just a few questions. any help would be much appreciated. i have a ps3 running into the sony HT-SF1100 audio system and into samsung full hd 40" lcd tv.
firstly should i be using linear pcm or bitstream?
for some reason the audio wont send if i select hdmi as the output, it'll only send via an optical cable. and when i try sending it via hdmi it only gives me 2ch of pcm option (which it doesnt even send).
so therefore i am FORCED to send it via the optical cable which gives me dd 5.1, dts 5.1, aac and linear pcm 2 ch. 44.1/88.2/176.4/48kHz options.
it also states that some portions of the audio may not be played if i select bitstream.
i've heard linear pcm is better but why am i only getting 2 ch?
also the bitstream sounds louder which i know does not mean better but is it more defined?
sorry i know there's alot there. but it's doing my head in so any advice at all would be much appreciated...
Do you have an optical AND HDMI connection coming out of the PS3? Optical can NOT pass through the HD Audio signals. Only the HDMI Connection can. If you have both connected and the audio is coming out of the optical, no audio will come out of your HDMI connection.
The best setup is to connect the PS3 via HDMI to an AVR which has HDMI input and output. You then connect the output of the receiver to your TV via HDMI to get the best audio and video possible out of the PS3.
I have my PS3 connected to my Onkyo-606 via HDMI and the output is set to LPCM. The Onkyo is then connected to my LG 42" LCD TV via HDMI. I have it set to LPCM and all the formats that the PS3 can decode (which is pretty much everything) is output to the receiver via the HDMI connection. GREAT sound and GREAT video coming out of it. The Onkyo-606 isn't that expensive (I think it's $319 on Amazon.com) and was well worth the money.
