No sound at all from the XA2.

Hi all,

For video I'm connecting via HDMI straight to my projector display.
For sound, I'm using optical from the XA2 to my AVR (Harman Kardon 435). In the XA2 audio menu, I set Digital Out SPDIF Bitstream, Digital Out HDMI Auto.

I watched the Eagles HD DVD with no problem. Sound was indicated as DTS on the receiver's display panel.

However, I could not get any sound from Superman Returns HD DVD. The receiver's display panel showed DTS, but the speaker icons were flashing (meaning there was no detectable audio signal). I then went into the sound setting menu of the movie, tried both Dolby 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD, no go.

Any idea on what's causing the problem?

Thanks,

Your receiver may not suport high bit rate DTS!

^^^ What he said. Some older receivers are not able to support the 1.5mbps dts output of some titles.

Thanks guys, the final straw! I'm definitely gonna buy a new receiver. Now the search begins, starting with the new Onkyos, or the Marantz 4001.

Totally wrong! 1.5 mbps DTS is part of their original specs all receivers in the past 8-9 years are fully compatible. The HK 435 is no more then what 3 years old if that.

2, Superman returns HD DVD don't have any DTS tracks as far as I know, and the XA-2 don't convert the DD+ and True HD tracks to DTS either.

What you could have is that receiver is stock in DTS decoding instead of "auto" and naturally not receiving the DTS signal since the player is not passing any.

So OP before you do anything check your receiver's setting regarding this.

It's really weird, but I turned off everything, started it back up, and now have sound from Superman Returns.

Thanks,

I'm not surprised actualy, it happened to me once with another DVD player that it simply wouldn't produce any sound, these things are more like a computer these days then just electronics.
