My XA2 is defective after 21 days of ownership

I can't believe after 21 days my XA2 is going back to Amazon. I'm noticing something on HD DVD's only. I'm getting a very thin faint line that looks like it's there from a scratch on the disc. Kinda like this --------------------------going horizontal, showing itself during dark scenes. I didn't notice this while watching SD DVD's. I put in my own HD DVD's and it's there. I'm thinking it shows up after the XA2 has been on for about 40min. It took that time to show up on Feast & tonight while watching The Game, also from Netflix. I know Amazon is out of stock right now so I'm thinking of going with VE, I hate the fact that I have to pay NY sales tax. Is VE still offering prices for AVS members? I love this player, I'm so bummed

Sorry about your problems, it seems nowadays regardless of what consumers purchase we all simply cross our fingers & hope for the best.

I happen to be on the waiting list for the XA2 from amazon since I just ordered May 1st. When I first placed the order the estimated shipping date was late May or early June. Now when I checked the status of the order Amazon now states shipping between June 11th- June 19th. I don`t know if Amazon really knows when they may get any new units in but 1 1/2 months is a long time to wait after my initial order. I needed another dvd player so I also just ordered an Oppo 981 for viewing upconverted sd dvd just in case I have future problems with the XA2 when it finally arrives.

Just thought I would let you know the estimated shipping dates from Amazon on the XA2.

Good Luck !

do those lines flash or blink or whatever for just a moment or are they there all of the time in dark scenes?

do these lines goes across the whole screen?

do they happen every time? if not is there a pattern of any sort you can see?

what connection do you use to your TV... component, hdmi?

1. The lines look like they blink because you can see them in dark/shaded scenes but when color appears it is gone. The line is very faint in intensity.

2. Yes, if the whole scne is very dark the lines will go across the whole screen.

3. see no. 1

4. I use HDMI>Denon 3806>Sony KDS-R50XBR1

Last night I put in Miami Vice HD DVD, seen the faint line running horizontal, I than flipped over to SD and it is fine on the same scenes.

I saved alot buying from Amazon so I don't really want to buy from VE unless he can come close to matching Amazon. I have an A2 to use in the meantime.

is it always in the same spot and does it show up when the unit is set to 1080p and 1080i?

First things I'd do before returning the unit are:

1) Connect the player directly to the TV to eliminate the receiver switching circuit.

2) Try another HDMI cable.

Since you must have two HDMI cables to go through your receiver, I'd go directly to the display device with one and then the other to eliminate both the receiver and cables as possible causes.

It seems that there are so many problems with the machine. I only have mine for three weeks and only 10 movies played and already two major issues. I also like this machine especially for upconversion. I will be giving mine a heavy test in a few days and if it fails then I'll just get a refund. For the money I paid it should at least play a movie.

ThePrisoner,

My XA2 did the same thing, right out of the box. I am connected via Key Digital HD Python HDMI directly to my Sony 50XBR1. It is my third XA2; the first 2 "defective" units were returned for different reasons.

I had played my Netflix "Children of Men" flawlessly on my XA1. I hooked up my new XA2 and saw the line immediately in the Universal logo screen. --- ---- ------- --- in white, from left to center, about 1/4 from the top of the screen. It is not always there, it just flashes in occasionally on an HDDVD (it occurs with other titles as well).

I have described the problem as resembling a tracking error on a videotape. Sort of a white horizontal "rip." Too bad we can't adjust the tracking.

I called my guy at Tweeter, and he suggested we wait to get a unit from the next shipment. All of mine so far have been January builds, original FW. The serial # of this one is SLE71016xx, about 300 later than my last one. That one had a dts audio problem.

SIDE NOTE, on the Children of Men topic: Many users have been experiencing problems with this title. I experienced none on the XA1. I had no issues on the XA2 until I had just played the SD side and flipped it back to the HD side. Then I got the "Cannot play disc" message, tried again and got a code. I had to unplug the unit, and then all was well.

I'm going to try different hookups as stated above. I'm hping it's a bad HDMI cable but I never noticed this when I had an A1.

UPDATE: I hooked up my A2 the same way my XA2 was and it is fine, no horizontal line.

I had this same problem with my first XA2. It would show up on both component and HDMI. I haven't seen it on the replacement yet (knock on wood).

Hopefully I'll get a good one the second time around. I'm sending my XA2 out tomorrow to Amazon. My A2 looks great but man, I miss that superb upconversion of SD material I get with the XA2.
