I am about to buy the 42PZ700U and it will be used primarily for gaming.

Is there a delay/lag issue with this TV at all, concerning inputs? I cannot deal with ANY delay/lag what-so-ever.

I'm right there with you. I went to Best Buy and brought my own PS2 and Guitar Hero to test on the 50PZ700U. To me this was the one game where lag would be inexcusable. I was still able to play Guitar Hero without any problems although I could see a slight delay. I just ordered the 42PZ700U and it should be in my hands on monday.

Hmmm, I think I might have to bring my 360 to Best Buy and test it out. I play Halo 3 and Project Gotham Racing.

I think for the requirements I want that LCD is still my best option.

Oh well

I'm guessing you got stuck with a defective unit since 99% of the posters here have not experienced these problems. Just a thought.

I will post all the exact settings later tonite. Try them (write your s down first!!!!) and see if you are happy...

...The blacks are now closer to flat blacks without a noticeable white or bluish hue. Of course the blacks will not blend into the jet black bezel, but they are a very comendable dark shade of black. Not true black of course, but a darker shade. I realize that is an unrealistic wish. Even the Pioneer Kuro doesn't blend in. All flat panels have a soft whitish glow to their blacks (to some degree or another). But I have it very much minimized.

I am extremely happy with my tweaking, because it has paid off. The picture looks phenomenal out the box, but now I feel that I am "pulling" the best black performance out of the set possible.

Niiice. Looking forward to seeing your setting notes.

Panagurl isn't known for passing along bad information.

I was just wondering the same thing. If they didn't do the break-in at the factory, then just reset the counter to "0".

I'm sure there are a lot of people that buy these tv's on a whim and don't do as much research as we do here, and I can imagine the complaints they would get from someone buying a "new" tv with 100-hours of use.

BTW...I just ordered the 50PZ700U yesterday through my EPP, now the waiting game begins...

And speaking of (yes, I'm quoting myself), without searching through 170 pages, is there somewhere (that I'm overlooking) where owners have posted their settings?

I know everyone has a different preference, but I like to see others settings to get a good POV compared to mine.

Thanks

Agree - I'd like to see your original settings (from->to) as well.

Also, while I'm asking is one better than the other over standard 720/1080i? I have the room for any screen up to 60" funds are a different story..
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, I'm sure it has and probably somewhere is this thread but I have limited internet time (home with 3 girls one 2 and two 8 months) and this thread is just crazy big!
Thanks.

i was in the same boat trying to decide which size to get. they have formulas based on distance etc. get the biggest you can afford, have room for. remember that when you go to the theater the screens are huge.

My TH-50PZ750U is en route as I write this!
I picked up a 58PZ750U at BB over the weekend at a great price (I think).
It gets delivered tomorrow. I'm in a relatively new subdivisions, and occasionally when the A/C gets on, I get a little flicker of the lights. We also have the occasion power outage in our neighborhood. I let the BB sales rep talk me into buying a power conditioner. I was going to buy an UPS anyways, and thought this might serve better.
However, a lot of what I've read says I don't really need a power conditional.
Talked with a Panasonic rep and they suggested getting one, and they recommended a Belkin model (but it wouldn't arrive until late next week).
The one from BB is a Panamax 4300-PM (at $250). I found a similar Belkin model to the one Panasonic recommends, it's the PF20 model.

Specs on the Panamax are:

Level 2 Power Cleaning and Filtration
Protect or Disconnect Circuitry Yes
Thermal Fusing Yes
Catastrophic Surge Circuit Yes
Single Pulse Energy Dissipation 1650 Joules
Spike Capacity 65,000A
EMI/RFI Noise Filtration 49 db - 60 db
Line Voltage 120V, 60Hz

The Belkin specs are:

Phase 2 PureFilter circuitry with isolated video and audio filters
4720 joules of surge protection
Level 3 power protection
HiCurrent Outlet for high-power Amplifiers
Advanced over-voltage protection
240,000A maximum spike amperage
2-line telephone protection
3 pairs of gold coaxial connections for coaxial cable line protection

Since I can't wait on one to come from Panasonic, I think I'll go with the Belkin (and save about $175!).

This is my first purchase of this type (still watching a 32" crt!) so want to make sure I'm safe. What do some of you experts think?

thanks

Ahh, we're named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. I think most people born here, like myself, pronounce it "Vuh-LAY-O" while the rest of the bay area seems to say "Vuh-LAY-Ho." Actually, since in Spanish a double L = Y and a V = B (sort of) it should be pronounced "Buh-YAY-ho." Anyway, back on topic...

Sears still has the 700U for a great price, IMO...but it is only till tomorrow....they also told me that they are trying to move away from plasma and focus more on LCD. They went into their pitch of IR and burn in and how more customers want the LCD yadda yadda...if you plan on going tomorrow and want to know what the price is IM me, I am trying to respect the rules of NOT posting prices other than MSRP...

Kidding -- good surge protection is a must and power conditioning can only help, not hurt. I'm running my A/V gear through a mid-level Monster unit.

Here they are. After hours I think I have it perfected....... I used the 24 steps of grey I got from the 81 series LCD thread (saved it on a thumb drive), as well as BR disc material dark stuff.

Picture settings:

Picture Mode: Custom
Picture: 30 (26-30 is doable, but I like 30)
Brightness: 0
Colr: -6
Tint: -2
Sharpness: -25
Colro Temp: warm
Black Level: light
HD: Size 2

Service menu settings (select custom by hitting 9 on the remote (you will se the instructions for that in the service menu) so you can see how the custom picture will change since you will be viewing in custom mode):

Contrast: 00
Sub Brt: 80A
Tint: FF
Color: 37
All Drv: E5
All Cut: 92

Thats it. If I didn't say it don't touch it in the service menu. Just the things I mentioned. There are more adjustments like B-cut, G-cut, etc. But by changing the "All drv" and "All Cut" they all change in concert. Also, write down all your values before you adjust them. It is on you if you choose to enter the service menu. It is basically fine adjustments that the average Joe doesn't care/know enough to use. Not really scary if your careful.

I had the set calibrated, but wasn't happy with the black level after some time with the new calibrated set. i decided that I really don't care about what the numbers say on equipment (which can be flawed as well), I wanted real world performance. So I used the service menu and after much effort I think I have it performing optimally in trems of maximum black level without sacrificing detail.

If you try these settings see what you think.

First adjust the basic picture menu settings. Then find a good scene where there is a black suit with plenty of wrinkles in it. Pause it, then pull up the service menu. Make the adjustments I noted and watch things improve!

Happy tweaking!

I am using my 24 inch LG 246WP right now. Something to note is that I have my cable box connected to the component inputs and there is no visible noise in the guide menu like there was with the Panasonic. I took my xbox360 to the store and tried it with a Samsung 46 inch 71 series monitor. I was very impressed how the 120hz virtually eliminated the motion blur and made the game play smoother. I'll be picking one up next week.

I experimented with my camera for about an hour before I took those pics, and that's the best I could get. As amazing as they look, it still looks much better in person. I just couldn't get my camera to do justice to the images.

Holy bejesus Chris, those pics looks fantastic! Makes me want to park my butt down and purchase a PS3. Look at the black level details from those games!

Keep in mind I calibrated this strictly for optimal Blu Ray performance.

For games you may want to increase the color slightly and POSSIBLY decrease the brightness slightly...and thats it.

For HDTV you may want to decrease the brightness noticebly (set at -5 to -10).

Standard Def Tv crushes blacks with the oriinal settings so you would want to increase brightness. (I dont do this because I could care less about SDTV PQ)

All I do is I set brightness at -10 for HDTV and for gaming I may increase color and set it at -2.

Also, each HDTV channel comes in a little different, so you coul dreally tweak brightness for each channel, but to me that is reidiculous, so I just set brightness at -10 which is great for all HDTV channels except HBOHD which crushes blacks at that setting.
What should the vivid settings be? I have it at all 0's right now

also:
OK guys per EchoTony I am using his settings to start with... Can you give me any ideas to tweak out what I have?

D.V.E. setup. I did the DVD over HDMI calibration for cinema and custom at night, since that's

when we watch movies. We use cinema or custom, depending on disc and what looks better.
I did the vivid and standard settings during the day, since that's when we watch TV mostly. I figure the HDTV stuff will look good on one of those settings day or night.

Current settings:
Custom:
Picture +14
Brightness +5
Color -3
Tint -1
Sharpness -10
Color Temp Normal
Color mgmt off
cats off
Black Level: ?
HD: Size ?

Standard:
Picture +19
Brightness +14
Color 0
Tint +3
Sharpness -21
Color Temp Cool
Color mgmt Off
cats off
Black Level: ?
HD: Size ?

Cinema:
Picutre +16
Brightness +17
Color -1
Tint +2
Sharpness -20
Color Temp Normal
Color mgmt Off
cats off
Black Level: ?
HD: Size ?

Vivid:

Other Adjust menu:
Video NR: ?
3d Y/C filter: Grayed out
Color matrix: Grayed out
Block NR: ?
Mosquito NR: ?
Black level: Light
3:2 pulldown: ?

any tweaks or changes welcome... I do not have access to a calibration dvd... so if you could lend a hand I would be in your debt....

OK you've pasted the same message in 5 different threads so far. If we wanted a Rear Projection TV we'd have one. Laser, DLP, LCD, whatever it's still an RPTV and that's not what we like or want. If you want it that's fine, but go tell your homies in the RPTV forum.

Oh and that webpage you linked is the worst webpage i've seen since 1996

Laser is RP? Are you sure? One of my customers works for Novalux and says it really is the plasma killer.
