NBA Western Conference finals may be served up in 3-D HD

The Arizona Republic reported May 4 that 3-D HD technology might be used for the presentation of a Western Conference finals game if the NBA Phoenix Suns advance to the finals.

Quoting Suns president Rick Wells, the paper reported that the team was discussing with the league the possibility of exhibiting a game at the U.S. Airways Center in 3-D.

The league first presented closed-circuit HD 3-D coverage in Las Vegas during this season's NBA All-Star Game. It marked the first time a sporting event had been presented live in HD 3-D. For that production, the PACE Fusion 3D HD camera system was used.

Clips from that production were shown during the Sony press event on the eve of NAB2007 using a Sony SXRD projector.

And 90% of the posters gripe about HD and now they are going to throw 3D into the mix. Oh boy this ought to be a riot. At least the microblocking will now be in 3d!

Does anyone ever see a time when the glasses may not have to be worn? Maybe something like halograms or holograms or whatever it's called?

When I got a chance to see it in Las Vegas we still had to wear the glasses. The 3D was pretty excellent though. Not sure how this would be once it got to the user end.

I saw it in Vegas at the NBA All-Star Game and it was pretty good. The 3-D effect was very clear. And yes, you did have to wear the glasses.

Probably, but for now here's the deal: Using electronic display to simulate visual depth perception as seen in the real world, we need to see two different images, one for each eye. The purpose of the glasses is to allow each eye to see a different image, which are acquired from different physical positions.

Could you use one red for one eye and one blue for the other, contact?
Anything but those dork glasses. Cutting edge technology and watch it with glasses from your cereal box.

Yes. Years ago, I dyed one of my contacts red and the other blue with some food coloring overnight, and achieved the same effect, for the most part. It made driving far to frightening, though! Had to take those suckers out, but it was pretty cool for a while.
