Pioneer claims Universal is going format neutral

This was posted in the HD DVD software forum, but I think it's appropriate here. If I understand its translation correctly, the article claims that Pioneer guys are saying that Universal is backing out of HD DVD exclusivity.

However, Toshiba claims to know nothing about this, and Universal has not yet commented.

---

Universal will angeblich exklusive Unterstützung der HD DVD aufgeben

Certainly hearsay at this point but if true, the HD DVD erosion will hasten.

I hope it's not true. If blu-ray doesn't have any competition, we'll never get a fully functional blu-ray player. So far it's just rumor though, like the 2 million hd-dvd order from Wal-mart. Though at least that rumor was started by a company that was actually involved and not a competitor.

Sames issues for Disney, and except for BD+, Fox. They're missing a good slice of the market. Do they have a slice of BD IP worth protecting? For Sony it's sink or swim.

One slice seems bigger than the other, and it also seems to be growing faster.

Universal going neutral would be a bigger gain than Disney.

Who knows what is motivating Fox.

Interesting news (although I would still consider it a rumor at this point). A few weeks back, Bill Hunt mentioned that Universal was heavily investigating the Blu-Ray disc replication process. If this rumor is true, this is huge news for Blu-Ray....

There's an article in the Pygmy Gazette claiming that Sony will begin supporting HD DVD soon, with an official announcement on June 6th at 6:00pm EST.

Didn't I see this "Pioneer claims Universal going neutral" news item a while (like months) ago already? I'm pretty sure I did.

More rumors. I'll believe when I hear it straight from Universal

I dunno, but this article is dated today.

Please let this be true... I really want this war to end so HDM can move forward!

Huh? I don't what superfraglisic player you want, but my PS3 is fully functional to me.

Wow....this is great news if its true. Having two formats was good for competition in the beginning but now we need a unified format to move forward with.

The word Gullible comes to mind

Great news for those looking for a DRM infested single format with bloated player prices.
I don't believe it at this point but would be great for HD enthusiasts.

Prices are coming down this fall, Sony said this already: http://news.digitaltrends.com/article12357.html

I doubt Kornblau would allow Universal to go neutral at this point

Is there an IR adapter available for it yet? Last I checked, there wasn't, but I do know some where trying 3rd party adapters.

Lack of IR (or at least a good 3rd party reasonably priced Bluetooth capable universal remote) is a deal killer for me.

Well the latest insider in the Insider thread is from Universal (albiet Music) but the rudimentary Bio says Blu-Ray / HD-DVD and DVD.
PS I dont really have a format preferance other than software cost needs to come down. This is not early VHS, DVD years tech has come a long way. The media cost is simply to get a ROI faster than before to show shareholders profit, I know thats business but it doesnt make me as a consumer happy.
Cheers

I don't know how credible or not credible this report is, but it seems to contradict what Penton-Man's sources told him. About a week ago, he posted in another thread the following:

Uni's recent decision to remain red exclusive for the remainder of the year is now rather common knowledge to all those in the biz in L.A. county. I guess bad news travels fast.
I really think that if they had gone neutral by this summer, it would have greatly expedited the unequivocal end of this format waror at least marginalize HD DVD to the tinniest of niches.

Penton-Man has a lot of credibility here and AFAIK his sources have proven to be reliable; additionally, he is a BD supporter and would have no reason to spin the information here.

Universal Music has always been in the Blu-ray camp as well.

It's the other arm of Universal which is the important one.

FUD.

Universal and Universal Music are two seperate entities. Universal Music has been releasing BD from day 1.

Yes I have their NIN concert HD DVD that was also released on BD. Not anything new about Universal Music also doing BD.

Here is an interesting post by jimby_99 in regards to getting Dolby TrueHD on the NIN release on BD:

If it meets your needs, good for you. I want a player in my audio rack though, that supports all of the "optional" features of blu-ray. That's not going to happen until they finalize the specs hopefully before the end of the year. Though we still don't have information yet on BDi.

That lack of functionality is supposedly what's holding up a number of blu-ray titles.

Superman 3 is a Warner movie, and is already out on HD DVD too.
