Halo 3 pre-orders over 4 million?

Xbox Evolved is reporting Gamestop officials are saying 4 million Halo 3 pre-orders have been taken:

According to Gamestop officials, over four million preorders have been made for Halo 3 on Xbox 360. Xbox Evolved has verified this information at five different Greater Cincinnati Gamestop locations, including Gamestop stores, EB Games stores, and Funcoland stores, all under the same umbrella. This information was verified at all locations, however company a document showing this information was not revealed.

In the coming months, if this information is verified this would be the most preordered videogame of all time. Many of Gamestop's employees believe that a large portion of the preorders are being made by consumers that don't even own a Xbox 360, that are just waiting for the price of the system to go down.

In comparison, Grand Theft Auto IV's combined PS3 and 360 preorders at the chain of stores comes in a very distant second. Microsoft reported three weeks before the release of Halo 2 in 2004 that the combined retail outlet preorders for the title was 1.5 million, which at the time was a record in itself. Gears of War, the best-selling title on Xbox 360 has worldwide barely cracked the four million mark. If this is all true, it is very likely that Halo 3 will outsell even Halo and Halo 2 combined. We will have more as it develops."

If true what do you think will be the next game to top these numbers?

I'm really in the minority then..

And 4 million pre-orders for a video game is a big accomplishment to say the least..
And this doesn't include places like Best Buy, Walmart and other such stores......if true!
If it weren't for me, they'd be at only 3,999,999 which wouldn't sound nearly as good!
Very impressive. This surprises me, because most people I knew were disappointed in Halo 2. Nevertheless, I know a lot of people still love Halo 2.
my bet is that 3 millino of them are PS3 lovers and have not came out of the closet yet for the 360 for Halo in general. I know guys who on this forum and PS forums love Halo, but wont buy it because its on the 360 so what they do is buy PC for halo and play it on there and love the game.... im one of them.

No wonder gamestop is making money. That article shows they are making bank off keeping a list of who can buy it first. I'd imagine it's decent interest on $20-$40 mil over six months; all for basically nothing.

Halo 2 hits 5 million players!

Moments ago, we watched the odometer of Halo 2 players roll over the 5,000,000 mark. Today also happens to be the 2.5-year anniversary of launch. Here's to continued growth of 2 million players per year!

If you're curious, "ultra theodore" is the 5 millionth player.

(This number refers to the number of unique Live accounts that have played Halo 2 online, not including guests)

Edit - I also just noticed that we're a few hours away from 700 million unique multiplayer games on Live. (The largest number, player-games, where each game counts once per player in it, will hit 5 billion in a few weeks)

So, 5 million people total have played Halo 2 over 2.5 years, yet there are 4 million preorders. This game better be good
post #10 of 40
If that is true and they all count towards the launch day sales, Halo3 will smash Halo 2's record of $125,000,000 in single day sales. halo 3 could be somewhere near $300,000,000 if some of those are for the Legendary edition.

No, it says 5 million gamer tags have played Halo 2. That doesn't correspond to the actually number of people who have played the game, and it doesn't correspond to the number of Xbox Live! members who have played it, either.
Damn. So much for my idea of ebaying the collector's edition.

BTW anyone want to buy some of these preorders off me? I have a million or so to unload.
This is actually pretty amazing. Someone mentioned above this is just GAMESTOP, let alone amazon, best buy, wal mart, Target. I barely got around to preordering Halo 2 so I imagine there will be a huge rush on day 1 for non-pre orders.

The game is still months away too.....
That seems pretty hard to believe. 4 million pre-orders at just one store chain? Color me skeptical. How would going to 5 local stores in Cincinatti tell how many copies have been pre-ordered for the entire chain?

I could see 4 million for all stores, but that would have to include Wal-Mart, Best Buy, CC, Target, etc...

The article's author doesn't even seem all that sure.

"If this is all true, it is very likely that Halo 3 will outsell even Halo and Halo 2 combined. We will have more as it develops."

Wait a minute, you just told us it was true. Now you're saying "if" it's true? Hmmm.... Sounds like a way just to get more hits for their website ads.

Yeah hard to believe. They are sitting on 240 million dollars of pre-order love and with 4600 stores each store has averaged 869 pre-sales each? No F'in way... Laughable. So each store is going to get roughly 1000 copies then? ha ha ha

I preordered Halo3 from Amazon in October last year. At the time it was showing a march release.
Amazing how many people will put money down on pre-orders of products that won't have supply limitations.
But but but but, if I give them my money I'm more hardcore right?

Seriously, I think it makes some people feel closer to the game even if they are in reality no closer at all.

It's no different than pre-ordering a movie off amazon. It's conveinet and you're guaranteed a copy (hopefully). For me, I got a good discount on pre ordering by getting free MS points from Best Buy. I was going to get Halo3 anyway so that incentive sealed the deal.

To top it off, I won't have to worry about making sure I get to the store early to get my copy on launch day.

Amazon doesn't charge your credit card until it ships, so it costs nothing to preorder. Just like all my BD/HD DVD preorders. The creditcard isn't charged until the title ships.
I'm going to wal-mart 15 minutes before 12 p.m. Did the same thing last time and there was only about 5 people waiting there. They had about 25 copies in-stock.
I bet every store will have a midnight release. and a few will sell prematurely.

Hope the beat shows them the servers can handle it. It would be the funniest thing for LIVE to go down with a million+ getting on 1 game at the same time.

have fun kids

Sure, Gamestop require at least $5 down on a game and that and apparenlty a lot of people are compelled to give it to them for some strange reason.

LOL, now that you put it that way it does smell fishy.. I doubt most stores have 100..

But it's not like I'm going to invest $60 more than I usually do one month and wait
for my matured $62.50 or whatever so I can withdrawl it and buy the game later.

It costs ME nothing to pre-order it whether they charge my card or not if you think
about it.

Also, as far as the one chain, 4 million orders... I tend to think that sounds high,
but then again, one smaller Gamestop here told me a month ago that they had
over 120 pre-orders already at their single location.
The number is surprising for just one vendor. As someone already suggested, the number would be more realistic if it included all pre-orders.

"Gamestop's employees believe that a large portion of the preorders are being made by consumers that don't even own a Xbox 360, that are just waiting for the price of the system to go down."

Yeah right. Is this some grassroots silly attempt to somehow force MS to drop the price of the Premium or Core?

Having read this one quote, I give this chap John Olin and Xbox Evolved as much credibility as Barry Bonds.

But then again doing the math that store needs to have around 900 as an average per store to have 4 million pre-orders for that chain. So in your case it's about 1/10th of that. So lets say they have 400,000 pre-orders. Still damn impressive but not insanely impressive.
Yep, doesn't add up... it is a really small out of the way Gamestop, but even if others had
double that many they'd still be way short.

Not sure what to make of the story... perhaps just a mis-quote of some sort that should
have said 4 million overall... i.e., all vendors... and then mentioned specifically how many
Gamestop had themselves.

Usually you get something for putting the 5 bucks down. A demo/T-shirt/poster/strat guide, etc...

I think its funny that PS3 fanboys say that Halo doesn't matter and that games like MGS4 will kill it in sales, when H3 has more preorders than their are PS3 owners.
