Triad OnWall Mini LCR 3.0

This particular model is the probably the best of the 3 in 1 enclosure type of speaker. BTW, this is really 3 separate enclosures in one. Each area is sealed and doesn't leak sound to the other area. This is not true of all manufacturers of these type of speakers. So in this particular case the enclosure is not an issue.

For music you might be making some trade offs using this type of speaker. There is nothing wrong with the Triad's sound. It sounds great! But depending on the size of your display the speakers might be a little close together to get good stereo imaging and separation. For example on a 42" display the LR tweeters are only a little more than 3' apart. The larger the display the less this is an issue if you get the custom sizing available through Triad which I'd highly recommend.

On the other hand having your LR speakers 5 feet from to each side of your display will not give realistic presentation for movies or TV, as sound from the left and right won't give you the perception that it is coming from the picture.

If you are an audiophile and want the best music performance you will not be happy with this type of speaker, no matter which brand. For decent sound as you say you will be more than satisfied.

I have heard these on a couple of occasions and they really surprised me. They were being fed with a Denon 2807 and another was with a B&K 505. They really took me back. The sound was fantastic.

I concur with everything that BobL has stated. This type of speaker is not for everybody, but out of all the others this one continues on Triads premise of a very sound and sealed enclosure. This thing is well built and sounds great. It gave a very dynamic showing on both movies and music. Once again this thing really impressed me.

It's not that the speaker is not for "everybody"... it was designed and for a specific application that requires that all three are side by side.

If it suits your application, consider it (I agree that it is at the Triad is at the top of the food chain for the application).

If your application allows more traditional placement of Left, Center, and Right speakers, look elsewhere.

Thanks for the accurate and kind words, folks. The OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 is, in fact, three of our Mini LCRs within a single box that houses three separate enclosures. Unlike most product offerings in this category, it is not an architectural exercise; it's actually a really good speaker that happens to fit, as Rick stated, this specific application. The 3.0 can also be ordered in any custom width in 1/4" increments up to 66" wide, and in any color. I suggest you order it to match the wall; not the TV; so it disappears, but that is your choice.

The Mini 3.0 works well without a sub, but with a subwoofer, it's killer. We are also a month or so away from releasing an OnWall Mini LCR model which is a single speaker version, which allows for more optimum placement. There's an InCeiling Mini LCR, an InRoom, and an InWall, too, to address any and all installation applications.

Here's a shot we took on the floor of my office to show the driver configuration. Notice the left and right tweeters offset to the sides to provide more separation.

how does the speaker mount to the wall?

There's a heavy duty bracket included with the speaker. (I'll look for a drawing or photo.) In addition to the $1,500 OnWall Mini LCR 3.0, we're about to introduce a $3,000 OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 SE version, with expensive Seas drivers and a better industrial design.

Paul. I have seen a few on Ebay recently. Is there a way to tell if they are legit?

No Triad sales online are legit, LEAST of all eBay. Bottom-feeders copy and paste our pictures and my text into their websites, and claim to be Triad dealers. When they get an order, they go fishing for the product from an unscrupulous authorized dealer. The product can be used, B-stock, a return, or in some cases, new. It takes forever because the eBay account has to find the product (which he does not stock) and have it shipped to him after it ships to the dealer. The speaker is shipped at least three times, risking shipping damage. If you have shipping damage, warranty issues, or any other issue, you have no warranty. (Triad warranty is 10 years.)

Go to a real dealer where you are assured the product will be built to order for you, and in any custom paint color you want.

I was speaking of a USED LCR 3.0. Any way to verify it was an originally made by you?

We're a few weeks away from launching a new $3,000 OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 SE. Same custom sizing and paint options, better industrial design and a nicer grill, and premium Seas drivers. Onward and upward...

got it yesterday and put it under the Plasma this afternoon. Still running it through its paces but initial impressions are WOW. What a nice piece of equipment. Very dynamic.
Will write more as I get a feel for the mini.

I just found out we'll be releasing the new $3,000 OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 SE before Christmas. It uses godawful expensive Seas drivers, premium crossovers, and it has a new industrial design with a beautiful grill. Custom paint is free. Custom sizing will be available by January, so the speaker can be sized to fit any flat-panel display, in 1/4" increments. When we do the custom widths, we move the left and right speakers out to the edges as far as they can go, rather than just tack empty space on to make the speaker wider. It'll work without a sub in most instances, but it's a serious home theater package with a sub or two.

Specs and parts aside, what are audible differences between the 3.0 and 3.0 SE?

Because the drivers are so good, the speaker has more definition from top to bottom. Everything appears to be in tighter focus, and you can hear deeper into the recordings. Bass is a bit leaner and tighter, but just as extended. It was our assumption that this more expensive model would usually be used with a sub, but it works great without one. A little EQ (maybe 3 dB) added at 45 Hz makes it sound huge. Dynamics are better, midrange is uncolored, and highs are natural with sparkle. I heard the 3.0 SE in an A/B with the 3.0 in November, and for twice the money, it isn't twice as good, but it's 30% better, which is huge.

Go for the better one. If you are at least somewhat of a discriminating listener, it's a big difference, and you'll probably use the speaker for fifteen years...or more. I get the feeling you can tell the difference.

Thanks for the great info here.

My local dealer (Definitive Audio in Seattle) recommended the Mini LCR3.0 for a very unique application in my condo. Our TV is mounted on a pole that runs from floor to ceiling about 5' off the wall. All of the walls are glass, so there is no space for in-walls, and the WAF (as well as a roaming toddler) precludes floor-standing models.

My plan is to mount the LCR3.0 directly under the LCD on the pole. The TV is mounted such that it can rotate around the pole to address different sections of the room, and it can also slide up and down to transition from all-family movie watching to on-floor Saturday morning video gaming. Using the LCR3.0 allows the sound stage to move with the TV, which is an awesome bonus.

So, any concerns with pole mounting the LCR3.0? We may need to create a custom bracket, but I wanted to bounce this off of you before I jumped in.

What mount are you going to use for the tv? Many of the better mount companies such as Chief make pole mounts for tv's and have under mount speaker adapters for the mounts.

I like ifor's answer. The only small negative is less acoustical coupling because the speaker will be in space, and the bass will be a bit thinner. If you use EQ or have a sub, you'll be okay.

I mentioned this in the Triad thread, but we now offer high gloss black on the OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 and OnWall Mini LCR 3.0 SE, at anywhere from around $400 to maybe $1,000 extra, depending upon the speaker size. It's a hand-rubbed gloss, done to order in America. Not cheap, but beautiful.
