I just received my 5265f from the big river and the white glove service was excellent - unpacked it for me, placed it on the stand, waited for me to test and even helped me carry my old 36" CRT to the garage, which was a big help. i give amzn + eagle 2 thumbs up thus far!

here's my firmware (ordered on 05/25; delivered today)

T-TULPAUSO-1024 April 6th
T-TULPAUS5-1008 CS[0A46] 52inch

For those knowledgeable on the firmware history, how does my firmware compare to what is available? Is this the most recent firmware?

Still on the fence here. Waiting to see if the next Amazon shipment is good to go. Thanks for the impressions. Do you have any pics of your 61 mounted?

I have to throw in my two cents. Based on the recommendation of others, I purchased the Panamax 5100, mainly to improve the picture quality of my SD channels. It didn't work. After I ran the cable to it and then into my SA 8300 box, I lost about 8 channels (blank, black screen) including Disc HD. SD channels didn't look any better. I disconnected the cable from it and back directly to the cable box and the channels were back. The TW cable guy was just here, checked my cable signal and said it was exactly where it should be and that boosting it with an amplifier would only cause other problems, and that connecting "anything" other than their equipment between the cable and their box (i.e. the Pana 5100) would result in losing some of the "middle" channels. I tried to tell him that other people on this forum, with the same equipment and cable service as me have had great results. It fell on deaf ears. I sent Panamax tech support an e-mail yesterday, but so far no response. So, I pretty much feel like I wasted $350. My two cents. Anyone with advice or experience with this, please chime in.

now off to the calibration thread to tweak the settings. I'll post pictures later today or definitely this weekend, which will be helpful for those concerned with glare because I have tons of windows/natural light.

so far, glare is not a problem at all and it is sunny and bright inside my house right now.

Did you notice noise in your screen prior to buying it? Also, there have been reports that time warner cable has issues with all of these bidirectional ports on these conditioners. Its not just the panamax. I totally forgot about this fact as I do not have TW Cable. The sales guy at Magnolia did mention it though.

As far as not seeing a difference, I guess it would depend. I see a lot of interference on my screen. Especially when using my pc. I am more interested in the 11 ports with 3 separated banks than anything else....did you ever happen to experience the vacuum cleaner effect? Vacuuming while watching tv and seeing the lines go scrolling through the screen? Thats what power conditioning will cure. Any power related interference.

Waisted 350 dollars? Cant you just return it? And if you bought it online, why did you pay so much? Just wondering.

My only complaint with Amazon is their 30-day return policy is very limiting considering other places do up to 90 days.

I am on day 65 or so of my purchase and am in hell right now dealing with Samsung. I don't want to go to into details until I resolve things with them, but their support and recently revised warranty policy are really trying my patience.

My advice regarding Amazon is to make absolutely sure nothing is wrong with the set before your 30-days are up. Other than that they have great prices and excellent service.

$350 is way too much for the 5100. It should around $200.

Great forum guys, thanks for all the info.
I bought the 4665f Tues from Best Buy and just wanted to let you know I got the 1005 firmware version.
Also does anyone have any luck connecting their Mac (currently I'm using a power pc mac mini via dvi to Hdmi cable connected to HDMI 1) . I've connected with no problems via the D-sub PC input but want to try and get an image via HDMI.
I have SwitchRes on my mac for switching between resolutions easily and have no luck producing an image Via HDMI for any of the recommended resolutions (1920 x 1080, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024).
All I get is the unsupported mode screen.

Cheers!

My TV is working perfectly, the blacks look good. One odd thing was that immediately after the board was replaced all video looked like rainbows. The image was very distored then the tech called samsung and with a few button clicks they set the panel mode to some number and it corrected everything. The new board must have had a testing code still assigned and once changed it was working great. I just finished playing MLB the show on the ps3 and got no drop outs or flashes. I have to reapply my configuration settings but for now just using as is and it looks nice.

Norse, thanks for the quick response. Sure wish I had known about TW "issues" with bidirectional ports, before I purchased this. I did notice quite a bit of graininess on my SD channels, which is what I was hoping to improve. No power related interference now, so that coupled with the surge protection may make it worthwhile. I bought it from Vann's, because they are an "authorized" internet retailer, and I didn't want any issues with their "connected equipment protection warranty" which isn't valid if you purchase from the internet sites with the "cheaper" prices.
Well I just got my 4665F from Amazon last week and have the older board and FW. Sure enough, I had my first HDMI cut-off watching TW Cable HD through a Motorola DVR last night. I also have gotten an occasional green/ pink flash. The Oppo DV981 has worked well so far. I live in an apartment in the L.A. area so I'm wondering if power fluctuations are affecting the TV's ability to hold a signal. I just picked up an APC H10 power conditioner that, along with surge protection and noise filtering, also regulates voltage (something I found most "power conditioners" don't do at all). I'll report back if any problems repeat after hooking this up tonight.

I have paypal, but not ready to part with it yet. I'm still waiting to hear from Panamax tech people to see if they have any suggestions. I did try hooking up a cheap signal amplifier to the cable just before going to the 5100. This partially gave me the "lost" programs back, i.e. in and out and horrible, but not just a blank black screen. When I suggested to the TW guy that maybe a good whole system amplifier would solve the problem, he said my signal strength was just where it should be and amplifying it would cause other problems. Funny thing is, before the 5100 I had a cheap Philips surge suppressor. When I ran the cable through that, I didn't lose any channels, but I thought the picture quality was definitely no better and probably a little grainier. However, the Philips unit is not bi-directional and according to Norse that is the problem with the 5100 and TW

The only outlets which I am aware of offering a 90 days return policy are the likes of Costco, Sams Club and possibly Sears, but the club type warehouses do not carry these models. I have not heard of any box store offering more than 30 days on HDTVs and the fact that Amazon does even offer a 30 days return policy for online purchases, is pretty amazing to me. Most online sellers like New Egg, One Call and so on, have the bulk item return policy (basically, no returns on bulk sized items).

I would be really interested to know as to what these revised warranty policies are and as to how they may effect our warranty/service calls and rights. TIA.

In other news, I have no audio over HDMI. I'm using a Belkin 12 ft Ferrite Core Cable connected over HDMI 1 to a Brighthouse HD Box. I've tested HDMI 1/2/3 and no luck. Works fine over Component.

If anybody has any suggestions or wants to share pain, by all means lemme know

My CoA is this:
1) Disconnect all inputs, leaving just the HDMI.
2) Test across HDMI 1/2/3.
3) Kick and scream until Samsung comes to my house with the newest board/firmware

I'll try to get to this tonight -- unfortunately this will interrupt my girlfriend's Whose Wedding Is It Anyway Marathon -- figures the day I get a new toy she won't even let me play with it :P

I'll post all convos with Samsung. Hopefully I won't get connected to Joe Douche like some of you guys on the boards. :X

Besides HDMI, my first impressions of the TV -- WOW. I was viewing Planet Earth and was blown away. I tried the first batch of settings in the Calibration thread and found them to be too dark/dull. If anyone here could point me to some brighter settings, that'd be awesome -- otherwise I'll go bug the people in the Cal thread for more info.

Thanks to everyone here -- you guys are a wealth of knowledge.

Axis

I have heard Ferrite cables have been the culprit for some on here.

It has something to do with the cable box not being able to talk back to base for any paid programing and such. You probably cant order pay per view movies through TW cable with the cable running through the conditioner either.

I can see you reasons for the warranty concerns. They are strict on that. I figure I am just buying the conditioning and the 3 yr replacement of the panamax warranty is all I want so thats why I will buy from unauthorized place for less.

oh, anyone looking to buy a 60 gig ps3? I have one in mint condition to sell. All original packaging, additional dvd remote as well. Receipt included for sony warranty verification. I will put on ebay if no takers, or local craigs list.

Hmmmm?. This kind of makes me wonder:

I think that the HDMI cable which came with my Oppo 981 was the ferrite type (I certainly did not buy a cable like this, so it must be the one!).

In any case, this is the only anomaly which I experience with the Oppo (in HDMI 2. HDMI 1 connected to D* HR20 has been working like a charm):

When trying to change and set the Oppo output to say: 480P, 720P, 1080i or 1080P; I get a brief (a couple of seconds in duration) flash on the screen where the whole screen goes snowy with a dash of pinkish/greenish accent, before the blue Oppo screen appears. However, I have watched really long arse movies with this Oppo, such as: Gangs of NY, The Departed, Gladiator and no issues with drop outs during these movies. Let us not forget that I have the medium-old arrangement of 1016/1004 on my 4665.

As I now, I am being just too lazy to switch that ferrite cable to a none-ferrite to see if that resolves the anomaly as described above.

It did that stuff on my old panny as well.

Question for you new(past weeks) Oppo owners.....with the price of the hd dvd players from toshiba at 299 now, why not get it instead? Its not much more, has great upscaling, and hd dvd too. I owned an Oppo but sold it once hd dvd came out.

anything reasonable I guess...I purchased at compusa 2-17-2007 so the 1 yr warranty still has 8+ months to go. If anyone is interested, please send private msgs as we dont need to bore everyone here.

I also have a perfectly running 360 premium that has till november 2007 on its extended best buy warranty(papers included) I am willing to part with as my new elite has taken its place. I dont have the box as I tossed it when I moved 6 months ago...but nephew might send me his. heh

private messages only guys/gals. thx.

I bought my Oppo back in Feb/March and when I checked around, the HD-DVD players were more expensive than the $299 on the Toshiba (A1 or the A2?, must be the former).

In any case, I have read that the Oppo 981 has a much better upscaling chip and that it is also region free with a whole host of features that the Toshiba does not have. I personally do not own one single HD-DVD and my gut reaction would be to go BD instead of HD-DVD, simply because BD is better. However, I do remember when Sony lost the Betamax vs VHS war and that is what concerns me (Betamax was a better technology than VHS). Currently the new Samsung BD player (1200) with upscaling capabilities has dropped to about $650-$700 (I have seen it as low as $600, but from wishy washy online retailers).

I can wait, but yes, Oppo is expensive for an upconvertor. My guess is that they will be introducing a HD-DVD upconvertor in a year ot so. Great Co for this niche market.

I received my set today and as promised, I will post my board & firmware information: 1008 & 1024. Again, this was purchased directly from Amazon and shipped from the Reno warehouse...so those of you looking to buy on the west coast...the Reno warehouse apparently has the new goods...at least for the 5265. I've only been watching for 20 minutes and have not noticed any defects yet. The picture is BEAUTIFUL. The colors are vivid and the black levels are BLACK.

I was worried that this would be too big for my room, but it's perfect. I sit about 12 feet back. I will update you guys about the drop outs or if I notice a defect...but so far, so good.

Samsung currently has the best LCD panels and is one step ahead of its rivals (in terms on LCD technology).
