Sword of the Stranger is a must-have for me and I do own it. Paprika I also enjoyed a lot.

I missed this so thanks for posting this up!

I'm planning to buy Patlabor one and two on bluray so when I get around to ordering it up, I'll post up what I think of it here!

Even ignoring the fact that it's upscaled SD, Witchblade is a terrible, terrible series. I watched it when it was only available as fansubs and I thought I should have been paid by the studio that animated it for my wasted time.

Witchblade is a piece of s*** anime version. Read the original ongoing comic book series from Topcow instead.

Lots of Code Geass fans here....

We need this series on blu-ray stat.

Anyone owns or has seen CLAMP's "Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE"? Season 1 is on Blu-ray for what seems like a good price (Amazon's in particular) and I'm a fan of their "Cardcaptor Sakura" anime (going through the last few episodes of Season 3 right now). Is it worth getting on Blu or should the DVD be enough for someone that is more concerned with the quality of the story/animation than whether it's in high-def or not? Not an HD whore, but HD anime is only worth it for me if the movie/TV series is of my liking (leaning toward the "Sailor Moon"/"Appleseed" side of anime but also willing to 'experiment' if the movie/show is right).

Get the blu-ray since it is cheaper than the DVD, the picture quality is ok but never impressed me.

The entirety of Season 1 and the first half of Season 2 have been released on Blu-ray in Japan. The quality is quite good, as this was a big-budget series. Fansubbed versions are available at the usual places if you don't want to wait God knows how long for an official North American Blu-ray release.

I'm thinking of picking up Full Metal Panic! "The second raid" and I wanted to know if anyone has seen the series? (and the BR)...

I haven't seen the BR but I have the series on dvd and thought it was fantastic. A lot of reviewers like it better then the first season. I say if you liked the first season grab it. I included a review I found for the BR.

FMP: TSR itself is a good anime but the BD quality is some of the worst out there. Upscaled from SD, DNR'd, and the opening animation was forcibly converted from 30fps to 1080p24 which makes it look all choppy.

It's better than the DVDs, but that's not much of an excuse.
I liked Witchblade. But hell, I thought The Spirit was an okay movie, so what do I know?

Everything that jd213 said about Full Metal Panic: TSR applies to Tsubasa. Sadly, the DNR issue applies to all FUNi upscales released so far.

Well I just bought Sky Blue from Amazon.uk, very much looking forward to that one.

Just ordered Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Season 1 from amazon. Too good a deal, and I'd be lying if I said seeing "Ghost in the Shell 2.0" in high-def wasn't a tipping point.

Yea I bought this off Amazon a little while back but I haven't watched it yet. I am waiting until I get finished with my system so I can enjoy it to the fullest.

My favorite Anime title thus far is actually a DVD... 5 Centimers per Second - the audio is amazing and visually its very detailed. I would love to get a Blu-Ray NA release of it, but it's impossible to find (and I had enough trouble finding a used DVD for a really good bargin price of $70.)

I had never seen the Evangelion series before (but I have and really like Rahxephon) but just recently picked up the newly released first segment of the reworked to movie Evangelion: 1.01 on DVD... it's pretty good story wise and the visuals and audio are excellent. The Blu-Ray version (Evangelion 1.11) will be out March 9th and its supposed to be a HD digital master copy. Can't wait to have the 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 movies.

Evangelion 1.01 trailer

A title I have pre-ordered on Blu-Ray is the Heroic Age complete series, since it will be way cheaper than getting the DVD sets. That one comes out February 16th.

Any one excited about the upcoming Gundam Unicorn release on 3/12?
By all accounts this is a fantastic OVA based on the original UC timeline. I just wish Bandai would be more consumer friendly....sigh...

A title I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned yet in this thread is the Freedom OVA. I recently purchased a used Blu-Ray set off Amazon and it is now one of my favorite anime titles of all times. The video and audio quality is excellent.

Can anybody recommend some good Mech Anime. Along the lines of Robotech/Patlabor etc..... I am reasonable new to the genre again. Took a very long break. Don't like gundom.

Thanks
You could try Macross Frontier and Macross Zero, which will likely never be released in North America due to the hassle between the original Japanese production companies. (Who knew that it wasn't Carl Macek's fault?) "Fansubbed versions are available at the usual places."

Thinking man's mecha titles:

Flag (a documentary style presentation in anime)

Gasaraki

Rahxephon

Over the Top/Visually impressive Gundam mocking extravaganzas that are quite an experience:

Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann

Diebuster (Gunbuster 2)

And while not really mecha in the true sense, if you haven't seen Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series you should.

That my friend, is a very long and convoluted list. If you mean stuff available on Blu Ray, I can't help you. I'm trying to find that information out myself (why I'm in this thread) but if you mean in general, there's a ton of stuff available.

If you are a Macross/Robotech fan you must immediately search out a copy of Macross Plus on DVD. After that, go to the web and try to find Macross Zero and Macross Frontier. Fansubs can be found in the usual places. All three of those series are phenomenal especially if you are a fan of Macross to begin with. Frontier is currently my favorite Macross series and one of my top anime of all time and trust me when I say I've seen an ass-ton of anime.

And what is it you don't like about Gundam? Is it Gundam Wing you don't like, because there's SOOOOOO much more to Gundam than that. I recommend Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (excellent!), Char's Counterattack, Zeta Gundam and Gundam 0079: 8th MS Team.

I also recommend Full Metal Panic. Good mecha action in that series.

Do you happen to like Superhero mecha as well? In that category I recommend Dangaio (avoid the dubbed version though...its terrible) Hades Project Zeorymer, Gunbuster and its sequel Diebuster, Gravion and its continuation Gravion Zwei, Neon Genesis Evangelion (though I'm sure you've probably seen this already) and thats just the short list.

Any new news from Honneamise? Their site hasn't been updated since Akira.

So Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part 1 is up for pre-order on Amazon for $41. It appears to be 13 episodes (325 minutes). Did this series run for only 26 episodes or does it go on for multiple seasons?

I liked the first animated take on this manga well enough but I've avoided watching Brotherhood with the intention of not seeing it until I could watch it all at once.

Edit: Nevermind. A bit of research turns out that Brotherhood will have 52 episodes, just as the original series did. $82 a season is normally a price I would balk at, even on Blu-ray... but I still hold anime to different pricing standards, even if I really shouldn't at this point.

I supposed I could wait a year or two to get them as full seasons at a lower price but I don't think I'm quite that patient.

At one point a couple of weeks ago Amazon had this for $30.99... so it probably will drop again at some point.

I'm not sure about that. I know they have already aired something like 45 or so episodes last year and this year already... but this series is meant to follow the Manga more closely and new issues of the Manga are still being written and published... so I don't see how they could have a finite number of episodes planned just yet.

...And now I can't pull the trigger at the current price. I really hate Amazon's yo-yo price ******** sometimes. Ah well, I'll be happier in the end if I can convince myself to wait so I can watch more of it at once. I'm still happy that I didn't like the first FMA series when I saw bits of it on Adult Swim because when I cracked and bought the show I was able to watch it all nonstop.

In a similar vein, I have season five of Lost and haven't started watching it yet. And I won't until a few weeks before the sixth and final season releases.
I hated the way the original FMA ended, hopefully the new anime changes the ending, the fact that it is coming to blu-ray also makes me glad that I didn't buy the official release of the original run. I used to be a major hong kong anime bootleg buyer, but I have gotten past that and now buy only the official releases (I could have gotten Code Geass complete for $40 HK release, but I bought the official release for $210, yep that was fun, good thing the PQ is vastly superior on most official releases)
