Master Anime on Blu Ray Thread - Page 11

I don't "get" Gundam or any of its incarnations and spin-offs. Just saying.
Anything mecha seems to be an instant hit for some reason, especially in Japan. I find rather amusing that unicorn suit tbh, hard to take an enemy seriously when he drives smth like that.
This gundam unicorn benefits at last of a good quality master, referring to the banding, and a good encode too. It doesn't however benefit of much resolution, quality varies but it's at max 720. I suppose that isn't a surprise though.

This thread hasn't been used in a while, and since August and Sept are going to be extremely busy for anime on Blu I thought I'd open things up again.

In the next few months we have:

Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic: FUMOFFU
Eden of the East
Black Blood Brothers
Casshern Sins Pt1/Pt2
Slayers Revolution S4
Slayers Evolution-R S5
Sengoku Basara
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Pt2

From Sentai:

Legends of the Dark Kings: Fist of the Northstar
X'amd Pt1 (lossless dual-language tracks)
Ghost Hound Complete (also dual lossless language tracks)

Have I missed anything? A busy few months ahead indeed. I already have at least 4 titles on pre-order and will probably pick up many more, I'm just waiting mainly to see if Funi's stuff is true HD with lossless audio. Sentai will definitely have true HD sourced material with lossless (at least for the 2 I mentioned)- I can't wait!

Crap, I forgot about this thread.

Amazon is having a massive sale on anime on blu-ray, so you guys might want to check it out.

DBZ Kai on blu-ray's PQ is barely better than the DVDs (a little more detail, but nothing special, the intro is much better though since it was made with HD in mind and is entirely new)

FMA Brotherhood looks amazing on blu-ray, I don't think it was made in 1080p but it is still one of the better anime sets for showing off blu-ray. If only they hadn't rushed through the begining of the original anime for this remake, it kills some of the emotional impact of some of the stuff which I won't spoil.

fumofu on on bluray!! O_O
This link to Blu-ray.com usually has everything listed that is coming out soon or is already out on blu-ray.
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?genre=Anime

Plus it will link you to amazon so you can buy it or it lists the price. Sometimes they have reviews on the movies which can be helpful.

According to this article:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/46009

FUNimation has acquired the rights to Evangelion 2.0. The Blu-ray is supposed to be released sometime next year. It's already out in Japan, so I don't know what the hold up is.
Also Aniplex will be releasing Read or Die OVA/TV sometime later this year. My favorite series too.
ROD!!! Can't wait to watch my favourite papermasters in HD. Ended up buying all three soundtracks on CD (one for the OVA, two for the TV series).

Urgh. Not until 2011.

At least Summer Wars will finally be released domestically on BD. But also not until 2011. Bleah.

Well, if sex is your #1 concern, that's a whole genre... You'd have to import to get any of that on BD though.

Thanks for your reply.
I should have said: "Sexy Characters".
Don't need too see Anime characters doing it.

EDitEDbyED:
... or want too!!!
Saw the review for: "Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone".
That's what got me thinking "Anime".

reEDitEDbyED:
Maybe I've got too change my #1 too transfer/PQ; cause I didn't know BD Anime had so many issues.
(old transfers, windowboxing, upscaling, banding, etc...)

Not necessarily. Queen's Blade is coming out in a few months. That's pretty perverted stuff right there.

6. Gunslinger Girl 2
7. Paprika
8. Ghost in the shell 2.0

3. What's 'special' bout the 1st release?
4. Any diff from the 'other' HD disc release?
10. Super expensive, right?
3 - The first press version of Akira came in a nice slipcase and had a 12 page (I think?) booklet detailing the extensive audio restoration the film went under. The case and disc are identical otherwise.

4 - Freedom has a 7th episode on Blu-ray.

10 - Yeah, Honneamise is f***ing expensive. I got mine for about half-off and I STILL had to fight back the urge not to get it... but it's such a great film, I'm glad I finally nabbed it.

I have RIN: DAUGHTERS OF MNEMOSYNE and watched a good half hour's worth of the first two episodes. Very nice SD upscale, quite sharp and no DVNR/EE like their early releases... unfortunately there's some deinterlacing artifacts that create frame-blending. (The FUNi DVD probably has the exact same problem, though.) It's not the worst problem to have and the release is probably FUNi's strongest "SD Remaster" yet, but it is pretty annoying if you can spot it.

My anime US release wish list:

1. Code Geass

2. Ninja Scroll

3. Black Lagoon

4. Moribito - highly underrated series, one of the most beautiful animation I have ever seen.

5. Mai-Hime and all its spin-offs series and OVAs.
The Freedom blu ray box set sells for $100- $125 and has 5.1 True HD audio. I think the HD-DUD only had PCM 2.0 and each volume was sold separately for $30. The Akira 1st pressing has the slipcase box and a 32 page booklet with interviews and artwork. I got Royal Space Force for half off as well, it wasn't too expensive.

Canaan is coming to Blu-Ray in October (26th...), hopefully the price drops though because right now it's a little too high for a 13 episode series. Not that Canaan isn't a great series...

I should be getting in a rare Blu-Ray find tomorrow... the North American release of Yukikaze. Found it brand new on Amazon Canada (sold directly by Amazon Canada too, not a third party) and it's a title that has been OOP/OOS for a little while now. Cost me a little more than Jin-Roh...but I don't care! Been looking for either a new or used copy on and off for nearly 2 years.

Title's I'm waiting for on Blu-Ray:
Summer Wars (If the Japanese release only had english subtitles...)
Evangelion 2.22
Appleseed (waiting for the price to drop...if it had HD audio it would have been an immediate purchase...)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (UK Release end of March 2011, unless there is a US release before...)
5 Centimeters Per Second...Why no English Subtitle release yet for this one?
Ergo Proxy (if it ever goes Blu...)

My anime Blu's:
Appleseed: Ex Machina
Astroboy (2009 Movie)
Evangelion 1.11
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Freedom (OVA) (UK/US Release)
Gunbuster Vs. Diebuster: Aim for the Top!The Gattai!! (UK/US Release)
Halo Legends
Heroic Age (cheaper than DVD version...)
Jin-Roh (Japanese release w English audio and subtitles, exact same as US release but no 500 page story book.)
Sky Blue (UK/US release, a.k.a Wonderful Days, Korean title)
The Sky Crawlers
Sword of the Stranger
Vexille
Yukikaze

I was tempted to get this initially but found out it was a 480p upconvert to 1080i, not real hi-def.

IIRC all the movies are HD. Amazon.fr has had the first three on BD for a while. No idea what the deal is with them though.

The series has been widescreen for a while, it only really went HD a month or two ago. Wouldn't be surprised if they started on BDs eventually. If they do the series it'll inevitably be 1080i due to VFR silliness.

For others looking for this, if you search the UPC on Google it comes up with some other sites' order pages claiming to be able to get stock, for cheaper than Amazon.ca.

Not really a fan of the movies. I hope the series will get full treatment. Though I wont be buying the fillers. lol

Yes, it would have been nice if it was done as a proper 1080P encode, but it still does not look too bad in upscaled 1080i. The HD audio was worth it though. Excellent use of surround; I haven't heard better surround layout and usage in an anime.

It's hard to get good screen shots with interlaced video, but here are a couple paused screens:

Any word on Full Metal Panic? Some guy wrote a review on Amazon & claimed it was only upconverted 480p. I dunno if he really knew what he was talking about.

Wouldn't surprise me, especially for a title that old. The vast majority of anime on Blu-ray is upconverted 480i material.

IIR the JP discs correctly, it is upconverted, but without all the terrible dot crawl/rainbowing etc that plagued the DVDs.

At what point did the series go widescreen? I haven't watched it online, but the current TV broadcasts and available DVDs are all 4:3.
