Official Toshiba 65HM167 and 57HM167 Owner's thread - Page 64

I don't know about my cinema mode settings (I'm at work), but I do know that my stretch settings stay the same based on the input (natural or no stretch for my HDMI from AVR - DirecTV HR20, and full for my component from AVR - DVD, XBox).

wish...sorry I got tied up last night and never checked on this. I'll check it out over the weekend and let you know.

I have been an avid reader of this thread since early December when i finally decided to buy this DLP from CC for 1499....I absolutley love it!..I have since bought the HD-A30 player..My question is, what are the best settings that everyone has had the best results with this player, and why is it that while playing the movie Transformers, and others as well, i still have black bars on top and bottom of my screen with the tv settings set to natural?

On another note, i would love to tell you about the stand i got for this set at Big Lots! I found the Techcraft #THC PTV583B on display for 48.98.Seeing but not believing, i just had to ask if they would knock some off the price since it was assembled, i got it for $40!

jlec - welcome to the forum.

The black bars you are seeing are normal. Movies like that are shot at a wider screen ratio than the 16:9 (I'm not familiar enough with the numbers to tell you the ratio...I'm sure you can find it on the web if you care) that the TV displays. Therefore, you have the black screen above and below the movie. No worries.

I have the same combo as you and I set the A30 to 1080p. You can set it up to 1080p/24 but I noticed no difference with it set like that. I think it's got something to do with the TV not properly displaying a 1080p/24 signal. Like the above poster said, the black bars are normal for movies filmed with a 2:35.1 aspect ratio. Congrats on your purchase!!

I could honestly just deal with this and when I get the PS3 I could move my DVR over to component. I'd be hard pressed to find a difference between HDMI and component. Question is, should I just deal with it or get it fixed if possible?

I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this. I have somewhat of a similar issue. Quite frequently, when I switch inputs to either my HD-DVD or Blu-ray player and then later come back to the Input (HDMI 1) with my Fios box, I get the no video signal banner. The only thing that will get the signal back is to physically pull the power cable from the Fios box and plug it back in. Sometimes I actually have to cut power to both the box and the TV itself. I originally thought this was the Fios box, but I have now gone through two boxes and still have the problem. Anyone else experienced this with one of their HDMI inputs?

Hi All,
I searched this forum and haven't seemed to find the right combo of keywords to get an answer I suppose. I also posted this a while back and got no responses. So I figure with a lot of folks taking advantage of the deals and grabbing this TV that maybe I would try one last time in the hopes that someone else has come across this and found a solution.

I currently have a S300 Blu and A2 HD box running direct into two of my HDMI slots on my Toshiba 65. For normal TV viewing from my Fios box (in the third HDMI slot) a volume setting of 24-30 is perfect. However when I switch to the Blu or HD player, I have to crank the sound to anywhere from 60-75 for it to be audible and dialogue to be clear. Any one else have this problem? Obviously this is problematic as I have a very bad memory and inevitably switch inputs when the movie is done and almost get blasted out of the living room when the cable kicks in at twice the sound. I have tried every possible combination of settings imaginable in each player to remedy this, but with zero luck. So since it happens to both I am starting to think maybe it is an audio setting on the TV that is supressing the sound. Anyone else encounter this and find a solution?

Are the HD DVD/BD players set for stereo pcm output? So it should convert the 5.1 down to 2.0 output?
I have an A2 connected to a Samsung and the volume level is similar to my Series 3 TiVo. On my Toshiba I run my A35 through my receiver for audio so I never use the Toshiba TV speakers.

Hi Aaron. A fellow east coaster up late I see. I am in the Mont Co area of Md. Right up the road from you. Yup, I have tried all the combos I can think of. Currently I have both players (S300 and A2) set at stereo and PCM for the HDMI output as well as for DTS and DD. I have also tried it the other way around. Very puzzling. Wondering now if maybe some of the advanced audio settings on the TV could be doing something to the sound coming from the players. I have tried some combos there as well, but maybe I just haven't hit the right one. I guess I will give that a whirl in the morning.

It's now listed as $1399 on CC's website. Maybe go back and get another $100 off.

Just ordered one of these from Circuit City. Will be picking it up sometime this week. Replacing a Toshiba RP CRT.

Can anyone tell me, will an SUV be big enough to pick it up, or do I need to find someone with a pickup?

I used a pickup. I still have my box and just measured it at 27"x43"x63". Its rather large, but not heavy really at all. Just akward.

Dang, just a few inches to big for SUV. Oh well, time to hit up the pickup drivers at work tomorrow.

Thanks for checking, I appreciate it.

Ready to make purchase for this set but I have one question. I have seen a couple posts where people are indicating that the top black bar isn't totally horizontal on 2:35:1 films, but curves up a bit on one side. Is everyone having this issue or is it just bad luck to get one of these sets. I ask because I'm way too neurotic to look at a curved black bar on a film for 2 hours...especially when my current 62hm165 is pretty much razor sharp.

thanks,
chris

Okay, I'm also considering buying this set right now. Circuit City has it for $1,399.99 and Sears would price match that down to ~$1,320 based on the price difference. I have a few questions after seeing it in the store yesterday with OTA HD (basketball game) and BD (Pirates 3).

First question is around viewing angle. My current Toshiba 65" RP-CRT has a wide viewing angle which works well in my living room where some folks could be sitting off to the side (though my wife and are typically viewing the screen dead on). I noticed that this screen loses fidelity pretty quickly when you move off center laterally. Does anyone know what the real world effective viewing angle for the screen is?

Second question is around extended warranty. I assume I should just get it? I've never had a lamp-based screen before, but I know they burn out pretty regularly and aren't exactly cheap to replace. My understanding is that the extended warranties cost just a little more than one or two lamp replacements and pay for themselves pretty quickly. Suggestions?

I currently have my center channel sitting on top of my RP-CRT. It's a Definitive Technologies bi-polar speaker with a sub integrated into it as well (as do my two front tower speakers). That works fine because of the boxiness of that screen's casing, but obviously the DLP doesn't have that. I know that some DLPs can be outfitted with a mounting shelf for a center channel, but I couldn't see anything on this screen that led me to believe I could do that. I'd prefer not to put my center under the screen in the stand, and I'd also prefer not to have to build and mount my own shelf in the wall behind the screen. Any suggestions on this one?

Thanks!

This is a fluke that only a handfull of owners have experienced. I have owned this TV since May 2007 with no problems (knock on wood). Great TV at a great price. Buy with confidence!

The Circuit City price policy is 30 days at 110% of the difference and 60 days at 100% of the difference. This is on HD sets only. I just got back from there and they refunded me $100. Very nice.

Mine's fine. It's a geometry issue that is hit and miss.

No curves for me. I have had the set for coming up on a year now and highly recommend it!

Good afternoon gentlemen,

Looks like this will be the fourth (and hopefully final) thread I've subscribed to.

Was subscribed to the Sony XBR5 and Sony A3000 threads. Was planning on getting the new 70" Sony, but when that was canceled back in November, I also subscribed to the 73833 thread. I liked the Sony A3000, but 60" is a bit too small for my needs.

Finally decided 2 weeks ago to get the 73833 and bought it from BB with a delivery scheduled for Feb. 7th.

Well, when I saw yesterday that CC had the Toshiba 65" on clearance for $1399, I had to look into it. Spent last night reading most of this thread and decided I could do without some of the 73833's bells and whistles (PIP, 120hz, etc.) and the extra screen size for a savings of $2500.

Canceled the 73833 today and bought the Tosh from CC (with a 10% off coupon) for pickup tomorrow.

I figure that since this set will mostly be for standard TV watching (we have a HD 126" screen in the HT that we use for movie watching and major sporting events), I could do without some of the extras and the smaller screen size.

Looking forward to providing my feedback.

One question if anyone cares to answer:

1. We have a minivan that I can use to pick up the set tomorrow. The seats all fold down and based on the measurements I've seen, it'll fit right in the back. I would have to lay it down on it's back (or front) for the 3 mile drive home. Anyone see a problem with that?

For the 65" correct?

What's the story on the 10% off coupon? Is it a coupon code you enter on CC's Web site when you purchase for in-store pick-up or delivery?

I found a photocopy on the web of a 10% off coupon good until the end of the month. I had heard it's YMMV as they don't take photocopies, but figured I'd give it a try.

The employee said they couldn't take it, but said he might have another. He left for a few minutes and came back with another 10% off coupon he found in the back.

Also, if your a AAA member you can get a 10% off coupon at AAA website for CC.

Does any one know a place where I can get a decent stand for the 65" ? I have looked around and everyone wants $200+ for a stand which in my opinion is completely unreasonable. The cheapest stand I have found is at Ikea but they are quite a drive from my house.

Well, you'll be very hard pressed to find a decent stand for less than $200. Most of the really good stands will cost +$1000 (Salamander, B'ello, etc.). I decided to build my own. Should be done tomorrow and I'll have spent about $250 in materials.
