Thank you for that very thorough answer to my question. I have no objective means of determining whether or not my EX is running "hot" as I don't have an SPL meter and my Sony ES receiver has no "audyssey" type of auto-calibration system. I try to keep the sub balanced, first through the use of the test tones and source volume-matching feature of my receiver, and then by purely subjective fine tuning. While that method may be far from technically accurate, it does yield totally satisfactory results. I doubt my sub is TOO far out of whack with respect to the rest of my speakers. Nevertheless, the dynamic range of the "1812 Overture" is SO great that I think caution is smart insurance regardless of whether or not the sub is actually running hot.

Many say it trumps even the highly regarded Telarc versions...including the DVD-A and SACD!

Yes, my SACD is from Telarc and thank you so much for the link to the Mercury Living Presence...I am going to give it a spin!

Hi gavi, I need to stop over at the JBL thread...thanks for reminding me.

I built my first serious home theater around JBL products in 1990. I had these speakers just sitting around doing some boring background music in another part of the house and I decided to replace the surrounds on the woofers due to age.

WOW, they sound as good as new and I would love to find another LX-44 to use as my center speaker in a vertical alignment behind the screen...

You're very welcome but perhaps I should point out that Amazon seems to carry two versions of the "Mercury Living Presence" CD. In addition to the original, there is a 2007 remastered version. I don't know how much "better" the newer version might be but perhaps you can figure it out and let us know.

BTW, here's another user review comparing the Mercury "1812" to the DDD Telarc: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2FAB8T...cm_cr_rdp_perm

Awesome...I have added both to my Amazon Wishlist. My Birthday is coming up and the family is always asking me what I want...thanks again.

I feel bad. My HT is in the basement directly under our front door. My kids (15 & 11) have a bad habit of slaming the front door when coming in and leaving which causes the whole house to shake. While watching Live Free or Die Hard I thought the kids where having a ball slamming the upstairs door shut repeatedly causing the HT to shke. So I go do what any dad would do and I chew them out. "BUT DAD we've been doing our homework.....we haven't left the dining room. Your movie room keeps making the table shake and hard to write on....can you turn it down??" OOOOPPPPPSSSSSS My bad kids. I guess the MAX EXSTENTION on my new LFM-1 EX really does make me FEEL the low end. I would like to openly apologize to my kids. Dads do make mistakes.

-Alan

BTW .. Live Free or Die Hard AWESOME FOR YOUR SUB. Check out the scene where the F-22 attacks John

The Outlaw LFM-1 Plus is currently on sale for $550 ($630 shipped). Anyone know how long this promotion will last? Is this a good sub for HT?
I believe that is the regular price, not a sale. A little while ago the LFM-1PLUS was on sale for $450 with free shipping, now THATS a sale! Yes, the LFM-1PLUS is good for HT, but it's even better when actually on sale.

If you sign up for their e-mail list you'll get notifications of sales. As far as predicting when sales will be and what will be on sale...good luck with that.

You have got that right...

I will say that Outlaw *seems* to be running specials more often during the past 9 months or so vs. a couple of years ago...

Also, the sales that they've had recently have been really good.

Just received today from B-stock. The top of the sub looks almost like a wood grain surface. It does not look like the plexi-glass. Is this perhaps an older model?

Hi claytont, is this the protective cover that you have to peel back to expose the plexi-glass? I will search for a picture...

**EDIT** I couldn't find a pic with the brown protective "sheet" on top of the plexi...sorry.

Hello fellow Outlaw Owners...

I purchased an Elemental Designs (eD) A2-300 during a recent sale for my living room 5.1 set-up. I have had zero problems with my Outlaw subs but I wanted to hear another brand in my home and compare it to what I have.

Attached are three MS Word docs:

The first doc has all the specs, pricing and comparison pictures.

The second doc covers the Room EQ Wizard (REW) graph of all three subs.

The third doc covers the subjective test and conclusions.

I look forward to any and all comments...

Thanks for typing that up. I was on the fence between those three subs and purchased the EX 7 months ago and really love it. Right now my volume is around 3.25 and it sounds/feels great. Sometimes I play around with higher volume levels (re-adjusting Audyssey each time), but always settle back to 3-3.5ish. I notice that you had all of the subs around a volume of 4. Is that a good volume to start at when trying to find optimal results (without any sound equipment)?

Edit: I bought an Auralex gramma and now use a volume of 5.

Good Read. A few weeks back I saw in the official eD forums that you were buying one and hoped you'd do a write up. With that being said, I do feel that the eD would've been a great upgrade at the time but I do like my EX.

How does the sound quality stack up for each? I'd like to imagine the EX is a bit more articulate as well as able to produce higher spl's.

Thanks for the review laugsbach.

Hi tfoltz, when I had my EX subs nearfield as "end tables" for my sofa, I had the gain/volume set at 3 to 3.5. When I moved them to the front of the room, I am pretty sure I bumped them up to a setting of 4 or so.

Right now with all four of my Outlaw subs up front behind the AT screen, I have all four set at "4" and each one by itself produces 75dB with my AVR's test tone at my Listening Position (14')...combined they produce 85dB.

I think a setting of 3 to 4 is the best place to start...

Thanks for the review laugsbach.

You are welcome steven1110...

My living room truly is a "living room of death" for great sound quality. It is a large, open space with highly reflective surfaces at every turn! I decided to eliminate a subjective music demo with a Max Output setting and just focused on an aggressive movie demo and SPL measurements.

The EX is the clear winner between the three subs but man does eD give you a ton of bass for the money invested with the A2-300. A great test would be dual A2-300 subs vs. a single EX.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question directly...

It's no problem. Hopefully in the not-to-distant future I'll be able to take a eD sub for a spin too.

That works too...

You know, I'd be tempted to send off my Epik Castle to see what larrysubsbach thinks, but there are a few issues. First, and most importantly, I'd be subless for the duration of his review . Second, the thing is 26"x18"x26" and weighs close to 130 pounds - it would cost a ton to ship. Third, it's no longer in production so it wouldn't really matter if he said it's an amazing deal because you couldn't get one anyway. And fourth, he might like it too much and not send it back

Good name choice but craigsub might take some offense to larrysub.
