So the sub came in Friday. It wouldn't fit in my car at all even without the shipping boxes. I had to have a friend bring it home from work. It's massive in size

I have been listening to it for quite a while and there are a couple of questions I have

1. There is a tan color thing on top of the sub vi heard there was a shiny black plexiglas on top. Am I suppose to remove it? And if so how I haven't been able to and don't want to risk damaging anything

2. The sub is travel crazy far. My neighbor 1 house down ( about 10) through the grass outside can feel my sub and it's only on volume 4.5
I have heard about a Gramma isolation pad what does that do? At the same time my listening area is not "popping" I feel bass but it's not really loud. I have it setup in bass extension as that is what it shipped on

Thanks for any answered you may be able to provide

The tan thing on the top is a sticker. Just pull it off with your fingers.

For the other stuff I don't know

For those who own an I-Phone, I wanted you to know that you can download a clone of the Radio Shack analog SPL meter for $.99. For me it is invaluable and I just used it to set up a theater for a seminar in D.C. I compared it and the original meter and their read outs are virtually identical.

Which SPL app did you use? There are a few for $0.99.

Thanks

The Studio Six Digital meter (first one you come to on a search).

They actually claim their's is more accurate than the Radio Shack unit

Isolation pad, sub riser, bought or made, they all basically do the same thing. They get your sub off the ground, tighten bass response, and make your sub overall perform better. I learned about them on another forum where they are much talked about. I have an eD A5-350 on order and just finished making a riser for it. Typically they raise your sub off the ground by 3-6", most manufacturers use 4", mine almost hits 6". Most use carpet, I used sound elimination spray on mine, and have a 2" thick piece of polyfill on the bottom to pick up extra resonance. Cost me about $40 to make.

If you have thick carpeting, definitely get a Gramma to give the driver some breathing room.

So i think i understand the acoustic benefits, what about helping the the sub not travel all through the foundation of the house? Does it help that?

mrjktcvs: What is the point of the breathing room, isn't the sub at the same height from another object as it would be on the floor?

I just pulled the trigger on another LFM1-EX (2 now) that they have that awesome sale on right now. Price is so good that I didn’t even ask the wife, I’ll ask forgiveness later and let her go buy something. I can’t pass up this deal!

I love Outlaw!

Now:
2 x LFM1-EX
7 x 2200 Monoblock

3 years now on all of them with hard play and no problems.

I just realized that some of the pictures I posted back on the 3rd page of this thread are dead so Ill try to add newer ones. Heres a picture with the current 1 LFM1-EX

My new just need carpet riser

With the type of carpeting I have, the feet literally sink into the carpet. The driver would be that much closer since the level of the carpet would be higher directly underneath it.

That is an awesome app! Does it have the same correction factor as the Radio Shack one at low frequency or is it displaying the correct spl?

Its not so much the floor your trying to get away from. For instance, if you have a 10' ceiling, there are 3 direct positions you dont want, directly on the floor, directly on the ceiling, and directly at 5' in the middle. There are much better explanations on the bluray forum that you can check out on this....but I digress. So you want to be about 2' center of the driver off the floor or off the ceiling. And off the ceiling is just plain crazy, so that is where Risers come in. There are other acoustical benefits as well, and some people have made some crazy tall risers and tell of great benefit, though I think they look incredibly goofy and my wife would walk in and kick it down. So the overall compromise is a good little 4"-8" boost off the ground.

Might wanna check this out

FYI, the Outlaw sale was extended to midnight tomorrow. I did end up going with the used unit for $130 less than new/sale price, could really use the savings "in these troubled times"...

So nobody here has an ECS-10? Anybody know anybody that has one? I have a Plus in my living room, but my bedroom currently has an anemic Paradigm PDR-10, and doesn't have the space for a more popular big box.

The ECS-10 looks like a rebadged Chrysalis Photon-10/Velodyne Minivee-10...specs are identical.

Based on my experience with the Velodyne VMS-8 (which is the same as the Chrysalis Photon-8 and Velodyne Minivee-8)... I suspect the ECS-10 will be a clean, tight sub with surprising performance for it's small size.

That being said... I think it (along with the Chrysalis and Velodyne offerings) is overpriced for what it is.

I bought my VMS-8 for half off normal price, and for that it was a good deal. But no way I'd pay retail for that (or Photon-8, or Minivee-8) when there are so many other options in that price range.

While I don't doubt the ECS-10 is a great performer for its small size, even at the sale price I feel it's overpriced. I'd go for an Emotiva Ultra-10 or the new SVS SB-10NSD once it's available and save some cash.

BTW, I am assuming here that the ECS-10 is indeed a rebadged Chrysalis Photon-10... One grip Audioholics had with the Photon-8 was the thin cabinet walls (only 1/2" MDF)... Not sure if the Photon-10 has the same cabinet construction... but, IMO, a sub in that price range should have a stout cabinet with at least 3/4" MDF.

I received my LFM-1 Compact and set it up last night. I was immediately hit with dissapointment when I noticed all of the scratches/nicks on the cabinet. It almost looks like someone took a brillow pad to certain sections of the sub. I can let a nick or two go by but this definitely looks like a customer return sent out as new by accident. The sub wasn't in the cloth bag either (it was actually just sitting on it which was strange) nor were the spikes/discs/power cord in plastic bags. I called Outlaw and they also thought this was strange and have never heard of this happening. I need to take some pictures tonight to send to them but hopefully it gets resolved quickly. I have purchased a few things from them over the years and never had a problem. I know they will take care of it but hopefully it will be smooth process.

Was the box double taped? Sounds like it might have busted open during shipping. I spent a lot of years at UP and I know they might even put it in a new box.

Hey guys - quick question: my electrical outlet is pretty far from where I am going to place my LFM1-EX. Can I just connect an extension cord or do I need a certain type of power cord?? I need to run it approximately 20 feet..any help will be greatly appreciated.

Both LFM units utilize a 3.15A slow-blow fuse, implying average maximum power draw is less than ~380W. Any 3-prong extension cord should be fine, but as always, the lower the gauge #, the more power the cord can carry. Outlaw recommends 20A circuits, which as a facilities engineer I feel is completely unecessary unless you have another 15A worth of equipment connected to the same circuit you'll be using... Of course most audio pundits usually say "as big as you can afford/find", but I've had the pleasure of value engineering more than one of their designs back into reality!

Short answer: anything 3-prong, 16ga or larger, will probably be just fine.

Hey Leander! Thank you very much..just moved into a smaller place and have been dying to hook it up but was afraid I was going to make a huge mistake..thank you!

I have owned a number of great subs... Epik, JTR, DTS10, and Mael-X sonos, so I have a great idea of what is capable in my room. I bought an LFM-plus on the sale since I had nothing in my room (not acceptable) and I must say this is a great little sub. I watched the "losers" and was impressed by the output of a this budget sub. It won't knock the walls down (although it will shake them), but it sounds very nice. Great sub on a budget.

Just installed a monoblock outlaw audio m2200 (200watts @ 8ohm) amplifier for my center channel and when i ran the YPAO on my Yamaha RX-V1065, it set the speaker level to +4.0db while the L/R speaker levels were +1.0db ... any reason as to why the center channel has so much + ?

I'm just running a 3.1 set-up with the Monitor Audio RX2 bi-ampd to the RX-V1065 and the center channel (RX Centre) running through the m2200

the sound and vocals improved a lot but i was just wondering why the YPAO set it to +4.0 db but when i hooked it up before to the receiver, it was only +2.5db via the YPAO
post #2844 of 6802
Your receiver bi-amped to your mains should in theory be pushing ~210W (RX-V1065 is 105W/ch), and your mono-block pushing fairly close to that...

Given the likely individual speaker sensitivities and impedences between the mains/center, I'm not surprised you are seeing some variation in calibration levels. Most mains are indeed more power sensitive than even their matched center channel equivalents, so the variations you describe are somewhat intuitive in that regard as well.

PS - You posted your question in a forum/thread more or less dedicated to discussion about Outlaw subwoofers, but hope my response was helpful.

Hello, I am a new Outlaw owner, I just bought two LFM-1 EXs. Great subs so far, although I haven't had a chance to do a lot with them yet. I hooked them up and played some tunes, but I can't really dial them in until I get my projector back from its RMA. Anyway, I noticed that it would be fairly easy to set the Outlaws up so they could have their driver facing forward instead of downfiring. Does anyone use them in this manner? Would their be any advantage in sound quality?

Thanks!

I've seen a couple of people set them up this way. I can't imagine it would hurt anything. I tested mine with REW both on its side and right-side-up and the tests came out looking identical.

Hmm. Thanks for the response. I try it both ways and try to see if there is any difference, but I am guessing there won't be any.

I have had my Outlaw subs in just about every possible configuration and I have really liked them on their sides behind an AT screen:
