You are using the VTF1 in 2 ports open mode right? If not, that is the mode you should use in that situation. 3700 cu ft is still too big for a VTF1 anyhow, you are probably running that sub pretty hard to get reasonable bass output at your listening position. The LFM-1 EX would definitely be a big step up from a VTF1 though, I made a similar upgrade going from a STF2 to a VTF3. I would be looking at a LFM-1 EX or VTF3 if I were you, or perhaps duals of VTF2 or LFM-1 Plus.

Yep, dual ports open, the gain is at the first line on the knob and Audyssey puts it at -0.5 correction. It starts to struggle pretty bad during movies so I was leaning towards the LFM-1 EX if I could get it for the sale price.

It won't be at the sale price for a while, I would guess not until the fall. And even then, there is no guarantee that it will hit the same price as the last sale, they might just do a discount with the wireless device again. I would take a close look at the LFM-1 Plus or the higher end Hsu VTF subs if you didn't want to wait that long.

How is the output on the Plus compared to the EX? I know both will go a lot lower then what I have now. The Plus will fit a little bit better in my near-field spot (Next to couch) but will I get mid-bass punch or bass you can "feel" with the Plus, or EX for that matter?

Thanks for the help by the way
I believe output wise, they are similar, but the EX extends a few hertz lower. If you need sub 20 hz bass, go for the EX, but if you can live with bass just above 20 hz, the Plus ought to work well for you.

Well I'm living with bass in the 32hz range if I go by the VTF-1 in 2-port mode so that would be an improvement either way. I'm really looking for good output and bass you can feel with this upgrade, i'm just torn on getting a Plus now or waiting for the EX, preferably as B-stock.

The website says 115db for the Plus and 118db for the EX

I had a preorder on the EX when it went on sale and when it got pushed back twice I decided I couldn't wait any longer, so I went with a Plus. IMO it is fantastic. I am running it in a rather large room (4000 cu. ft.), and it does an excellent job with sound. It is by no mean pressurizing the room but it's output is phenomenal. I run the gain higher than most people on this forum at about 5. Scott at Outlaw told me that the extension on the Plus was capable of 18Hz. I say go with it.

For the people that have two EX's or Pluses......have you ever stacked them or placed the side by side? I just ordered a second plus and was wondering how a side by side setup sounds or if you stacked them how they held up.

Not that I know nearly a much as some of the guys on here, but if I had 2 Pluses I would put one of them near field so I could feel it a bit better. I can definitely feel mine after a sub crawl in an enormous room although not as much as I would like. Not that I'm disappointed. I am going to go for another Plus or maybe even an EX to add to my system at some point in the future. I officially have the bug.

Just for fun yea but in the end mine are on the sides of my mlp

Went ahead and ordered the LFM-1+

When it gets here, should I run it in 2 ports open like I did the VTF-1 or should I do 1 port open?

I've got the same receiver. YPAO tends to set the master sub volume too low and it does no auto eq under 31 Hz (i would even argue it rolls off from 25 hz). I have run REW numerous times after running YPAO, and YPAO has always produced unsatisfactory results in the lfe channel.

If you want good sub response with YPAO, you'll have to work it by hand.

I run mine with a port plugged, wanted more extension. Sounds great.

Try it with 1 port open and see what happens. Whether or not you need the extra SPL boost from 2 port open mode depends not only on room size, but how loud you listen to your setup and room placement/acoustics. Impossible for anyone here to predict.

Watched "Let the Bullets Fly" last night on Vudu via PS3. Quite impressed with the AQ and the LFE ... especially the drum beats are AMAZING! Every drum beat just hits you in the chest ... just loving my EX's .

Still patiently waiting for my pair of EX's to ship...

Fellow Outlaw's. I know this is kinda off topic, but needed to share.

So, I booked a trip to Aruba for summer vacation and managed to guilt my wife into picking up a pair of Kef IQ90's for my front soundstage. The center is no longer available @ Vann's, so I will be running in Phantom mode until aI figure out a matched center or other vendor. Pretty excited.

Congrats! I love the way my iq90's sound with my EX. I prefer the iq90s and the EX in stereo mode for music but adding in the iq60c and iq30's for 5.1 surround is amazing!! Good luck finding an iq60 or better yet another iq90 for your center. Enjoy!

Not able to use a 3rd IQ90 for a center, I need to upgrade my sorrounds, but for now, a center is all I need.

not happy I had to switch to Max output in my room to prevent the sub from thumping during Xmen first class...sigh

I played that scene last night with no issues or strange sounds so kinda strange. I have the plus in one port tuning mode. Audessey must be doing something? Or are you just pushing them that hard?

Hi pokekevin, did you ever get a chance to gain match your subs? Curious if this was lossy or lossless audio?

Lossy, tried gain matching but just didn't like it.
Had to set one of the EX's to max output since it kept "thumping" during the Magneto sat dish scene

What happens if you swap EX's location? Does it still thump with the other EX in middle of room?

Going to attempt to do that tomorrow...hopefully its not the sub...

I still cant tell though if its bottom out. Its a thud alright. Basically the second EX is in the middle of *two rooms* (the family room is open to a dining area) but is only about 8 feet away from the MLP. Since its in the middle I think Im causing it to work pretty darn hard. Its a LARGE room if you combine the two

Let us know how it goes. I had to do the same after upgrading to XT32 to keep my Plus from chuffing in a room that's 18x14x8 that's open to the kitchen and a small hallway. I will be moving to a house soon that has a room that's 18x18x10 that opens to a kitchen and dining room. Now I'm up in the air if I want to get another Plus, EX or sell the Plus and get a HSU VTF15.

Hey Kevin. Have you ever taken SPL readings at your listening position? Sounds like you are pushing them hard? Perhaps two more oughta do it...

I remember while looking at subs last year running across a cost effective spl meeter. Besides the radioshack meeter is there any good options $80 and under? I understand this an outlaw thread. I wanted to purchase one to help eq my plus after reading about YPAO not doing the best job. The parametric eq allows for a great amount of adjustment. I tried searching but didn't see anything but the ratshack meeter being recommended.
