I need a surround sound setup for my PS3 gaming, any advice?

My components area on my projector got blown out by a comcast HD box I was having installed this weekend. (I have a damage claim with them and I think I'm getting a new projector or a check)

I used my components in peace with my basic Receiver that has a great sound. Now I have to get a Surround sound system with audio optical because I will be using HDMI with my PS3 on the projector now.

I'm trying to spend $150-$200. I just need something basic with audio optical inputs.

I found a few, any other ideas?

I would recommend saving up more and getting at least a good Onkyo setup, all those systems are very bare with rather poor sound quality.

What do you think of this Samsung HT-P38
Integrated DVD/Receiver HTiB

It's a couple years old but someone i know is selling it for $80.

I just need something for my bed room that has audio optical input so I can play my PS3 using the HDMI on my projector.

I ordered a HDMI and Optical cord from Monoprice.com on Tuesday, I think I should have it between tomorrow and Saturday.

i agree with Sunkist on saving up for a better set. or go the component route and build your own system. that's what i did and while it cost a little more, i am infinitely more satisfied with the sq than with my old htib

I don't understand Zappdap... What does using optical from the PS3 have to do with HDMI to the projector?

I need sound from the PS3. My projector doesn't have sound, I have to put cords into a receiver right? Or can I plug the HDMI cord into my ps3 to the projector and then plug the av cords in and use the audio cords in my current receiver?

Yes this is what I did to, started with a crappy HTIB and then basically changed everything out with new components because the sound quality was very poor. Generally I would say stay away from anything with a built in DVD player, they usually have lower quality amps and less connections for future upgrades, plus the PS3 plays DVDs already. Since you are going to have a large projection screen you must have a pretty good sized room and any of these small cheap systems are not going to put out enough sound to fill it.

Yeah, you can use the AV cables for audio and then the HDMI to your projector for video. Even though it's only stereo sound, I'd do this in the meantime while saving for something like an Onkyo as everyone else has suggested.

Well Felgar I got the Samsung HT-P38 from a Craiglist member in my area and I like it. She had it for 2 years and it is in great shape. I set it up and it will work just fine until I can get a really good one.

I just purchased my house, so we did the kitchen and upstairs bathroom already. So once I get to my basement (maybe 6 months-Year) I will get an Onkyo.

I put my other Reciever downstairs on the 32 inch tv along with the Wii for guest to enjoy.

I'll keep the PS3 upstairs.

Oh BTW my room is a nice size but not HUGH. I have 2 doors to my room, one from the hallway and one to the middle room. I have some black out cloth going across the wall and covering the door to the middle room. (works great) I had to fold the cloth a little to take it from 102" to about 80". So I get about a 70" picture in the bed room with the distance I have the projector.

I then put a nice shelf above the screen and ran the cords to a couple of the speakers through the drop ceiling we have.

The bed is in the middle of the room so sitting or lying in the bed watching movies is great. In the corner I have a gaming chair with it's own surround sound that I will hook up to the Home Theather.

All in all I thank everyone for their advice and help. I'll post pictures this weekend if anyone cares.

Thanks,

---Zappdap
