MGS4 looks to be delayed until March of '08...?

Thread Starter
Sorry if this has been discussed already, hadn't seen a topic on it...

This SITE/LINK is suggesting that MGS4 has essentially been confirmed to be delayed until at least March of '08. Bad news but maybe it makes sense given that, at that point, the PS3 is virtually guaranteed to have a larger/large-enough user-base to warrant all its release glory.

Anyway though, what are you guys' thoughts on it all? Thanks...

EDIT: Also, here is a link from a while back that had IGN basically saying the same: CLICK ME

Below is the main text of that article, note how it's actually suggesting that the Japanese version may only come out in March '08, but that the American version may not actually see release until Q4 '08:

"Metal Gear Solid 4 Pushed to 2008

It's the news that nobody wants to hear, but after a hell of a lot of development time already, Hideo Kojima will delay his highly-anticipated final chapter of the Solid Snake story so that it can receive "more fine tuning" -- particularly in the online multiplayer department. I expect to see it pushed back to a Q1 or Q2 '08 release in Japan, while the American and European debuts are held back until quarter number 4.

Sadly, nobody at Kojima Productions or Konami Digital Entertainment will break the news to anyone until late in the summer or beyond."

That second link has a note suggesting also that the online portion of the game was conceived to be so advanced/elaborate that it was originally decided they would release it as an entirely seperate game. I guess beyond the "fine tuning" they are also delaying to be able to integrate it all into one complete package.

Sales have been sliding as the series moves forward, and by spring 08 we should have a lot more good games out for it to compete with.

I think it will look great, be fun, and be generally well received, but I don't think it will be the huge game it used to be.
I doubt this really surprises anyone.
They moved it because it's going multi-platform. There is no official confirmation yet, but it looks like it.
It really amazes me how long some of the games have been in production. Totally inexcusable. Another month gone by, no games to play. Thank you ps3.
Sucks. I am sick of the silly unreachable release dates put out. This game is going to be delayed a FULL YEAR.

I really wouldn't count on a "huge" install base even by then. The PS3 needs good games so bad NOW and in the next 6 months. Not 18 months from now.

There will be no big intstall base without a price drop AND exclusive AAA games.

So far neither has been done except for RFOM.
I can guarantee you by the time the new PS4 comes out, some games launched for release this year will have made it to the streets. That's about all I can guarantee.
The PS4 is not going to come out till 2011. MGS4 will be PS3 exclusive. They can not put it on the Xbox 360..because the xbox 360 only has less than 9 gigs of space on the DVD.

The PS3 will have over 11 million sold by this time next year...and the price will have dropped by at least $100 to $150 dollars by then.

Where are you getting "march"???

" while the American and European debuts are held back until quarter number 4."

With PS3 sales and attach rates so low, it'd be a really bad idea to release an exclusive game early. Esp. one that is high budget. Waiting for a decent install base is a good idea.

Thing is PS3 is gonna continue to sell horribly when it has no good exclusives and costs $200 more than the competition. With Halo 3 and probable 360 holiday price drop Sony has no chance this holiday season, they need MGS4 NOW, they will still get outsold regardless but unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat PS3's fate in the US is all but sealed.

Oh and "MGS 4 Won't be Compromised for 360's Sake"

Speaking on his Kojima Production Report podcast, Payton said that the game was being built exclusively on PS3 hardware to the specifications Hideo Kojima planned from the beginning. It was inferred that no special allowances were being made in anticipation of a 360 version of the game, which would have to fit onto discs with a smaller capacity than the Blu-ray discs used for PS3 games.

"I can tell you honestly at this point, we have not changed the game in any form with the idea of 'oh, we got to do this on 360.' Put aside whether or not we're developing for 360 or not, the game is built on the PS3 hardware, as you guys have known for the past two years or so."

Umm..you have to be kidding. They would simply spread the game over multiple disks.

He's referring to the fact that Gamestop has pushed the release date to March and it is being discussed on Many PS3 boards as such. It certainly may end up far beyond that as stated.

You really don't have to act like that. This isn't Gamespot. I saw that confirmation some time ago, but there is new info pointing in the opposite direction. MGS4 is costing a significant amount of money. It would be much less profitable to hold it exclusive if the PS3 cannot raise its sales. Kojima specifically avoided the conversation of exclusivity. Enjoy your current news:

Add that to the delay in release and it makes sense.

I seriously believe MGS4 will be ported to 360 later on down the road:

Payton knows fans have legitimate concerns about Kojima Productions possibly compromising the game's ambition due to issues arising from concurrent Xbox 360 development -- divided resources, less disc space, etc. -- and he addressed those directly:

"I can tell you honestly at this point, we have not changed the game in any form with the idea of 'oh, we got to do this on 360.' Put aside whether or not we're developing for 360 or not, the game is built on the PS3 hardware, as you guys have known for the past two years or so."

In other words: if MGS4 comes to Xbox 360, it has not affected the game's development. This is the same game Hideo Kojima decided to produce from day one. Make sure to listen to the podcast for more from Payton and the 1UP boys about Snake, Xbox 360 vs. PS3 and more.

**** this. I really hope Splinter Cell:Conviction gets ported sometimes down the road too, but it's nice to know that if MGS4 does get ported to 360, the PS3 version will still be intact.

Thats 1up OPINION, its nowhere concrete!

I dont like 1up anyway, so they BS is usually BS. Now, I'll wait for the game on PS3 - whether it comes for X360/Wii/PC or what not is not going to affect me in any way of buying that game.

Just like with 1000 other games that hopefully will be released this whole GEN.

Official Confirmation is in. In fact, we already have the 360 box art, take a look:

That's correct, but I see his comments the same way. I stated it has not been confirmed and said that it looks like it was true. It definately was implied. Why didn't he just say it wasn't being developed for the 360? To paraphrase, he said to put aside the conversation of whether they were or were not developing for the 360 and said the game had not been altered to accomodate what that 360 hardware can do. To me that's pretty darn close to admitting it.

We can agree to disagree, if you like. I won't bring it up again.

Why are you loosing sleep over this dude? Let it rest- if it comes out on X360 great, X360 owners can play it, and stop whining for once.

For once? First of all, you don't even know me. Second, I'm not losing any sleep over it or you. It doesn't matter whether it does or doesn't. This thread is about the delay in the games release and I was speaking to one of the possible reasons. Third, if you don't want a response, don't quote people and challenge what was said. I responded to clarify what I meant and suddenly I'm whining. You're ridiculous.

Thanks! Anything else you want to call me? Dude - what are you so pissed about huh?

Delay? Anyone who assumed the game will come out this year was obviously not aware of how Mr. Kojima has released 4 Other irritations of MGS.

Starting off with PS1 and MGS - It was promised, then delayed to be fine tuned. Its normal, only a fool will rush its product.

Then again, you're right.

I don't know. Are you going to call me anything else? I'm a whiner, remember? If it is lost as an exclusive, it is a big deal to many PS3 owners. It would increase system sales. That's it. That's the point. I never argued anything about Kojima's history or right to delay the product.
Clearly the benefit to this game from being on the PS3 will be the HD CGI cutscenes. This extra space isn't automatically going to make the game fun to play.

MGS2 is the only game I took out of my PS2 in the middle of what had to have been a 10 minute long cutscene. I never played the game again. Maybe Kojima should play some Splinter Cell or Thief to see how the genre is done.

Fair enough, however I did not call you - I was only speaking in general. "Whiners"

Anyway, we agree to disagree, and vice versa. It is a good thing man, if we didn't then the games will not be where they are today.

After all it is the consumer that drives this industry.

Cool. No worries.

Same here bro, no need to like take it as a life or death. We all simply share different opinions, and one thing that makes us different as you can tell so far is that some of us might be a little more heard headed than usual
