There are very few non tab-tentioned screens that stay flat and stable over longer time. The ones that might stay flat are mostly think 1mm or more. If you can go for a good tab-tentioned design.

Hello:

I faced the same decision about a month ago. I wanted an electric screen. I hate the look of the tensioned models but feared I would not get a smooth picture without it.

I made the decision to go with a non-tensioned Da-Lite electric screen and I am VERY happy.

The screen is very heavy. It hangs pretty tight by it's own weight.

I might be wrong here but does the answer to this not also
depend on the material. For example, I am under trhe impression
that the High Power material is for a non-tensioned screen.

Not long. I would say a little over a month. So I can't attest to the long term performance of the screen.

I did the opposite of Splotto. I went with the Da-Lite Cosmo Electrol Tensioned HCCV 4 years ago. I actually think the tab tensioning looks cool. Anyhow, the screen looks the same today as it did the day I hung it. Never a single problem with it. I personally think any curling or waves would bug the crap out of me. JMHO

I've had a tabed tensioned 16x9 100" Stewart Pull Down for almost 4 years, and it's still smooth and wrinkle free. So I believe they work. And I think the tab-tension screens look cool as well.

That's usually a safe bet. :-)

ertang,

I'm facing the same decision and would love to hear what you go with. I'm leaning towards the tensioned screen to avoid the dreaded waves over time. For a slightly lower price, you might consider the Elite model which Jason Turk reviewed on this forum a few month ago.

Its a tough decision. I was in the same boat. I've seen non-tensioned screens that were perfectly flat. I previously had a non-tensioned screen for six years and the waves drove me crazy. Especially on pans. I asked myself if I was willing to gamble on getting a flat non-tensioned screen and living with it for another six years. I sucked it up and bought tensioned Designer Contour Electrol love it. Completely flat.
