I have a 46" XB3, and would like to get a cheap upconverting DVD player.

Here are the choices! Which one is better?

Panasonic S53
Sony DVP-NS75H

Out of curiosity, why just those choices? There are many good upconverters in the sub-$100 price band, some of which have 1080p resolution like your XB3 (eg, Philips 5982 for under $70) - DR

I tried the Toshiba Sd5000. I can vouch to stay away from that one. It had random freeze ups(3-5sec pauses) and wouldn't play a dvd out of the 5 I watched on it. The one that didn't play played on the 360. I also read user reports on amazon having the same issues.

I did exchange it for the Sony NS85(5 disc version) I can say that the build and PQ are far superior then that of the Tosh though I still think I may take it bac and get the Tosh A2 HD player if they rebates pan out this weekend and reduce the price quite a bit.

I have the Panny S52. It's reliable and its PQ (720p via HDMI) is very good, so I guess the S53 will be a good choice.

My take from reading both would be to get the Sony.

I've had the Sony NS75H for a couple of months now and I must say it is great. I have it connected to my Panasonic plasma via hdmi with optical out to my Onkyo receiver. I couldn't be happier with it, great PQ and SQ.

I live in Toronto, and the Futureshop/Bestbuy only has these 2 budget upconverters that I think meets my needs.

I already have a PS3 to do high def, and its quite decent w/ standard DVD(though it only upconverts to 480p), problem is my mom sometimes uses the TV and she has no clue on how to use the PS3.

Thank you all for your input, I'm leading towards the Sony.

I also bought recently the Sony NS75H. I am satisfied with the PQ.
