Newbie question about price talk

Thread Starter
Hi,

I apologize if I break the rules of this forum by asking about the rules...

I see a lot of all-uppercase warnings about NO PRICE TALK, but have been unable to see a more definitive rule or motivation of this decision in either the Forum Rules or the FAQ. What exactly constitutes price talk? If I say that I'm undecided between TV set A and B, where A goes for a street price of $1500 and B goes for $1800, so is feature X of B worth the extra $300, does mentioning a street price without mentioning a store already constitute price talk?
I ask because I have been using the dpreview-dot-com forums for digital camera discussions and found that return-on-investment comparisons between products are very valuable. I am looking for a similar forum for HDTV matters, and AVS has the best reputation, but the amount of uppercase letters leaves me unsure.

Thanks,
Zak

PS:
I also apologize if this is the incorrect forum to ask this question, I didn't see a general questions forum.

Welcome Zak:

It is not allowed for all it does is bring out dealers and marketing to push product and their price on the site. This site is first and foremost for support and advancement of HT gear. Not where to find the best price as other sites do that much better. (We also are very aware of fraud that can take place on CE products.) As such, we do what we can.

If we allowed price to be started without the name of the store, that then leads to "What store?" or "I can beat that." etc.

Welcome to the site.

you did not ask and David did not answer, but MRSP is allowed (though in your case it might not be all that important).

David:

Are threads like this okay?

This seems to be the norm in the HD resolution hardware forums.

Nope...Not at all as it leads site marketing. These have even been known to be started just to be able then to market a site. (Thus looking like one member helping another.) Only place it is allowed is the Best Found Deals section that AVS Club members have access to.

You might want to have one of the mods clean up the HD-DVD hardware forum... there are quite a few buy from X retailer at X price...it should be easy since they are pretty open about these types of discussions...normally it's noted in the title.

That thread was not started asking for where to buy or by a marketing person. Prices are dropping, and that is a good thing if they ever want the masses to buy into it. Today, most general households do not even own sets that can even display HD though. But we are getting their.

Got it...I know that in the projectors area...NO retail price discussion is allowed, other than MSRP. So I was confused about the street price discussion in the HD hardware forums, whether you viewed that differently than projectors or not.

I also assume that the "zero tolerence" policy on Costco in projectors does not apply to the HD hardware forums?

Thanks for the clarifications

Ron

I am curious about this too. I know in the LCD/Plasma forum price talk wasn't allowed but as I look in the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD forums there are threads for deals that are stickied. What's the policy here?

Some areas are we allow let it slide some for they are not really coming from dealers trying to sell you a plasma. DVD and the like do not have much money in them so we dedicate a thread or what have you to keep it in one place more or less. We do not want this site to be just about marketing within threads. Once it goes that way, the site is more or less dead for the info will no longer be helpful. Hard to control, that is for sure.

Cool, thanks for the clarification.
