In the past, the CBM-170 has compared very well to predecessors of the 686. The CBM-170 (now the SE) has also had a revision, but not as recently.

I'm in St. Louis, Missouri.

We found a single light cherry cabinet. This is the very last one so please give us a call if you would like to order it.

How about that for service.

It might be better to contact Ascend directly as you might get a faster response that way.

Thanks Bill - I like to cover all bases with them. It took Dave a while to answer a question the last time I went that route. I imagine they are very busy with the towers and working to get parts for them and the upgrades. I was hoping to catch him since I saw a post on this thread. Have a good one. Steve

Hey Steve,

I have found calling Ascend to be the best bet which you might have done already. But it is a good idea to cover as many bases as possible. I dealt with Dina quite a bit and she was great. I found Ascend's service to be about the best I have ever experienced. Take care.

Let me explain: I had a Sierra-1 (non-NrT) listening session yesterday, and for all practical purposes, the sound reproduction was flawless. I could imagine the sound getting worse, but not better - at least not to my ears. I acknowledge an instrument which is far more sensitive than my ear could probably tell the difference, but I admit failing to see how that would be relevant to me.

The downside to making a speaker as high a quality as a Sierra-1 is that upgrading them becomes pointless. Josh Groban could have been standing in my living room, and I bet it would have sounded worse live.

This sounds like you've not heard the NrTs but are already convinced they will sound worse?

And this must be true despite Dave's years of speaker design experience, and that the Sierra-1 could not possibly sound any better with a more advanced tweeter & crossover. All of those bookshelf speakers costing many times the Sierra-1's price are only that: more expensive.

I'm going home tonight and convince myself that my Sierra-1 NrT's really do not sound better than the stock Sierra-1.

I would say he is a better man than you seeing he (Dave F.) designed the Sierra-1 and the NrT upgrade.

I can not understand why someone would say the above without ever hearing the Sierra-1 with the NrT upgrade.

Its nice that you are giving the Sierra-1s such high praise. But to say that to upgrade the Sierra-1s or any high quality speaker is pointless makes absolutely no sense at all. The Sierra-1 was I believe designed to raise the bar to other Ascend offerings which also sound quite well and are very highly regarded.

Now if Dave F. did not have the passion to make a better speaker then maybe there wouldn't have been a Sierra-1 speaker at all. So if speaker builders had your mindset there would be no improvements and the desire of competing speaker builders to excel as well wouldn't be a reality.

^^^^^^
well put Bill.

My 2 cents,
Azanon, I have owned several pairs of sierras since day one and recently upgraded one to a Nrt version and did a side by side comparison by simply a press of the remote. I am not going to tell you which one is better, thats for you to decide, but I will tell you there is a noticeable difference. Simply put, I prefer the Nrt's added detail, clarity, midrange performance, and imaging. If you have the opportunity, I recommend you do the same so that you can be more informed

Not to beat a dead horse, but as some including Dave himself have pointed out, the Nrt may not be for everyone. In fact, the sierra-1 itself is not too shabby

Don't you just LOVE that type of experience -- there is nothing quite like it, everything just clicks and you (the listener) are transported into the music...

I was listening to Brandon's new towers last night (Alicia Keys, "Songs in A Minor") and I became so deeply lost in the music that when the CD ended, I felt as if I had awoken from a deep sleep. Nothing relaxes me in this way and stress just melts away... This is a very personal experience and there have been only a handful of speakers that have allowed me to get into it that deep, that emotional... It is the drive behind each loudspeaker I have designed for Ascend...

I am going to miss this pair

AZ, it makes me very happy that the Sierra-1 bring you to that level... They are a fantastic loudspeaker and as popular as ever. That being said, you must have a listen to the new towers. It is near 80 degs and not a cloud in the sky here in Southern California today - come visit

Dave,
I am pumped that the ship date is almost here now! It has been quite the journey. I almost feel bad I am taking away your first pair of towers, your pride and joy of recent

Dina said you had some other locals over for a listen, hopefully they enjoy them as well, maybe they will post some thoughts?

Azanon, take Dave up on his offer, I think my towers ship tomorrow

Hi Steve,

Sorry for any delay -- I am behind on everything these days but I am trying to get as much listening time in on Brandon's new towers before I must, sadly, say goodbye to them tomorrow afternoon

We are 100% out of NrT crossovers right now and I am trying to work out some details regarding getting the next batch in. I should have a confirmation later next week with regard to a firm delivery date. Off the top of my head, I would guess 5 weeks.

I think Dave meant for AZ to come listen to your towers, so that he can hold on to them a little longer.

Seriously...can't wait until you have them in your system. You WILL be very happy!
Good point Azanon, dont get any ideas!
You guys in sunny Cal aren't expecting any sudden bad weather or earthquakes tomorrow which might delay things further are you?

I am very excited, I feel like I have dragged some of you on about their arrival. I think I can say this time, they should truly be on their way soon! I hope folks reading this dont have high hopes for some well written review once they arrive, I'm horrible at that.

I have become very attached to this pair... are you sure you still want these? You have been waiting for about 18 months now, what is another few months?

Promise me one thing -- if sometime in the future you are ready for that next big upgrade, please do not sell this pair to anyone but me...

Yes -- a few more demos but I don't know if they are active on any forums. Feedback has been spectacular and the results of the demos have increased our pre-order list.

Come see and hear them when you get off work today... Last chance, unless Brandon changes his mind (hoping.)

Geez...I really wish I could!

Leave the back door open, and you can tell Brandon they went missing.
I'm pretty sure
Wow 18 months, time has flown by. I remember some of our first conversations back when this all began.

To be honest, I hope this pair is truly the last pair of main speakers I buy for a very long time. If for some reason that day comes, you will be the first person I contact....I give you my word! In reality, it would probably be your fault that I sold them, I would most likely be upgrading to the Ascend Tower Gen 2's

Glad to hear the feedback on them is so positive, how did they like that PB finish? I have seen quite a few forum members here and there mention they were added to the pre-order list, even the gentleman I bought some natural sierras off of for my parents is on it.

I may just jump out of my desk chair when my UPS tracking # arrives after tomorrow.

Brandon

Hey Patrick,
Yup, its close now. I was thinking of inviting you and the boys down for a listen if we can all work it out?

I did not forget about the drinks / dinner. The wife and I have been very busy with bachelor / bachelorette parties, just got back from FL for a week, etc lately. We will be downtown most of this Saturday celebrating St Patty's day if you wanted to meet up? I believe the parade is Saturday as well.
St. Patricks for Patrick usually spells trouble

But I think that sounds fun, I'll be in touch with you guys....

My schedule has been really whacked out!

I may have missed it (or forgotten and can't find the answer now), but can anyone give me a quick run down of how the new towers stacked up to the Songtowers, which seems to be a good measuring stick? I don't recall any detailed conclusions from the listening tests, but I'm curious. I assume they compared favorably? Apologize in advance if this has been covered over and over. I'm getting old.

There were some thoughts posted on the Ascend forum.

Bottomline...there's a new measuring stick.
