Is this way too close together? I think they sound great where they are but having never heard them before I don't know if they could sound even better.

Is anyone out there using these in a less than ideal/narrow placement situation? And in terms of experimentation I MIGHT have a few inches here and there, but anything more would be a revamp of the entire room. The issue I'm concerned with is 40" between the speakers but 90" from my ears.
Looks like you've got things pretty much figured out. You are aware that it's not optimal placement, and so you will not be getting optimal results. It's hard to quantify how much exactly it will impact performance, but it probably will.
Having the two speakers closer together will result in having an audio image which is less wide than if the speakers were further apart from each other.
Have you never heard something like this?
Having speakers 40 inch apart is much better than having them 16 inches apart, and they're still Ascend Sierras, you'll just not get the best imaging they can offer... If you can get closer to them, that would definitely improve imaging. But one thing also to consider is that the further the speakers are from the side walls, and the closer you are to the speakers, the less reflections become an issue, so while you might not have as wide imaging, you might benefit from some clarity/detail improvement.
IMHO, it'll probably be fine, especially if you don't mind not having the widest soundstage possible...
I did try to place the speakers very close together around the center of my room, and sat very close to the Sierras, and it sounded very good if I remember correctly, very detailed. Reducing reflections and room interaction does wonders, but I wasn't as far as you comparatively to the speaker width... But my problem with that setup, it's just that it's not a practical or even possible setup in my HT/music room...
