The upgrade to the RAAL is close to the same price for a stock Sierra-1. So I am debating on selling my existing Sierra-1's and going with the towers, or just upgrading the tweeters and crossovers. Hmmm....decisions....decisions!

Don't know if it's much help but I bought my Sierra-1s used, paid $1000 for L/C/R, the center only having the NrT upgrade, in piano black. There was damage to one of the corners of one speaker, otherwise cosmetically fine (believe the guy's kid knocked one off the stand onto the floor). I had been checking craigslist and the classifieds on a couple sites for a while and was just about to go new when I saw that ad....every now and then I check for used Ascends for the heck of it and I rarely see any, and the last couple were 170s, but weren't even SE models...

Those short lived versions are a different story.

I received my Sierra 1's on the 27th and I could not be happier. I will be enjoying these for years to come for sure. I've certainly never owned a speaker as high quality as this. These are amazing in both build quality and sound. I've never felt a speaker cabinet this solid ever. I don't think I'll be investing in any more speakers from now on. The only thing on my mind is how do the RAAL tweeters sound, if I could afford them!

Quick question on the Sierra 1 monitors:
I've noticed in pictures that some have a logo on the front, near the botton, and some don't.
Was this a running change at some point? An extra cost?

Has anyone listened to the KEF q300s? I find the q300s open airy and detailed.
My came with the Ascend logo unattached....I essentially could put it where I like...I chose not to use it...smile.gif

Thanks for the replies. So they have an adhesive on the back, so you can place them on the speaker like you would a sticker?
Pretty much...I thought about putting them on the cover and not the actual speaker surface....heh...I guess, I never got around to it....redface.gif

My Towers didn't come with a logo as I recall...no biggie...smile.gif

Hi beaveav,

We include (2) logos with each pair but they are not installed on the speakers. Completely your choice if you want to use them or not. Many years ago we did adhere them prior to shipping but many customers prefer to have the "logoless" look for the Sierra-1.
I ended up going logoless as well since the Sierras are such gorgeous speakers and I appreciated the slightly cleaner look.

Thanks a lot for all the replies!

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who's been able to compare the Sierra 1 to the Q300.

If you find a pair of Q300's in the LA area for a listen, I'd be willing to meet you there with my Sierra-1's (non NrT).

I'd be interested in this comparison. I narrowed down my latest choice to the Sierra-1 and Q300s (was unable to audition either) and at the last minute chose the Kef. While I'm perfectly pleased (until the next time) I'll always wonder... wink.gif

Nothing wrong with that, KEF makes a good speaker.

I've heard the R300, and thought it was nice...but didn't make me think about changing my Sierra-1's. I've have also had the 201/2's in my room.

To be fair - a $480 vs $850 (per pair) speaker wink.gif I'd assume the Sierra 1 is better, I'm just curious how much better.

And I just really enjoy listening to different speakers wink.gif

The Q 300's retail at $649..... Hope you get the chance to hear them side by side.
Unbridled beat me to it.

Yes, I suspect the Ascends are better, just not sure they're $300 better (b stock prices). With the difference I bought a pair of Emp Tek E41-B.

"Look honey, two pairs for the price of one!" biggrin.gif

Good catch - I tend to think in street price vs retail price. The accessories4less price for a Q300 pair is $480, and most KEF dealers I've visited will match (or come very close to matching) the A4L price. I just checked the Ascend website - the B-stock Sierra1 price is $790.

So to correct myself ...

To be real though, at a $300 price difference we're still talking two different classes of speakers (which was my point). And with the Sierra 1 being an ID brand speaker you'd naturally expect the B-stock price to have less of a differential than with a B&M distributed brand like KEF.

In the end though ... I just really enjoy listening to different speakers wink.gif

I hope you get to hear both and come to your own conclusions, not just look at the price....

So I'm really interested in picking up some ascend sierra-1 for front lcr, and 170se's for surround. They sound like just what I'm looking for. Neutral, great midrange, no sibilance in the highs.

I have been hearing good reviews all around, with a couple mentions of bass extension being good, but bass definition being sort of like one note. Thoughts, any truth to this negative? Also, I believe a TM bookshelf on its side would sound better than a usual MTM center, but I haven't tried it out before. How is the sierra-1 on its side as center?

I don't know about being one note... They play really deep for a bookshelf but I cross them over high and let a sub take care of the lows, I find this the best for me personally. I have Sierra-1 NrT as my LCR and the HTM-200se in the mail for my rears and the Sierra-1s are just soo good I'm really having a hard time jumping up to the towers or horizon as a LCR. K last night I watched the amazing spider man(the new one) near the end there's a screen when the chief cop and spider man are fighting the big lizards dude and you can hear the shotgun shells coming out of the shotgun and hit the floor and bounce! It does it in a way that makes it sound like its in your room and the shells really sound like their bounce off of my floors and this is in the mix of dialog and a ton of action.

I have had my Sierra's for a coupe of years now, so I will try and relate my thoughts
On their sound as best I can.
When listening to two channel music I generally have the sub on as well, however, from time to time
I want to hear just the front left and rights.
When I do, I can hostelry say the bass is definitely not one note.
My living room setup which is comprised of the ascends and an oppo 93 as well as an outlaw sub
And denon 4311 is not treated.
We have a rug on hardwood floors, lots of wood on our walls in a fairly open room.
Definition in the bass is not lacking under these less than ideal conditions.

My basement setup is treated with absorptive panels in first reflection points and when I set the sierras up down there
The clarity and focus became that much more apparent.
I have never regretted purchasing these speakers and have no intention of letting them go ( upgrading to Sierra 2's is another story ;-)
I hope you get a chance to hear them for yourself.

Sounds good. Did you guys compare anything to the sierra-1?

I'm hoping to get bookshelf or tower speakers that at least have enough bass extension and punch for 2 channel to be enjoyable for music without a subwoofer.
I compared them to the Paradigm Studio 20s and 60s, I found the NrT tweeter upgrade were MUCH better than those, I think the stock tweeter matches up with the Studio 20s. I'm happy with their performance for music without a sub but for movies you need a sub, even towers need a sub for movies. I honestly have no complains with the NrT Sierra-1s.
I think the Sierras are great without a subwoofer for most types of music. For bass heavy (House, Hip-Hop) music however, a subwoofer is a good idea. As the others have already said, for HT a subwoofer is a must.
It sounds like you will listening to music at least as much as watching movies/tv ( though I am guessing )
If that is in fact the case, try and listen to a variety of speakers, ideally in your own home.
Are you able to audition other brands? You may be able to hear Sierras owned by one of the members of this forum
Or ascends own forum.
I owned polk monitor 60's before I purchased my Sierra's so for me it was a significant upgrade in audio quality.
I have since heard a number of high end speakers.
In my basement setup I have Triad Gold LCRs they are amazing but they are also over twice as much as the sierras.
For the money the Sierra 1's are hard to beat.
But do go forth and check out as many different speakers as you can!

Happy listening
I would go out and listen to more, but seems like there is a lack of neutral speakers. Maybe revel, psb. Don't know what else I should listen to.
