Based on a conversation that I had with Dave a while back, he said that the Sierra-1 that is modified to use the 70-20xr RAAL will be a step above the Sierra-2. Is that still the case? That is what lead me to have Dave modify my existing Sierra-1's instead of waiting to purchase the Sierra-2.

Does anyone know which mid-woofer will be used in the Sierra-2? Will it also be a 2-way?

I am absolutely thrilled with my Sierra-1 RAAL upgrade! I plan to build some mid-bass cabinets to house the JBL-2226 woofer that will be actively crossed over to my Sierra-1's, while maintaining the stock passive for the mids & high frequencies. I plan to build 3 of these cabinets, one for each LCR, and I am hoping that this gets me closer to the sound of the Sierra Tower!

Wise choice.. Once you go RAAL, everything will sound a bit boring and dull. It has the best decay time, which ultimately translated to the fastest start and stop time, which means everything that was recorded when the musician recorded is going to be captured through the RAAL. And its super detailed which means if your source is a opera singer in a hall, you will get to hear the full scale recreated through your speakers including the reverbs bouncing from the walls etc.

Its a really good tweeter and creates the most realistic sound. Super easy on the ears.

thanks for sharing and I am very happy that you are enjoying your RAAL 70-20 Sierra-1s!

Several things have changed in the Sierra-2 since our initial discussion regarding RAAL 70-20 Sierra-1 vs. Sierra-2. As things stand now, it is difficult to say which is actually the better speaker, much depends on the application. The 70-20xr ribbon tweeter is the overall "better" tweeter, but in this application, I am not sure anyone could actually hear that difference.

Can you tell us the price for the Sierra 2's and when it will be available?

Hi Naim101,

to keep up with the latest on our forthcoming Sierra-2, I recommend joining our community forum and taking part in the discussions there.

What are the specs on the Sierra-2? Are they going to be 2-way or 3-way? What mids and tweeters will be used?

Marty...it is best to follow along about the Sierra-2 in the Ascend forum.

Since the Sierra-1 can be upgraded to the Sierra-2, it is safe to say it will be a 2-way. The tweeter has already been discussed, it will be a custom RAAL. No word on the mid-woofer.

The basic details of the Sierra-2 have now been released - drivers, crossover, pricing. Details are available at the Ascend Acoustics forum. There hasn't been an official product announcement yet, so things like measurements and listening impressions are not yet published.

The best thing to do is follow along on the Ascend forum.

All we know for sure is:
1. The tweeter is a totally custom RAAL ribbon designed as a drop-in replacement for the standard & NrT tweeters.
2. The mid-woofer is an all new custom design from SEAS using a cast magnesium basket. No other details have been released yet.
3. There will be all new crossovers with air-core inductors, metalized polypropylene caps and non-inductive resistors. No other info released yet.
4. A new pair of Sierra-2's start at $1448 in the natural finish.
5. The upgrade kits to transform a standard or NrT Sierra to a -2 are $388/Ea. - $776/Pr.
6. The refunds for returned original components [One set = (1)Tweeter+(1)Woofer+(1)Crossover) are: Standard Sierra-1 = $31 each set; Sierra-1/Nrt = $63 each set.

So, if you have a set of NrT's you will be upgrading it will run you $650 after the refund, not taking into account shipping of course.

Mind sharing some pics over here? I'm not going to join the forum just for a peek. Thanks. Sure sounds like it is going to be expensive.

I'll see about the pictures.

The pricing info was already posted here earlier.

I wonder how this new "custom" RAAL compares to the 70-20xr that was used in the Sierra Towers? I had my stock Sierra-1's shipped back to Ascend around 8 months ago for an upgrade to the same 70-20xr RAAL tweeter used in the Sierra Tower.

I am also curious as to how this new Seas woofer compares to the one in the original stock Sierra-1? I vaguely remember Dave mentioning that the Sierra-1's with the upgraded 70-20xr, like mine, will be a step above the Sierra-2, but that was a while back, and I just can't help but wonder if that is still the case?

Marty...I believe all of these have been topics in the thread I posted.

I also believe Dave replied to you about your upgraded Sierra-1's to the Sierra-2 in this or another thread. #2892 of this thread

Ah, I see it now. I've read through this thread, but it's been awhile since its been posted in and I forgot lol. $1500 for bookshelves is likely out of my price range, might be able to swing some stock Sierra-1s eventually, though. I'd still like to see some pics of the 2s, though.

I guess you would have to log in the Ascend Forum and check the picture posted there. I looks awesome!

I plan on buying a Sierra-2 Center and purchase the upgrade kits for the LRs.. It looks like its gonna be a killer speaker

I've kind of been waiting to hear the Sierra 2 before I upgrade to the LS-50. Appears they are the almost exactly the same price.

Hope someone has a chance to compare these two soon!

You know you should compare them yourself. smile.gif

You are not too far from Ascend...

I meant compare side-by-side - But your right, I probably will end up doing it myself wink.gif

Does anyone know if the cabinet dimensions of the Sierra 2 are identical to the Sierra 1?
Yes. Same size cabinet. If you get a US made model the port is bigger.
US Made models wont be in til the end of this month.

Just a point of clarification. The port mounting flange/flare is bigger, but the actual port tube size is the same.

The US made cabinets (which are actually made in California) will also have some detail that the overseas cabinets do not....a nice reveal around the front baffle.

I've had the sierra-2's for over a month now and can't imagine how any bookshelf speaker anywhere could be any better.

I know, but it is somewhat of a necessary evil to keep bandwidth under control. We should have the website fully updated soon smile.gif
