That sounds like my situation too. First I sent it in because it wouldn't even turn on and the LEDs were all flashing. Then I had my first bulb go outafter about 600 hours. Luckily I had a spare bulb from a deal when I bought it. That has 500 hours on it and I'm fearing the worst.

if anyone gets head office phone number can you share. They only want to give me a discount on the bulb. I tried the bulb in a friends projector and works fine. And they are saying the bulb needs replacing.

Well, I sent mine back to Optoma Canada today for service. Took 2 days to get an RMA #.

On the phone, I asked tech support if they've heard of this problem before, and they (of course) said no.

I didn't specifically say that it was a "lamp driver" problem. I only stated that the bulb shuts off after a minute.

Either way, I hope the problem gets fixed, and soon! I've had HD withdrawal for the past 5 days.

Ask for Robert S. @ tech support next time.
I think that if you have to send the PJ for service, your warranty should start over. I know it ain't happening, but it should.
If this happens to my PJ again after they "repair" it, I'm going to ask them to replace it with a different model, equal or better.
I'm glad I found this thread. It will provide extra documentation for me if needed.

Hey Dragon Reborn . let me know what they tell you. Mine is also at optoma canada. They are obviously lying to you because they got my projector early last week and I told them that when I turn it on i get picture for about 30 sec and then black screen. They came back and said I need to buy a new bulb. So I will be talking to the managers there and see if they want to make things right. I think they want 3 hundred and something for a new bulb.

This is very interesting, has anyone looked at the webpage I posted the previous page? It seems as if this is almost normal, but I'm still on the fence about returning the brand new unit which I just bought.

One thing I did notice is my new unit says "Optoma HD72 v2" in windows, where as older units do not have the v2.

Wow...I was reading this thread several months ago and wondered if I just was one of the lucky ones. I purchased my HD72 in September of 06. Well, just two days ago, my projector is now doing the same thing. I am still on my original bulb with approximately 1000 hours of use. (I have not checked the usage in quite awhile) Basically the problem is exactly the same as you all. My projector fires up and the brightness looks ok...however, after about 30-60 seconds the projector shuts the lamp off. There are no warning led lights and the projector appears to run normally..however with no lamp.

I will be contacting Optoma shortly and let you know how I am treated. However I wanted to get some opinions from you all. I received a free lamp when I originally ordered the projector. Do any of you think I should install it and send it in to Optoma if they give me an RMA with the new lamp...or the old lamp. I am worried that if I send the old lamp they will just say that I need to replace...however, if I send them the new lamp, will I chance losing a $400 bulb...or even worse, my projector works for about 600 hours and then fails.

Interesting. I have a sick feeling that they'll tell me the same thing too.

Did they contact you by phone or did they just ship the projector back to you?

How long did it take for them to diagnose the "new bulb" solution?

$300+ sounds about right for a new bulb. Do you remember exactly how much? I ordered one from projectorbulbs.ca because I thought my bulb was the problem. It was $405. I might end up canceling that order if Optoma will sell it for $300+.

It sounds like you'll get an answer to the problem sooner than me, so if you don't mind, post your results here or PM me. I'll post mine when I hear from them (next week????????).

Thats a tough one. If it were me I would send it to them with the old lamp. I wouldn't risk losing the new lamp.

I will definitely post my results. I really like the product so I hope they come through. It was high 300's, dont remember exactly. There is no way I will be sending 400 on a new bulb every 3-4 months. I will be talking to the manager tomorrow morning and if he is unwilling to help I will keep going up the ladder until they do what's right. I have been down this road a few times with other manufactures and have almost gone to court one time, but they usually smarten up and do whats right.

What is this v2 HD72, does it have a manufacturing date on it.

There are only two firmware versions for this projector, according to Optoma.

V1, which has the reset problem
V2, which does not.

The way you can tell is by looking at the projection style icon in the menu. If you change the projection style to ceiling mount, and the icon in the menu still shows the front projection floor mount icon, you have V1. If it correctly shows the ceiling mount icon, you have V2.

I thought I was losing my mind when I had to change the bulb for the 2nd time just after 900hrs of use. Has anyone gotten a firm response from Optoma on this other than "bad bulb or bad lamp ignitor" Anyone puting together a class action suit on these guys because I definately want in.

well i talked with the manager of service canada. and still no head way. new bulb is 398$
I really don't want to spend another 400 for the projector to run another 4 months. I may just cut my losses and buy a panasonic. If anyone is interested in a HD72 without a bulb let me know...

Resetting the lamp hours is a manual operation in the menu. As far as I know.

After finding this forum thread I decided to cut my losses as well. I installed an Epson 1080 UB last night.

For anyone reading this considering an HD72 I strongly urge you to spend your money elsewhere.

That sucks! I wonder why some people have been successful in talking with Optoma managers (U.S.A.?) and you weren't.

What was his/her name?

Do you know if they have bulbs in stock?

well he said he would give me a deal on a bulb and replace the ballast (i had to ask for this), but that is not good enough for me. . i got just over 500 hours on my bulb. are there any bigbox stores that carry HD72's

According to FedEx, my PJ arrived @ OptomaUSA today. Optoma's RMA tracking does not show it rec'd yet.
I'm so curious to see what they say. My RMA on their site says,"Light shuts off after approx 30 seconds. Could be lamp driver". That was not a copy / paste of what I entered on the request for RMA.

I'm glad I found this forum and this thread. It makes for good documentation of my personal experience as well as everyone else's.

Well, I called support (Mike B) and referenced my previous RMA. He said normally they offer a discounted bulb only in the first year but I was just barely over that (at about 13-14 months). They offered $315.

I went ahead and did it. I don't want to spend on a new 720p DLP only to have it also end up with a dud bulb, and 1080p is still too pricey for me. I just hope this one lasts longer than a 14 months.

Optoma rec'd my PJ on Thursday, 1-17-08. I know this because of FedEx tracking. As of today, the RMA status on their site doesn't show it being rec'd.
I called and they were open, despite this being the MLK federal holiday. There is no record yet according to the tech I spoke with. I was told originally that it would be shipped back to me after 3-5 business days. This is day #2 and they don't even know if they have it yet. Fortunately, I insured it for 2k when I shipped it. I will post again.

The last time I sent mine in I had it back and it didn't show up on the RMA tracking site at all. Another thing I didn't like about Optoma. Why insure for $2k? Hoping it would get lost??

This is very interesting. I'm not trying to defend Optoma but in my base with this problem (lamp shut off after a few seconds) they acknowledged they knew about the problem and (knock on wood) my PJ has been fine since with the same bulb.

I spoke with Optoma yesterday. The tech told me they were working on my PJ.
Again, I informed him that I had done some research, and, according to what I've read, there seems to be a problem with the lamp drivers on these units. He said that there is a problem with the lamp drivers on about 1% of the PJ's. I would venture to guess that those of us here that are having this problem constitute far less than 1% of the total sales for these PJ's.
I am still waiting for the phone call to tell me it was a bad bulb. This is the 7th calendar day that they have had my PJ. It is the 5th business day. Originally, and subsequently, I was told it would be repaired and returned to me within 3-5 business days. Yesterday, I was told that when the repairs were complete, the PJ would be overnighted back to me.
