What about "stream ripped DVD's"? Is it possible? Can i use the full DVD functionality?

I have not, unfortunately, the PS3 , so i can not test it by own.

Can anyone test it. PLEASE

What's that got to do with having divx support? It cost them nothing to add it and takes nothing away from their revenue stream. By supporting it, they would probably sell more PS3s.

Agreed you must see in person! That and my digital camera sucks. Hah, either way I am very happy and pleased with this firmware update. Fixed two things that were an annonce to me which were no upscaling and texture smoothing and the HDCP handshake issue with my westinghouse. Thank you Sony!

I think the idea is that Divx is largely used for "ripped" DVDs and stolen properties. As such, sony, who makes movies, may not want to support it. I'm not sure if I agree w/ it, but I think thats the idea.

No. There's no way to navigate the dvd's menu and some of the .vob files wouldn't play.

Thank you Sony....

I can finally play FF12 and enjoy the details instead of jaggies!

You're probably right. That's MS's position on divx as well. Unfortunately for us, and for them, 98% of tv shows on the internet use some form of divx encoding. It's not going away anytime soon.

What a shame!

Thank you. Rhys

eh... actually they probably would need to work out a licensing deal with DivX which may very well cost them $$$.

I think it's more likely that they'd allow a DivX license download or something.

Otherwise, happy transcoding-on-the-fly

I think we're all in the same boat in having a LOT of DivX content. This media server stuff is really only good for pics and music for now IMO

Anyone getting DLNA to work from WMP 10 ? For some reason I thought 11 was a bit bloaty at initial release so I never upgraded. I downloaded it but am hesitant to install if it can be done within WMP 10.
You could try just setting up a home network in My Network Places first.

Every $40 DVD player at WalMart supports DivX now. So I can't imagine that Sony has anything to lose by adding support for older MPEG4 variants such as Xvid and Divx. If anything, the MPEG4 AVC codec is the most pirate friendly codec ever made and Sony already supports this. People say the Usenet groups are already moving to AVC so what is the harm in ASP?

Okay I was totally mad when I D/L Mortal Kombat 2 and saw that the jaggines was present even dough it was a "1080P" edition, it look exacly like the PS2 greatest hits disc

But rejoice! hold and be hold the PS2 version now looks like I expected the 1080p version to look

PS2 upscaled:

1080p online:

My camera sucks but you can see that the jaggines is gone, and it look way better now in my plasma than the online version

Now if I could only bring all of you guys to play with me @ home

I am fairly sure that only WMP 11 has the DLNA/uPnP server built in. But you might have the Windows Media Connect app available to install. It is the server before it was integrated into WMP & Vista. I think when WMP 11 came out they removed WMC from Windows Update but others would likely know for sure.

I just checked out Mortal Kombat 2 also and it looks better now. All I can ask for now is upscale the PS3 games to 1080p or get the software companies to comply with better standards. Of course dts-MA would be nice before my new Onkyo 805 gets here. It's not a big deal, but more music visuals would be great and custom wallpaper.

I have one setup, but I suspect DLNA is using a different protocol to share files.

I couldn't resist and installed WMP 11, think that did the trick. Looks like there is an entire thread dedicated to DLNA so I'll pop in over there to see if there are better alternatives.

I think you're right on both counts. I broke down and installed WMP11 and its doing its thing. Suspect I could have made it work with WMP10 but couldn't resist the "easy" way.

Heading over to the DLNA thread to see what the alternatives are. Thanks for the input.

im somewhat impressed. i honestly cant tell any diff between off/normal/full screen upconverting. double definately looks better, but it places a border around the entire image. even though it helps, hd-dvd blows it out the water (used a combo disk of you me and dupree). this is my 1st upconverting player so looks like its still hd/bd for me in that regards.

media streaming is still severely lacking. the interface is just too cluttered. it doesnt seem to be using id3 tags very well, and it doesn't place the songs in any real order as far as i can tell. you can't play full albums yet, and once you go back to the xmb, the music. stops. you cant do the cool slideshow like if the imgs are on the ps3 hard drive (but thats not that big of deal). lastly most my vids are in a unsupported format, but thats not sony's fault honestly.

for dvd playback ps3>360
for media playback 360>ps3

sony still has a ways to go, but .81, .82, .83, etc hopefully will fix some of these issues. they're getting there...

ima try some ps1/ps2 games later and see whats really good

handshaking issue now?

just updated to 1.8 and decided to try out gta:san andreas for the ps2. definite improvement with the upscale. but now, there seems to be handshaking issues with split-sceond intermittent static cutting in & out that was never there before.

ps3 is connected via hdmi and my tv is a 32" viewsonic n3251. i'm hoping there is some setting i can mess with that can fix this, otherwise, it will be too difficult to play. i will need to try another game and see if this still occurs also. anyone else experience this?

you can browse and do a slideshow with both Streamed Pictures and music, i just did it. Press Select and the XBM pop, scroll to Picture and start a Slideshow..

You can also copy from MP11, a thing witch the 360 can't do

*On the topic of the RGB Full Range vs. Limited Range*

I just found out that when I go into watch a DVD it reverts back to limited...If I got back into the menu after going to a DVD the colors are all back to the grey color...The menu still shows it as Full Range, but I actually have to switch it back to limited, and then back to Full Range to get it to go back...Does this happen to you also? (When you first start the movie, you can see the screen flick from its Full Range black to the Limited Range black/grey, at least I can)

If I Play a game it will stay at Full Range, which is great...but it changes it in DVD mode.

Yup, I'm seeing this as well. It reverts back to limited when playing BD/DVD, PS1/2 games, and even just turning off the console and back on. Makes the setting practically useless. I hope they fix this bug in the next update.

Otherwise, the other features in this update have been great.

How do you see that it has gone back to Limited during play? I also see the screen flicks from black to grey, but when I go back to the Display meny, the RGB is still on Full Range.

Please explain...

I can see the difference when I go back into menu...the background has a grey color...When I first change it back to Full Range, it goes to a dark black. Then when it switches back you can see that it is a Light grey.

This is on a Westy 37w3...I am sure it is different on different TV's.

I have a LG M4200C monitor DVI w hdcp. 1360x768. Connected through Yamaha rx-v1700 using hdmi -> DVI.

I have been using 1080p until now. Now i understand that its better to remove 1080i and 1080p from the hdmi support.

So I should check everything except 1080i and 1080p under hdmi right?
Shall i only leave 720p as supported? Or should i also leave the lower resolutions like 576p enabled?

What should i set for DVD upscaling?

And should i sett the full range RGB on?

Ok, I see it now. But only in the meny. Does this mean, that when I select Full Range and go straight to playback movie, the Full Range is on? Am I right?

And what should I select? should I go with RGB output for SD DVD and Ybr...output when playing BD?

No matter what I have tried, everytime I go back to play a movie the Full Range goes back to limited.

I don't know if that would get by it...you can try. If you aren't noticing a difference, why would you go through the trouble though?
