PS3 Firmware 1.8 Update Master Discussion Thread; POST ALL 1.8 COMMENTS HERE - Page 5

Thanks you guys! Really appreciate the help.

Just came back from a friend who has a 1080p tv and we tried it on his and we encountered No Video but Yes to audio.

I am now going offline to check out the double beep on the power button. Thanks again. Will update as soon as possible.

PS: Shocking customer service for sony in New Zealand.

This applies as well to others who have said their displays support 1080/24p: how do you know this? Does your display have an info function that says it is accepting & DISPLAYING 1080/24p? I ask because very few displays actually support this and mostly only ones released in the last 9 months. I personally know of two: the Sony Pearl projector and the Pioneer PRO-FHD1 plasma. There are no doubt others but I don't have personal knowledge of them. If you are basing your assertion on the fact that you get an image from the PS3, note that the setting is either "AUTOMATIC" or "OFF." In AUTO the PS3 will detect that your display doesn't handle 24p and will revert to 60i. Displays may have no indication as to whether they are accepting 24p or 60i. The Pioneer PRO-FHD1 certainly does not. The Sony Pearl may. To detect the difference by eye may be subtle: some people are more sensitive to 3:2 judder than others. It is best detected in movie end credits or long slow pans like the opening of STAR TREK INSURRECTION.

The AE900 does indeed accept a 1080/24p signal and scale it to 720/24p...I can confirm this is the case passing 1080p/24 via PS3 through Denon 2807 to the PJ--under picture settings it displays 1080/24p as the resolution being displayed (which of course is scaled to the PJ's native res) but WOW is the image sharp and detailed at this resolution, and I for one truly believe the jutter is gone sending the PJ this resolution!

As a caveat...to do this on the 900, one needs to set 1080/24p to auto in the PS3 menus, and uncheck 1080p and 1080i resolutions when doing a custom display setup in the PS3 menus...otherwise the 900 thinks you are sending it a 1080/60p, which it definitely does NOT accept...

Oops, my mistake. It was a typo that got cut and pasted. Trying to multitask too many things is my humble excuse. I have edited the above statements to say 60p not 60i. My major point is that with HDMI handshaking, when the PS3 is set to AUTO it will put out what it detects your display can accept.

My PS3 was working fine. I upgraded to the 1.8 firmware and now it won't power up. I just get 3 beeps and the red LED light keeps blinking. I've tried unplugging it, hard shut down with the power switch in the back of the unit as well and nothing. Never had any problems until this upgrade.

Has anyone been able to download 1.8 to their PC? A friend of mine has a PS3 that isn't connected to the Internet. I need to put this upgrade onto my flash drive for him, but I'm getting a 404 Not Found error when I click on the download link from Sony's update page.

The link on this page works.

Any idea?

I get the same thing. What I think is the problem is that the Marantz does not support DST compression, which is used for everything except older stereo releases. Even if you can pass DSD, most devices that support DSD do not support DST.

Have you shut it down (switch on back), power back up and then hold the front button down until you hear the 2nd beep then release??

I'm also using the AE900 with 1080/24p. Looks excellent. However, I didn't really change the settings much after the update. Switched to RGB, mode full, super white on, and 1080/24Hz set to automatic. Under display resolutions, 480p, 720p and 1080i are selected. Should I set this to something else? Chris' instructions in this thread are a tad different than my settings.

Great, that's what I was hoping was the case. I wanted to make sure it wasn't some odd setting.

Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks. Even after being told that there was a download link on that page, it took me 5 minutes to find it.

In comparing the URL's of the two download links, it appears that the one on the "Update Using a PC" page that I was looking at still points to version 1.60, which must have been removed from the server.

Firmware 1.8 did NOT give the PS3 the ability to pass DSD through HDMI. It only added bitmapping (ie. noise reduction) for SACD. The PS3 is still sending PCM to your receiver over HDMI.

Weird... my PS3 lets me set video to HDMI and audio to optical. It's actualy my 360 that drives me nuts; it sends audio over both, so I have to turn the TV down every time I want to use the 360.

Why do you have to go through all that? just scroll to update on the PS3 and it will find the website and download the latest update automatic for you.

I also have been waiting for audio being able to output simultaneously thru hdmi and optical..I hope the ps3 can achieve this with a firmware update. Does anyone know if it can be done with the ps3's current hardware?
I don't know if anyone had noticed yet, but I tried the Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time Blu-Ray disc and it now correctly outputs at 1080p on my Mits WD-57732 where as before it was only 1080i. I would assume this is because of the 1080p24 settings. Kudos to Sony, this is a great update all around.

Same. I also don't have an HDMI receiver and use optical for sound.

Alright I checked my .ts files that I had changed the extension to .mpg and they worked fine under the new firmware. Remember that they need to be less than 4GB.

I am testing same setup tomorrow. From what I have read the 1080p is noticably better on 720p only projectors (no 1080p24 input ones like the Benq) Per the manual either should give you the best resolution. Seems that the processing end (projector vs PS3 may make a difference).

I'll report when I get a chance. Anyone have a recommendation for a test disc - I have Casino Royale or The Departed?

One more issue:
I am finally - it seems going to move the Denon 2910 to the bedroom. Thank you Sony.

Has any body had problems playing bluray movies after the update? Ever since I updated I can no longer watch bluray movies. I hear the sound but my TV cannot establish a connection. It seems like my PS3 does not want to output 1080p over a bluray disc. DVD upscaled or downloaded trailers are fine at 1080p but as soon as I put a bluray movie in my TV can not get a signal. I tried resetting to default, restarting, and unplugging the cable. Also when I tried NBA 2k7 which is 1080p, it only plays it in 720p. Any body have any suggestions? I am pissed!!!!

I am sure 48hz output shouldnt be so difficult. I believe some projectors can't accept a 24hz signal, but can accept at 48hz signal. The optoma hd70 owners manual states it accepts 43hz signals and up. If ps3 can output 1080p60hz and 1080p24hz why not 1080p48hz?

You might need to turn off the 1080p/24hz - some 1080p tv cannot handle that signal and post 1.8 update the default was to turn this on for 1080p users.

Spent about an hour on the phone with Sony tech support today.

After updating my PS3 to firmware 1.80. I can not start up the box with the 1080p setting saved. If I do, no HDMI signal is present- so I get a blank screen, while sound continues as normal. I then have to do the HDMI/video mode hard reset to get a picture back, and then re-save display settings.

I can select 1080p and see an image, but it won't work on start up. Also the "Automatic" HDMI resolution scanning method kicks out the image when 1080p is selected and I have to hit back a couple times to regain an image.

I'm connected to a Epson Home Cinema 1080 projector, and the picture is stunning when it works. Anyone else having a problem?

Sony offered to swap out my unit, but they don't know if it would actually fix the problem, it was the only thing the CSR could think to do, after every attempt to get the box to start in 1080p failed. It's a bummer because the the box started in 1080p fine yesterday before the update.

I.

Marantz VP12-S4. Doesn't take 1080p24.

The issue is that it accepts 108024p through HDMI, but not 1080p60. So on, I can't select 1080p as output res in the screen config menu.

I leave the 1080p24 option as "auto" in the bd menu.

But it doesn't work. Always outputs 1080i or 720p depending on the screen res selected.

Any clue about it?

cheers

I guess 48p or 48i output is quite niche - whereas 24p is a new mainstream standard being supported by a lot of upcoming flat panel displays (including those from Sony)

Do Sony market a display with 48i or 48p connectivity? If they did I'm sure it would be present...

I was about to update my PS3. Now I can wait. Although I don't use 1080p.

Hi,

Mine is showing in the menu 1125/60 with 1080i and 760/60 with 720p?

Kind regards.

I am having the same issue with the Panny AE900. It will not take 1080P and I am getting 1080i/60 on the first Pirates movie. I have set 1080/24 to automatic. Any suggestions.

Was Pirates made in 1080/24?
