HP PL4272N & PL5072N First Impressions?

PL4272N & PL5072N Overview/Specs

Don't think I'll be going plasma myself, but I'm sort of glad to see HP is staying in the game. There were several things I rather liked (and a few I didn't, such as 1xHDMI) about the PL4260N, so I was somewhat curious to hear impressions of these new '07 units. Looks like HP has made a few nice changes spec-wise, including integrated hidden speakers, piano black bezel, and 3xHDMI w/1080p support. Doesn't look like they're including the MediaSmart features so far though, as on last year's SLC3760N LCD.

Also wondered what panels they're using this time (LG again?), and whether the bit-depth on the panel is any higher.

I saw the 50" at bestbuy and man it looked GOOD! really caught the eye, the bezel is super thin and has a pretty nice gloss to it, mimics the pioneer look very well.

The picture quality was meh, but it was off in its own little area and im sure they calibrated it wrong.

Tks for the reply gotchaforce. Finally got a (brief) look at both the 42" and 50" models, and my reaction was similar. Not a bad lookin frame, but a bit underwhelmed so far by the new HP's picture. Detail seemed pretty lacking in the default Vivid picture mode (especially alongside the latest Panasonics, Pioneers, Hitachis and 1080p LCDs). It looks like the Sharpness control has been tweaked to produce a softer, less gritty appearance at medium to high settings than last year's model (maybe to help with SD content?). Don't really like the new effect myself. It doesn't seem as is they've added any new picture controls either. Looks like just the basic Contrast, Brightness, Color, Hue, Sharpness and Temp settings.

With more optimal adjustments (ie lower Sharpness, etc.), I'm pretty sure these can look a bit better, but I guess the question is how much? And would it be enough to contend with the likes of Panasonic and Pioneer (...or Maxent and LG, for that matter), now that some of their models are dipping to a closer neighborhood $$-wise? Or will folks just see a flashy new frame, slightly lower pricetag, and not even pay the PQ much heed?

Saw it at Costco and wanted to buy it to try it with HTPC... It looked awful. I even tried adjusting it with the remote, but this thing just had no depth. Bad black levels vs anything near it. It also seemed to potentially have more motion blur than other sets.

I know its hard to judge things in the store, but it was enough to make me not take one home to try.
