HL-T7288W...First impressions - Page 5

I think most of us are confused about the true capabilities of this TV because Samsung's marketing needs work. For instance, I've found only one reference to the TV supporting HDMI 1.3's Deep Color, and that was buried on the "features" page of the website - it's not mentioned in the brochure nor in the manual. Similarly, with regard to the xvyCC color spacing supported by HDMI 1.3, I was able to confirm the TV has it only by searching for that term in the manual - there was no reference to it anywhere on Samsung's website or on the brochure. I don't understand why Samsung would not advertise these features, like other manufacturers.

Obscurity in documentation seems to be endemic in the electronics industry. Good technical writers are hard to come by.

I had no idea what xvyCC blah blah meant, and it wasn't explained in the TV's manual, nor the receiver's. All the manuals do is explain how to select an option; very rarely is there an explanation of what the options mean or what they do so that the consumer can make an informed choice. The same was true of the PS3 settings-- none are explained in any written documentation provided with the product. They expect you to go online and find the "user's guide" there, where there is at least a modicum of information provided.

Anyhow, thanks to everyone for helping with my issues.

I use a Harmony 659 and my friend came over on Saturday and we got everything set up and working great using the profile for a Samsung HL-S5688W and tweaking from there. Try that and see how it works. You have to go into "Device" and then scroll through the screens and play around with the inputs until you find out which buttons select the proper inputs, then make sure to use those for your activity profiles. Works fantastic now.

That stand is looking is pretty nice, I was going to ask though, have you tried putting your speakers a bit farther away from the TV? You would probably get better stereo imaging that way

How do you like the stand you got? i wasn't thrilled with it because I use the stand to put my center channel and didn't like that there is that bar in the middle, it prevents me from putting the center channel directly under the middle of the TV

Recieved my HL-T7288W this weekend and absolutely love it! I have a BDI 8529 coming friday hopefully so ill get some pics for everyone

I like the stand, personally. It looks good and supports the tv well. It's big enough to put all my components. While the middle bar does prevent me also placing the center speaker, I was going to put the center on shelf over the tv.

Well, I got my set in yesterday and I think it's defective It's hard to explain but there's a circle that's about 1 inch in diameter on the right part of the screen, about 4 inches from the right edge and about 8 inches from the bottom. It's pretty faint, although it's definitely noticeable especially when watching something really bright or white, like snow. It seems to occur only in HDMI, and I tried switching cables, using different slots, etc., and can't make the problem go away. I was praying I would not get a defective set, and it looks like I did anyway.
man oh man.. I went into BB today and they have this set on sale. It had a nice bright picture. They didn't have the Mits 73833 on display for me to compare it to yet.

Is it going to come down to a coin flip? :-)
Although the tech initially said they couldn't replace the screen they called back and we scheduled the replacement. They came yesterday (2 techs) and did the switch in about an hour. Result; the new screen has a faint scratch about 2" long in the upper right hand corner. They're going to go back and order another screen.
After the screen replacement I adjusted the color using Avical's DVE User-Level Video Calibration Tutorial. The instructions say to disable CCA in the service menu but I don't know how to do that. I went ahead anyway, and as before the reds tend to be a little too dark (more of a blood red). Is a ISF cal the only solution?

On another note, I've had several occasions when the TV didn't turn on immediately, maybe about a ten second delay, with the screen flashing different colors right before it displays the picture. Is that cause for concern?

I have the BDI 8529 and I love it, the center channel drawer is smaller than my center speaker but I can make it work.

Is there a calibration thread for the 7288w on here I have not seen any???
I just updated my Toshiba HD-DVD HD-XA2 so that it will dispaly 1080P/24 Hz. I've played several different disks but the Samsung always says it's displaying 1080@60 Hz. I thought this TV would display it at 120 Hz. (5 X 24 = 120). Bad assumption on my part?
I see the same thing, would like to know as well.

This tv doesn't do 120 Hz only 60

Boomer8800:

Part of my purchase decision was the discussion in this thread about 120 Hz capability (see attached), or more correctly, the ability to display 24fps judder free.

Did I miss read this or is it just wrong? One of the posts includes a screen shot showing the sammy info display of 1080/24 operation. (post #100, a reply between you and jnelson2000).

I called samsung and asked a level 2 tech whether the set is 120 Hz capable, she told me no, only their new LCD lines. I'm disappointed.

Here are my setting that Dave Abrams set my tv to after isf calibration.

Standard Mode
Cool1
Bright 45
Contrast 98
Color 50
Tint 50/50
Sharp 50

DNR and dnie off
auto scan

Before readings had a 10830 Kelvin after readings had a 6605 across the IRE spectrum

Thread Starter
I asked my contact about 3:2 pulldown on the 7288 DLP. His response is as follows:

"3-2 can still be necessary for 120 Hz, depending on how it’s handled. To my knowledge, the TVs run at 120 Hz, but only duplicate the 60 Hz signal. I’ve asked the DLP guys for clarification. Our LCD runs at 120 Hz, and uses both 3-2 pulldown and frame/motion interpolation, not frame duplication."

So this confirms what samsung has said before, which is that the 120Hz is got gaming. It takes a dedicated 60Hz signal and spits it into two streams (one for left and one for right).

Of course 120Hz won't be any benifit now becasue there are zero 120Hz sources.

And yes, this display does accept 24frame. However, the Toshiba HD-DVD implementation is flawed and my set won't lock onto 24frame. Toshiba is not forcing the signal. They are going off of the EDID response from the set.

Thanks for the settings. I was surprised on the sharpness but I tried them out and much to my surprise they look great.

Does anyone have any fuzzyiness on some darker scenes? Mine is sharp but has a little but of fuzzyiness on some scenes. I've wondered if the TV was defective or is that just normal.

Thanks Mike
I just tried boomer8800's settings and what a difference! I had been very unhappy with color accuracy of the set (darker reds in particular), and now I'm finally happy with the TV. Thanks for your post boomer8800. I did make some minor adustments though. I thought the set was too bright so I turned contrast down to 90 and when I ran a Avia video test I adjusted tint to G45/R55. I assume David made some internal adjustments that may account for those differences.

How do you like that stand ?
Is there anything you don't like about it ?

I have the CFV69 (your stand) and the WFV66.
I'm not sure which to assemble and use for the HL-T7288W.

Beautiful match I would agree and one would be hard pressed to find a better match than these photo's present. Excellent!

As to some folks earlier that seem to be confusing 120Hz and 24fps - they are two different things. Folded within virtually every movie and broadcast master is a perfect 1080/24P and devices that can display it with 24fps will bring out the best PQ match with the Master - 120Hz is a featureset that many panels are now adding to the processing to assist in providing smoother motion.

Having both may benefit but reviewing the 120Hz panels feedback seem to be a mixed bagged result so far that seems selective use and personal viewing preference depends on source and whether they like the result or not. I would guess next gen panels will all have it and JVC has also demo'd 180Hz in their future LCD's.

Just fired this guy up a few days ago. Very clean, very crisp, great detail. It has a tendency to be too contrasty but this can be lowered to individual satisfaction. When football is on in HD even the smallest players from far away are clean in detail. This to me is a sign of the set's quality, and or, the benefit of the increased 1080P detail.
I have the 7288W but the film mode is not accessible from HDMI or Component inputs. If you can't turn on the film mode in the menu how is the set to do 3:2 pulldown and how can it even detect film when the mode is off?

Ok all - my head is swimming after reviewing websites, review sites, selling sites w/customer feedback, supplier spec-sheets and I'm on the fence between the WD-73833 and Sammy's HL-T7288W. WHY does Mitsi NOT have the owners manual available to download for either of their XX833 models? I'm nervous after reading a review on the 73833 and that they wobulate to get 1080p. On the Sammy-side their TV only outputs 2.1 sound when using HDMI input. SO - DOES the xx833 output in 5.1 and/7.1 in sound when input is HDMI??? Anyone else have any information to help me make a decision? Regarding Sammy's bowing etc problems I have not discovered/read much problems w/the 7288W (unlike the XXX87S series). Looking at Mitzi's XX732 and XX733 series I want to get some 'feature proof' items even if they may not come to fruition such as 3D, 120Hz, 1.3HDMI, Firewire (only on Mitzi), and USB. I have a Denon 2808CI receiver, TiVoHD, PS3, and HD-A2 (thank you Wal-Mart for 2 of them @$99 each). I'm posting this here and probably in another Thread to (hopefully) get some unbiased (if possible) feedback. Mucho appreciato ...
