Toshiba HD-A2 is #1 at Amazon

The A2 is currently ranked #1 among all DVD players (the OPPO has finally been knocked from its pedestal, even if only temporarily).

(Is this worthy of its own thread? One might ask, but I just thought this was too cool to pass up.)

Edit: the A2 is still #1, but it is now also #14 among all electronics!

Edit again: It's now at #10 among all electronics!

Edit yet again: It's now at #2 among all electronics, having briefly occupied the #1 spot! (It now sits at #2, second to a webcam and headset that is effectively free ($25 with a $25 rebate) -- so that's not bad for $200+ player).

Edit - June 2: After falling briefly, the A2 has returned to the #1 spot among all DVD players.

Edit - June 10: After spending several days at #1, the A2 dropped for most of a day down to #2. But it has now returned to #1.

get them down to $199 and i bet it will stay like that most of the time....

most people like myself dont care much about the 5 movies since their mail in.

make it $199 with in store 2 free movies and it will sell more then $250-299 and 5 free movies that you need to mail in and wait for god knows when to get them.

Nice, now if the software sales can get to number one #1 like that well be set.
Software should follow! I wonder if we'll ever see a blu ray player at #1 anytime soon...
Wow, HD DVD has the # 1 spot for both players and software (HD-A2 and Planet Earth). Very nice!

Wunderbar........

Remember guys, here in Europe we still pay about $ 7-800,- for the very same player (HD-E1) without any discs at all.

Anybody knows, how many players they plan to sell, during this campaign.??

They have finally arrived down here. They are more expensive than the PS3 which is a shame. I almost got one today, but couldn't justify $1399.
My amp doesn't have HDMI and i needed 5.1 Analog outputs. I think i will have to wait for the HD-EX1 to arrive.

I am like many others (I assume)--I love my machine, but am majorly pissed about my five movies not arriving yet (and it's not like you got to pick ANY five, just five from a selected list of 15!

I don't understand why you guys keep making posts like this. Didn't you hear, the war is over. Blu-Ray won. :P

NOT

The longer the battle goes on the more consumers who own or wish to buy both will benefit. I have a PS3 and assuming my CC matrix order ever ships I'll be buying a HD-DVD player in the near future.
The A2 is now 278.00 at Amazon... I just requested my price adjustment for the 30 day guarantee. What a great deal at that price.

Yep........... HD DVD #1

RIP Blu-Ray DVD

Since HD DVD is region free, why can't you order it from Amazon.com (US Version) and get it shipped in? Wouldn't it be way cheaper (even with Tariffs/Duties)?

Well, two things.

1) I don't know about other countries, but Amazon.com won't ship the HD-A2 to Canada.

2) It's region free for HD DVD, but it's not region free for DVD.

Great news for optical high definition media!

How does this work?
Wheni got mine it was 296.00 but when they shipped it the split my order and priced the a2 @ 262.00 and the hddvd movies at 114.00. Which looking at it they gave me the player cheeper and the charged me full price for the movies eeven though i was suppose to get 2 of them free.

it's the # selling player on amazon, when it's the same at best buy, circuit city and costco, then we're cooking. until then the ps3 is still outselling it by a ton, though i agree with the question of movie usage for ps3 owners.

Thats not true. Last Week Saturn in Berlin (kind of chain simmilar to CC or BB) had them for 299,- Euro which is around $400,- And the price was inkluding sales tax.

So you can get a cheap HD-DVD player here in germany.

OPPO should take notice. Granted, their upconverters are still selling well for now. But It will be harder and harder to sell the premium upconvert DVD player for $229 while Toshiba HD A2 can be bought for $243 (Electronics Expo through Amazon) or D2 for $249 at Costco and Sam's. They need to adapt their strategy from premium upconvert DVD player to mid-range Hi Def players. Hopefully a HD DVD player from OPPO soon.

OK i figured it out. it is down to 248.oo they matched it. Thanks for the heads up..

Toshiba is definitely in this thing to win it. It's still very questionable if they can beat the jugernaut named PS3 though.

The next thing that needs to happen is new disc pricing. HD DVD can't win on the back of $40 combo discs.

You forgot Wal-Mart! With them and Costco together, you can forget about BB and CC.
Another first...

For the first time Amazon is having to ship out more HD-A2 players than any other DVD player.

Looks like this price is the sweet spot Now only if Microsoft can lower the price of the 360 HD DVD player to $149.
Something's gotta be wrong!!

The BDA says HD DVD is dead!!
Dead, I tell ya, DEAD!!!

I mean...I'ts gotta be a typo...it's gotta say Sony BD player...
Amazon is not trustworthy!!!

I will probably end up buying the HD A2 from Robert.

All the Best
the upconverting on the playstation 3 has left me completely split right now... I'd love a great game console and need an upconverting player but there's no good games for the PS3 to justify the $600 price tag, and I still don't want to pay more then $250 for an A-2.

My price points are $450 for a playstation 3 or $250 for a Toshiba A-2. The first one that gets there (including shipping and tax) wins. The next one will win whenever they hit their price point minus say 100 bucks.

Competition is great, it really is. Means lower prices and better products for all of us.

Hi, stockwiz. I think the A2 is currently available through one of Amazon's other sellers for about $243.00. (I don't know about shipping and tax, though. Still, it might be worth a look for you.) Good luck with your choice!
The A2 is currently #35 in ALL of electronics

Sure it is the best selling DVD player, but #35 in ALL of electronics is just as impressive because it is up against memory cards, iPods, Digital Cameras, Wireless Routers, GPS Navigators, Noise Canceling ear phone, etc

Not bad for a "dead" format

#35 in Electronics... a mere 734 places higher than the best selling Blu-Ray player which is the 2nd Gen Samsung which is ranked #769
