Do the 8500GT, 8600GT, and 8600GTS really work?

I'm looking for smoother playback in my HD DVD movies. My system is decent - E6600 with 2GB of ram, and currently a 6600GT video card. Using Power DVD and AnyDVD during playback. Is it worth it to get one of the new Nvidia's new cards or maybe wait till the silent ATI HD 2600 comes out. I'm curious what you guys with the new Nvidia cards think?

if your happy with the playback, why change now?

you can always get something better, cheaper, cooler running....in the future when what you have no longer works for you..

of course, if you gotta have....

The problem is that the playback is not perfectly smooth. There are slight stutters here and there. Maybe dropped frames?

Try Reclock (google it).

reclock is the key my friend

Is there a solution for this that works in Vista?

[edit] I guess lots of people will say to switch to XP, so I'll save them the time.

I tend to disagree with the advice given so far in this thread. I've been trying to achieve perfectly smooth HD playback for more than 3 years with numerous cards and software. The first perfect result ever that I got was with the Nvidia 8500GT under Vista 32 bit. Reclock is good for nothing, IMO. Or maybe just for other types of stuttering problems that only others might have had and I haven't.
So I am categorically saying - yes, the 8500/8600 really work, at least with the current Vista drivers. I also have a system with E6600 and 2GB RAM, and the 8500GT replaced a 7950GT. If I were you, I wouldn't wait for anything else, this card/driver combination doesn't ever drop a single frame with any kind of hi-def content, including HD DVD and BD.

Thanks Ditcho. I just got a 8800GTS 640MB card for a gaming PC I'm building and decided to pop it in my daily driver to check fan noise and to see if it made any difference with HD DVD playback. The PC I tested it on is an AMD X2 3800+, 2GB of ram, and a 7800GT 256MB. I had tried playing HD DVD content from the hard drive with the 7800GT but got about the same amount of stuttering as my HTPC. So tonight I popped in the 8800GTS and like magic the stuttering is gone, playback is completely smooth and image quality has improved greatly. I'm using a 24" Dell LCD. Also the 8800GTS is actually quieter than my 7800GT. I was so pleased that I placed an order for the Gigabyte 8600GTS fanless video card which will go into my HTPC.

Amen brother. Perfect playback, no dropped frames, buy one now. :P

@ditcho

I'm using the exact same system setup (E6600 / 8600GT) as you but do have problems with slight stuttering under vista 32 + PowerDVD 7.3 .
Using the latest 158.43 drivers the HD video does in some way accelerate / decelerate when you see pannings.

It's not really a stuttering/judder....any idea?

With the newest PowerDVD Patch the diashow from before went away and i got a much smoother picture with nice pannings now...except from the prob above.

Ah...just forgot to mention that I play the HD-DVD's via a projector with 50Hz playback frequency....as for now it's not possible to get custom resolutions / frequencies working under vista...so 24p playback is not possible for now....maybe thats the clue then?

Thanks in advance,

Atlas

Maybe you have something running in the background causing the stuttering? I had an E6600, 2GB RAM, ATI 1950 Pro and did not experience any stuttering with the latest build of PowerDVD Ultra 7.3.
quick answer: YES it works ! (I have the 8600 GTS)

PERFECTLY smoooooth HD-DVD playback ....NO judders at all.....better than the Toshiba or the Xbox 360

@rajude

Could you name your system components and the software you're using.

Besides the standard software I only habe installed a virusscanner (avast) nd realvnc.
But I give it a try wether any background services/programs might cause these accelerated/decelerated pannings.....

Greetings

I have an Athlon 64 3500+, 1 GB PC 3200 RAM, vista 32 ultimate, evga 8600GT (256 MB) with guru3d's 160.03 drivers, PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra 2911 patch.

Smooth HD-DVD and Blu-Ray playback, no jidders.

My system is E6600, 2GB RAM, Vista 32 Bit Home Premium
Gigabyte 8500GT, 1280x720 @ 60 Hz DVI
Drivers 158.18, latest patched and repatched version of PowerDVD 7.3
As I mentioned, no dropped frames or any other HD content playback problems.

Has the latest version of PowerDVD fixed the subtitle always on issue??
I'm running a C2D with a 7950GT under XP and for the life of me no matter what I do can't get perfect 1080i playback as I'm always dropping some percentage of frames. I've attempted everything and the only thing that doesn't drop frames is using the overlay renderer the colors are seriously off.

I'm not prepared to upgrade to Vista, does anyone have success with the 8500/8600 under XP with 1080i MPEG-2 playback?

I think that problem was fixed with the first update months ago. Surely it's not present now.

While the 8500/Vista/PowerDvd combo appears to work really well, keep in mind it's reliant on those three pieces of software working correctly. Some of us are having real problems getting it to work reliably. The vast majority seem to be having no problems, but keep in mind it's not 100%, since it's not relying on just brute force system power to do playback .

Not sure if this was discussed earlier, but do the 8500/8600 boards resolve that horrible banding in PowerDVD that's present with the 7600/7900 series?

I actually never updated my player software until tonight. It's now working without the subtitles. I'm super happy now. Just got the fanless Gigabyte 8600 GTS card for my HTPC. Hope to install it this weekend.

Well the 8600 GTS card is going back to newegg. It did squat. It would freeze during HD DVD playback3 out of 4 times. And yes I did install the latest drivers from the Nvidia website. Not sure what the problem was but it's going back and I'm going to get myself a 320MB version of the 8800 GTS. At least I know that will work and the cooler is quiet. On a positive note my new gaming rig is together and pretty damn fast. Just have to brush off the overclocking rust. It's been a while since I overclocked a CPU but I'm hoping to get some good results. The new gaming rig is as follows:

Corsair 620 watt modular PSU
ASUS P5K Deluxe motherboard
Intel C2D E6600
4GB of Corsair DDR2 1066
WD Raptor X 150GB OS drive
WD 500GB data drive
EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB video card
Using the XBOX 360 HD DVD drive as the optical drive for now but will probably pickup a Blu Ray burner down the road.

The 8600 GTS worked for me--combined with "recode".

After stutter with a 7900 GTX that just wouldn't go away, I "upgraded".

Stutter is gone and playback is perfect! Now I'm waiting for an even more powerful version...

small note:
I was using a 7600GT in my E6600 rig and under MCE2005 the crawler line at the bottom of the Fox News Channel was always a bit jerky.... now, with an 8600GTS, the crawler is dead smooth.....

Do these cards improve HDTV viewing as well? I get slight juddering on 1080i content with my 7900gs on Vista 32. If I step up to an 8600GT can I expect smoother HDTV playback?

Yes, just how much depends largely on your CPU.
