HDMI or VGA (D-Sub) ?

Thread Starter
I have some questions about the output of my HTPC.

Now I'm using a video card that has two outputs, DVI and D-sub, one port (D-Sub) is connected to my computer monitor and another (DVI) is connected to my LCDTV (Sharp 32") via D-Sub (I use DVI to D-Sub converter provided with my VGA card).

Currently, I'm pretty satisfied with the result --image quality is very good and sharp, but I heard many people said that HDMI is superior to D-Sub, and if I can manage to send the signal through my TV HDMI port, I will get an even better picture.

This statement makes me wonder if I can really achieve a better image with the HDMI. Since my VGA doesn't have HDMI output, the only way to use HDMI is to use a convertor which will convert DVI to HDMI.

So I'd like to ask you guys whether it is possible that I will get a better result with HDMI ? (please take into account that I have to use DVI>HDMI adaptor).
I also know that if I opt to use HDMI, I cannot set the output resolution to 1360*768 which is the native resolution of my TV, but instead I have to use 12xx*xxx (can't remember the exact value), so my TV has to scale the picture to fill the screen.

As we all know that LCDTV will be at its best when it is used at its native resolution, I'm curious about the result of using HDMI, since the picture has to be scaled and the signal has to be converted from DVI port. I'm not sure if I can get a good result. On the other hand, when VGA cable is used, despite that it is analog signal, I can set the resolution to 1360*768 which is the native res of my TV, so the picture being displayed is at 1:1 pixel mapping.

Theoretically, using VGA cable should yield a better picture because the signal is sent directly without having to be converted and scaled

I know it's a lot easier to try it myself, but HDMI adapter and cable are pretty pricey here, plus my TV is pretty far from PC, when I buy a new cable it has to be 10M. For this reason, it will be a lot better to know which is better before I invest in the cable

Thanks

Image quality shouldn't be downgraded when using DVI-HDMI converter (benefits of having digital signal) and picture with DVI is better compared to VGA (how much -> quality of your VGA-output). I don't have first hand experience how much TV's scaling is going to affect quality (I'm using native 1280x720 screen).

BTW. if you're going to buy a 10m DVI/HDMI cable buy a quality one. Some people have been having problems with >5m low end cables. I'm using 10m DVI-HDMI Lindy's cable /w HDMI-DVI converter without any problems so far.

Thanks for your reply.

In the case of VGA cable, I'm planning to use Canare, costing me around 80$ (10M cable). But when it comes to HDMI, I can see no other choice, in term of quality, besides SPC which costs me around 158$ .

In my view, 80$ cable is acceptable but to pay 160$ for a cable is too much for me.
Because of this reason, I'd better be sure that I will get some noticeable improvement before I buy one.

pccables.com and monoprice.com both have excellent cables that work great and are CHEAP..highly recommend both. i got a 50 foot VGA cable that works great, and a dvi-hdmi cable that also is excellent.

PrTv,

Sadly, you'll probably have to try both ways and see for yourself because, as you've stated, VGA is 1:1 but HDMI will cause your display to scale. There is no telling what the quality of your VGA or Display is without seeing both.

Now, if both connections were 1:1, then the answer is simple: try HDMI (just know that while digital is superior to analog, you may not be able to discern a difference with your hardware when watching moving video at normal viewing distances).

PrTv,

You should consider how you use your LCDTV.

If you use it for traditional computer tasks, like email and web surfing, you will be disappointed with the HDMI connection because you will loose the 1:1 pixel mapping.

On the other hand, if you use the LCDTV mostly for watching full screen video from the computer, and sit far enough away that you can't discern individual pixels, you may not notice the loss of the 1:1 mapping.

My instincts say to stick with VGA if you like what you have now. Based on what you've said so far, I think HDMI will be a small improvement at best and is likely to be worse for your configuration.

FYI. I used a VGA connection with my 50" Pioneer plasma and it caused terrible tearing when video was being displayed. I moved to an HDMI connection and the problem went away.

Now I am anxiously waiting for Nvidia to provide some kind of overscan correction for their Vista drivers but it's not too bad.

I'm not sure what would have caused the tearing, maybe someone could enlighten me. Just wanted to throw that out there in case you notice that if you go with a VGA connection.

Odie77, what Pio plasma do you have and what kind of Video card were you using over the VGA connection? I have a PDP5070 and am about to order the components for my HTPC and would love any real world experience you can offer...

Staysafeonline,
The pio plasma is a PDP5070 just like yours and the video card I am using is an Asus 7600GT 256MB with HDMI. I don't remember the exact model number, but you can find it online. It is one of the few 7600GT cards that is HDCP capable, which is one of the reasons I went with it. If you are using VMC and decide to use the VGA input on your plasma, you may run into the same tearing I experienced so just beware of that. The video is good but it is a little bit on the noisy side when the fan is running full tilt. That's my only complaint, however.
