LEDDLP(Samsung) vs SXRD(Sony)

Anybody is able to compare side-by-side Samsung 61" (or 56") vs Sony 60" (or 55") from same source (BD or HDDVD)? Thanks.

Good question as I would like to know myself. I am about to buy a 60" 1080p rear projetion and am considering Samsung, Sony, Mitsu, and JVC.

The person I used to live with the past couple years has a 60XBR1 that I have grown used to since I watched it more than he did. And I know the XBR2 is out now and XBR(5?) is due. I will be buying any day now.

Are any of the new TVs going to look better than the SXRD using a PS3 for BluRay?

Yes I wanna know too. I've been looking at both TV's. The Samsung has 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Anyone know what the Sony SXRD is?

CR means nothing if it crushes blacks. The new Sammy 61/65 series crushes blacks meaning you lose shadow detail. The Sony SXRD has had problems i won't go in to but the SXRD is among the best displays out there as far as low black levels and excellent shadow detail. "Alien" looks awesome on the SXRD while on the LCD it looks like a big blob of tar.

I can not purchase today Samsung LEDDLP in Europe. I've seen only Sony SXRD rptv's in shop. Good picture. But DLP sets always have better blacks. Big advantage Samsung over Sony is RGB LED's with wider color gamut and more then 20.000 hour of work w/o degradation of light.
Sony SXRD has 3 panels (1920x1080) - possible problem with convergence (green blob?). LEDDLP with 1DMD (960x1080@120Hz = 1920x1080@60Hz) ready for 3D games and stereoscopic video...

I really had high hopes for the new Samsung LED DLPs, but after viewing the 61 inch version at several stores I am extremely disappointed. Really dull picture and horrible vertical viewing angle. Add to that, the inordinate number of reports on this forum of flimsy "warping" cabinets and smudged screens needing replacement and you have to start questioning build quality. I think these sets are still a work in progress.

I believe the Sony is rated at 10K:1 however, it has been lab tested and rated at around 14K:1 actually higher than it's spec rating. I would not agree that a DLP has "Better" blacks and to me Better is what presents shadow details working along side the Blacks to = HT WoW with an HD feed in it's sweet spot those detail levels places it ahead of all panels IMO in that comparison area.

As Lipcrkr stated it has the ability to expose details in dark scenes that other panels leave flat no matter how deep the blacks the steps of gray in contrast the SXRD does is best of class for HT viewing IMO - the magic and popularity is that the level of details can illicit involuntary wow's from HD material you may have watched on other panels with no such reaction. Understand full well SD material I found troubling on the SXRD but HD material and especially dark scenes can blow you away with it's strength in exposing them to the viewer's delight!

It takes an otherwise stagnant scene and brings it to life. Not trashing the Samsung at all and I do like them very much but anytime I've compared over the last few years I found the SXRD a hair better with it's scene details - JMO though it did seem to need an HQV VP for SD material it's weakness IMO.

Thank you very much for opinion. I agree, "shadow details" is important as "better blacks".

In stores we always can see not properly calibrated tv sets.
I'd like to purchase only LEDDLP light engine and make 70-80" videowall with high quality rear projection screen like this http://www.screen-tech.de/ST-Professional-W.htm

Both Samsung and Sony make great sets, and reviews are mixed in terms of which is better. It just comes down to personal preference. IMO, the color wheel DLP models are better than the LED models as long as you don't see rainbows.

I've seen them both side by side at two locations and the 61" Sammy LED looked better than the 60" Sony SXRD in both. That being said, it still means little as these sets are not calibrated when on display at a store. They basically take them out of the box and plug them in. I will say, however, that with the same source in SD mode, the Sammy looked much, much better than any other set that was on display (again, all were probably uncalibrated).

IMO, that's not really going to help you since 1) store displays can be misleading (one day, I saw the SXRD in both Tweeter and CC, and it looked like the worst display in tweeter and the best display in CC, obviously related to set-up and feed issues), and 2) it comes down to personal preference, and one person's opinion may not match yours.
