Bugs?

I'm thinking about setting up an old Sharp LCD PJ (that I have sitting around) for outside use. I was planning on hanging the PJ off the soffit of our cape and shooting it across our back deck onto a screen which I'd set up in our back yard.

While I really like the idea of watching a movie on the back deck over a nice meal and a bottle of wine, but I'm a little concerned that I might go thru all the hassle of fabricating everything to make it happen, only to find out I have 6' bug shadows crawling across the screen in the middle of the movie! I can live with bugs on the screen itself, but do you guys have problems with bugs hanging out on the PJ lens itself?

So how much of an issue are bugs with your outdoor theater?

BTW, we live in CT.

That's a funny concern! Never occurred to me on my outdoor theater night. I was concerned about bugs (Not on the PJ, but just in general) and I did spray the grass and used an outdoor fogger about 30 minutes before I fired up the projector. The foggers generally say they work for about 4-6 hours, and in my case, no one complained about mosquitos at all. And also no huge shadows on my screen.

I have had about a dozen movie nights. Never had a bug block the image.

If you are concerned, perhaps there's some bug hidden sound device that keeps them away, there must be sound technologies out there that put off bugs.

This will be third season for me and so far I've not had that problem.

But I do tend to get eaten alive. I spray Yard Guard when I set up my portable screen for the neighbors and I just installed a zapper for the deck screen. Seemsot work pretty well.

A bug zapper and a case of Bud and you've got yourself quality Southern entertainment. The heck with a projector and screen. LOL

I've not ventured into backyard theaters, but it sounds interesting and after we have some renovations/additions done to our house I may try it.

Now, I need to leave this thread before my wife sees...she's not too keen on the outdoor theater idea right now....

My wife was the one that really wanted us to do it. It's more of a social event than anything, and really allowed us to meet the neighbors when we moved into our new neighborhood.

Good point about getting eaten alive. What do you guys use for bug spray (that doesn't smell too bad)?

Ran The DaVinci Code (All 2.5 hours of it) Saturday night and the zapper worked extremely well. I wasn't bothered at all. I have it mounted on a pole on the other side of the double wide stairs comming up from my basement and slightly above the floor of the deck. I noticed about midway through the movie that I could see the ultra-violet light from the zapper bulb on my white socks. So I'm guessing that at that distance, it is attracting the bugs away from the deck seating area.

So, I'm planning on not using any spray until I find out if this really works or not.

Oh yeah, if you can keep the bugs away it helps make the movie that much more enjoyable...

If you're getting bugs landing on your projector (or on the lens), you can simply put a small fan that blows air over the projector. The bugs wont land if it's even slightly windy.
