Official Winbook/Vivitek 46" LCD 46D1 thread

This thread is for the Winbook/Vivitek 46D1 1366x768 LCD.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0258756

As far as I can tell, Microcenter is the "manufacturer" of this set, as no one else carries it, so this is the "manufacturer" product page.

I believe this sets a new low for 720p or higher 46" LCD's with ATSC/NTSC and ClearQAM tuners.

Anyone know if this set can accept 1360x768 @ 60HZ over VGA and HDMI and 1:1 pixel map on both inputs?

General comments/reviews?

Whose LCD panel is in this thing? Chie Mei? LG? etc?

General comment -- I was in Microcenter in Columbus, Ohio yesterday looking to pick up Forza 2 for my xbox 360. They have the 46D1 on display in the front of the store so you're sure to see it when you walk in. They have it hooked up to a HTPC and it was playing a DVD. Picture quality was generally good, no better or worse than most other 2nd or 3rd tier displays. I didn't stop to check the specs but I wouldn't expect contrast ratios or black levels to be on par with Samsung, Sony or Panasonic.

I checked it out at lunch today.

It was being fed 1080i via analog component, TNT HD, a re run of ER.

I checked all the menus, and it appeared to be at default settings, with the Brightness and Contrast at the middle setting, and the Backlight pegged to the right of the scale. At these settings, the picture lacked punch and was kinda washed out.

Once I lowered the backlight about 2/3 to 3/4, and reduced Brightness and bumped the Contrast a bit, it looked very good.

The Aspect Ratio settings in the on screen menus don't appear to have the "One to One" or "1:1" setting like the 32" Winbook I bought two years ago. This doesn't give me a warm fuzzy, as I will never buy an LCD panel that can't pixel map it's native resolution.

I would have bought it this afternoon to try it at home with my PC's, but Microcenter has a 15% restock fee on opened LCD panels

Build quality and industrial design appear excellent.

Anything new on this TV? Microcenter has it now for 999.99 minus 100 rebate. This is the lowest price you can get for a 46" LCD.

How's the sound quality?

No complains about the sound. I had a sony 27" flatscreen and the sound is about the same. Of course you can't compare it to a 5.1 or something. My only complain now is that it might be a little big but i think it's a better deal than the 40".

I have yet to really calibrate it.

My brother in-law just got one, the default setting is way too bright, I will probably fire up Avia and see if it will look any better the next time I stop by his house.

The brightness out of the box for me was 50 ( max ). I'm currently using about half (25).

yeah, I see I missed it at this price. I saw it on Sunday and hesitated. When I checked the microcenter site Monday, it was back to normal price. I'm more interested in the Vivitek, since it seems to have more inputs than the Winbook, even though they both appear to be the same.

I've read all the threads about 1080i vs 1080p, but I still can't seem to bring myself to purchase this tv, even with the somewhat decent reviews I've seen on the web.

899 + tax for a 46" tv had me seriously looking though. I just haven't heard enough about the tv. Anybody have this hooked up to a HD player (Toshiba/MS xbox360 hd drive) or blue ray player? Just wondering how good the picture quality really is. I currently have an Olveia 37" 1080i tv so I'm looking for a vote of confidence in the tv

Cnet has a full review if that helps you.

They are exactly the same TV. The specs on the vivitek is wrong. I don't have an HD player yet but HD channels via qam looks awesome.

Sorry it took me so long to get back, if anyone even cares, this TV is pretty good considering it's price. However I do have a couple of things I don't like about it:

1) the "Fill" mode is quite annoying IMHO, you can easily tell both side of the screen is streched to fill the screen, not very natural.

2) it doesn't have a memory for the setting of the picture, for example my brother-in-law wife like the picture real bright so she has to adjust the setting each time instead of having afew preset to select from.

All in all it is good for the price, not something for the AV enthusiast that visit this forum regularly. One last comment, the picture for SD is pretty good.

Does anyone have a remote problem with their winbook/vivitek? My winbook started having problems with the remote. It wouldn't respond. Then sometimes, when i press a button, eg. number 1, it will loop and keep repeating it. Like when i press volume down, it will go down till zero and when i press volume up, it'll go to the max.

I just returned the winbook and microcenter gave me a brand new vivitek because they don't have winbooks anymore. Weird thing is, this one has the same problem.

I tested the remote in the store on the display unit and there wasn't a problem. Man, my luck is so bad. I'm going to return this vivitek and make sure they test the replacement at the store.

I am considering buying the 40"or 46" Vivitek LCD. In trying to find out whether the tuner is a QAM tuner or not, I stumbled across this interesting tibit. The panel manufacturer is Samsung. Which to me, is a good thing. I am still not sure if the tuner is qam capable, though the microcenter website says it is. The Vivitek website and the owners manual do not mention this. Below is a FAQ from the website.

Q. What is the lifespan on a Vivitek LCD?
Vivitek uses AUO LCD panels for LCD TVs smaller than 40"and Samsung panels for 40"and 46"LCD TVs. The panel manufacturers determine the life span of the LCD. There are other factors that affect the life span as environment temperature, contrast setting, etc.

Qam - Yes

Just picked one up at Micro Center on sale.

Set up went fine, picture is great, but the remote is quirky.

When switching input sources from DVD player to HD Receiver I get no signal available and have to push the button again. A minor annoyance.

Major concern is that I cannot adjust the aspect using the remote.

I get to that part of the menu and scroll up and down through the settings (normal, zoom, panoramic etc.)with no results.

Anyone else have similar problems?

I bought the 46 inch vivitek, from micro center, for 799- 100 rebate, and am very happy with it. I also have an olevia 37inch and it is very comparable in terms of picture quality

Does anyone here have the 40" vivitek? If so do you like it? How is the picture using SD?

How is the picture on these Vivitek's with SD? It's interesting that I only see a 40" listed at microcenter now (no 46" that I see)...

Anymore comments on either of these sets?

I purchased the 46" version 46D1 in December from Micro Center when the 3-day sale was going on...799 - 300 (instant savings, floor model display but just opened the day before, rebate) = 499. The quality is great better than i expected.

I was just wondering is there a way to upgrade the firmware for this model and is the usb port usable for a flash drive?
