I thought so, that's why I asked.

Can anyone answer if they think the TrueHD, etc is worth the upgrade. I don't mind shelling out the the money I just want to see if anyone else can tell the difference in sound quality.

Unfortunately, that's mostly up to you. This is the first AVR I've had since an old Sony surround receiver I had about 12 years ago (haven't had it since 2000). For me, it's been great having a real stereo system again, and the AVR abilities are icing on the cake. It's definitely a good value for the money. And it should hopefully be fairly future-proof (at least for the next 4 or 5 years or so). As for the difference between TrueHD and DD or DTS, yes, there is a decent difference, but it's not nearly as huge as some might have you believe. I'd say for the A/V switching benefits and ability to go to 7.1 later, it wouldn't be a bad investment. And besides, it kinda sounds like you're itching to buy something new...

Quick question again about TrueHD and the 605. After a lot reading I finally got my A35 to send TrueHD to the 605 and TrueHD was a selectable option under listening modes and the light displayed. Now however, I get no sound out of any speakers at all. I'm using 300 HD DVD and when I switch back to D+, it switches back and no sound problems at all.

I am itching, but I just wanted to hear if others hear a difference. Your posts have been very helpful. I'll let you know what I decide to do.

Edit:
Well, I took too long and missed the deal...back to $409 @Amazon..... It's been at that price before plenty of times, so I will wait.
Wow, amazon completely sold out of the 605s. They have other vendors selling the 605 through them, but amazon no longer has the 605 listed themselves.

I'd be more tempted to get a cable box, or TiVo or something so you can make your TV a DISPLAY ONLY device. A new TV will leave you with this same problem as long as you've got your cable running right into it...albeit the new TV will likely have an easier way for determining if you can turn the speakers off.

Will, at times with this receiver, I feel like a 17-year-old with a 400-hp muscle car, you know, too much power that I can't handle. But I'll figure it all out with some time. I'll give your advice thought and we'll see what the future holds.

Thanks for your input!

It's still being sold by Amazon, but the price went up to $409.

There is an authorized distributor selling these on ebay for 349.9X plus shipping it is where I bought mine. Just search "sr605" on ebay and you will find it. He usually sells them in a day or two once he lists them 100 at a time. Over half are already gone!

Well things are better somewhat. I have managed to get TrueHD to my 605 directly from the Toshiba A35, but it drops sound in and out pretty frequently. D+ is working great. I have 2 Phillips 1.3a cables and one of them refuses to deliver any sound at all, while the other and also my Psyclone cable deliver the sound, but with some drop offs. Does this sound like an overall cable issue or a problem with the reciever?
I seriously doubt that it is your cables. Based upon what I've seen it is either the 605 or the Toshiba. My bet is on the A-35 - have you updated it to the latest firmware? I don't the 605 only doing it in one mode "some" of the time. All IMO...

Where did you see he was an authorized distributor?
According to Onyko's website this guy is not an authorized dealer http://www.onkyousa.com/locations_intdealer.cfm and the warranty will not be valid. http://www.onkyousa.com/warranty.cfm

Jeeeeeeeeeeeez,

You guys in the US are paying around $400.00 for the 605. While we in the UK are having to pay around £400.00. Which equates to more than $800.00
post #4513 of 10235
One case where the dollar is stronger than the pound, one very discrete case....
hey guys. the 605 is now 351.47 from amazon.

"Ships from and sold by WholeSaleAV."

It's still ~$410 from Amazon.

amazon just honored my refund. I originally ordered at 429.99.

Just to clear something up in my head, and I know I saw this but I forgot where to find it. If I have component, S-Video, Composite coming into my 605, and I output HDMI, they will be output at what they came in at? Lets just say all were 480p sources, would they output HDMI 480p?

Question 2, 1080i source coming in HDMI to receiver then HDMI out, same deal, 1080I out? What if my TV is only 720p, then what? The TV downscales?

Anything coming in analog (composite, svideo, component) will be up-scaled to 720p IF it's going out thru HDMI.

Anything fed into the AVR thru HDMI goes out at the same resolution... just passes it on thru.

Yes, your TV will downscale/convert/cast/whatever to 720p AFAIK

He is under a parent company called Stereo Advantage Company. Onkyo doesn't frequently update their site but I confirmed it by calling them. It has only been 3 months but he is selling these things by the truckload because of his pricing. I have successfully registered that and the 805 he sold me with Onkyo for warranty purposes.

Thanks. I think though that there is no upconvert as my DVD player is 480p coming into the 605 component and leaving HDMI at 480p as far as I can tell, correct?

well, I jumped on the 605 from amazon yesterday and would like some opinions if possible.
Will the 605 be an upgrade to the panny xr55 that i currently use sound wise?
I recently purchased a sony sxrd kds-60a200, toshiba hd-a2, and xbox 360 elite.
My speaker setup is athena b1s(if i remember correctly) with a c1 ina 5.1 setup and my panny sounds great but I liked the option of hdmi and upconverting my 480i cable. Did I make a good choice and will I notice anydifference?

Weird Huh? I've tried two different SR605 receivers, two different HR-20's and two different remote controls and a variety of HDMI cables. There seems to be an engineering problem associated with this Onkyo receiver model and the HR-20 DTV box. Anyone else experience this? I'm tired of pulling my hair out over this and I'm about to return my second Onkyo receiver and start over with a Pioneer.

Does, anyone else out there know about this problem? I too have the same Directv box (however, I juts got my 605 yesterday and it is not set up yet). Just curious to see if this is an isolated issue of something I may need to consider once I put my home theatre together.......

Yes, I think you are going to hear a clear difference. I actually had a pretty good onkyo HTR-510 before I got the 605. The 605 really brings out the rear channels a lot more then the previous onkyo did, I don't know why this is but I can hear a huge difference. Probably do to the fact that now I can listen to HD audio too

I have a whole athena setup. I have the F1.2 towers, and the rest of the surround sound is from the Point 5 series and it sounds unbelievable. The sub i have is a Cadence CSX-12 which is really nice too. So far I can hear a pretty big difference between the old onkyo vs the 605.

I also have a SXRD-50" which looks stunning, I know you are loving the 60"

Question for what to input.

I have 3 devices going into my receiver. HD Cable box, Toshiba A3 DVD Player, Xbox Elite.

My HD Cable box has to go in HDMI since I spend most of my time on that. I am struggling between the other HDMI input on the receiver. Right now, I only have a 2.1 sound setup (Polk r50's and csr center).

Would it be more beneficial for me to plug the Xbox in as HDMI and then the A3 component with an optical/digital audio?

Or vice versa...
thanks for the input! I know back when i got my xr55 everyone was saying they sounded better than alot of much more expensive receivers and i have never owned an onkyo, that is why i am wondering so much if the sound quality will actually be better...

yeah, the sxrd pq is sweet isnt it...

Well, I will tell you this. The mere fact that you will be hearing Lossless audio is going to make the onky much better then the receiver you have right now. I think that the 605 sounds incredible. I would pick it up from CC or something just to test it out and take it back within 30 days. Maybe you are worried about how Music will sound? I bet that you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. But only you can tell.
I got mine from CC for $400 last week, and I decided to keep it since I already had it set up and it has exceeded my expectations

The "shipped from Amazon" price just dropped to $380 (from $409). This time I got it.....see my posts above where I missed it. $10 more than the $370 yesterday, but if it drops again withing 30 days, I'll call and get the refund. Add in $3.99 for Prime overnight shipping and I will have it tomorrow!
Does anyone know if the 605 needs forced 24p input in order to output 24p? I have the A-35 HD DVD player, the 605 receiver, and the mitsu 73833 display. The 833 doesn't seem to show you frame rate so I have no way of verifying if I'm watching 1080p24 or 1080p60.

I'm taking the gamble too. I can't imagine it will suck based on the rave reviews, but if you return it,

unopened:
you must pay return shipping ~$30

opened:
return shipping + 20% re-stocking fee since they can't sell it as new ~$110

unless it is defective and you need a replacement, then Amazon will pay for you to return it within the first 30 days.
