I am posting this on multiple boards so all of the components are represented properly. I have tried every setting, read evey manualy, done everything, but for some reason, things are not the same as they were yesterday. My wife pushed a button and all hell broke loose. Here are the questions:

I have a Onkyo 605, DirectTV H21-200, Panasonic TH-42PE7U.

1. The lip synch is way off. The audio comes out of the receiver speaker after it has appeared on the screen. How do I get them to synch up?

2. I cannot for the life of me enable the Ez Synch. The 605 should synch with the panny. They used to until yesterday. Now, I cannot change the speakers on the ez synch setting on the TV to theatre, it says to check the HDMI connection, which is fine. In other words, I cannot control volume on the 605 with my panny remote. And the bars used to come on the screen when the volume is adjusted. No longer. I have HDMI monitor out, no luck, they disappeared. I have all HDMI from the Directtv to the 605 to the panny.

3. When I turn the tv back on, the 605 comes on, but goes to DVD, not the SAT/Cable setting like it should. Again, this all used to work until yesterday. What the heck happened.

I am sure I have other questions that I forgot, but these will get me going. Please help as I have spent hours trying to fix it. Bottom line, how do I get the volume bars on my panny from the 605, how do I get the 605 and the panny to synch, and how do I adjust the lip synch issue, and how do I get the panny to recognize the home theatre speakers instead on the TV ones?

Please please please help.

Dumb question, but have you tried a factory reset yet? No idea how you got yourself into this weird configuration though .
well, i got my 605 today and many hours later I finally have this thing sounding great... I tried running audyssee many times and my rears and sub still sounded very soft with hardly anything going through them. After checking with an spl meter on the test tones, my sub and rears were way off from the fronts and center in my seating area. I finally decided to just manually set my system up with my spl meter. Wow, what a difference that made. With all my speakers setup at the correct db for my seating area this thing now sounds great... My panny x55 sounded just as good though on dd and dts but my hd dvds sound better than it did on the panny. I was about ready to give up on this thing around 10pm but now at 2am I am smiling. I am going to pay for it this morning getting up to go to work though.

p.s. I have no synch issues or anythng with either my 360 elite or my hd-a2...

When you have a chance, could you let me know the settings you have on your A2? Is your subwoofer kicking in when playing DD+ or TrueHD? Mine is not working right, but I don't know if it's the 605 or the SW. Do you have any specific movies/scenes that you recommend for reference? I have:

Transformers, 300, Batman Begins, Shrek 3, Apollo 13, Perfect Storm, Four Brother, Constantine)

BTW, for those who have been trying to help me, this link from ebay has great pics of my SW (Yamaha YST-SW105)

mine sounds great on everything now. That is comparing it to my panny xr55(which i thought sounded great but i wanted hd audio and upconversion on my analog satellite connection). Do you have an spl meter? if not go to radio shack TODAY and get one!!!!! My a2 setting is spdif=bitstream hdmi=auto

with audyssee my speaker setup came out to(this might not be exact I am going off memory)
LF +4
C +2
RF+2
RR-1
LR -4
SUB-7
It sounded terrible and almost sounded like i was listening to a stereo source instead of surround. Not to mention I had to run the volume in the upper 70s to get to where i could hear the back surrounds decent and then the center channel was overpowering... sub still didnt have much....
I then took my spl meter with the volume set to where my spl meter read 75db on the LF speaker using the test sound in the speaker setup and manually set each speaker level to where it came through at 75db in my seating position... I do like my sub alittle hot, so i set it at 79db.(my sub is one of the ones that people were building on here a couple years ago with the dayton amp and 15" subwoofer in a custom built cabinet and I must say it will make my house move) I turned off the audysee EQ also and thought the entire sound field sounded better without it. The last thing i did was set intellivolume to +10(which all that does is give you the same volume at 55 compared to 65 before...hope this helps
the spl meter i got is radio shack
..
Model: 33-2055
Catalog #: 33-2055

Edit: I cant remeber my new speaker levels. I can schek when i get home if it will bive you some comparison..

Thanks, I might have to check the meter out. Can you let me know (even if it's later) what your audio is set to on the A2. HDMI Audio out and SPDIF audio out?

Thanks

I'll have to try Onkyo support. If they can't help, it's going back to Amazon.

If you have full band speakers and SW detected, check if "DoubleBass" is ON (speaker settings menu) - see page 71 of User Manual for explanation

Still no picture...

Was on phone with Onkyo Support for over an hr the other day and I still have no HDMI or component Video when running through my 605.

When originally setup I had PS3 (HDMI), Wii (Component), CD (RCA), and satellite (Composite) all in then out through the HDMI and plugged into a Toshiba 51HX84.

HDMI monitor out never worked, had it set to yes, so I figured I would turn the HDMI monitor to no and just get everything going and use the composite video out of the 605 for now.

Got CD and satellite to work and I get audio from the PS3 and Wii but all I get is a blue screen for video.

I have tried different HDMI cables, even went out and got a brand new one and still blue screen.

Anyone have any suggestions? Could it be a handshake problem between the 605 and my tv? Could it be a bad receiver? (I hope not since it was a bday present)

Thanks

I will, thanks for the tip. I'll post back with results.

I just read page 71 and hope that might work. I have noticed that the Front and Center channels see more "bassy". I won't be able to test until tonight.

So what are you running to your TV right now? HDMI or other?
Can you get video EVER? For example, the satellite going in thru Component, can you get component out to the TV and get video?

If you're going HDMI out to the TV, HDMI monitor must be ON/YES. Set HDMI Audio Out to NO/OFF. Is the TV input set correctly?

Have you tried different power-on orders? Like 605 first, then the component, then TV, etc?

Lastly, does everything work if the 605 is out of the equation?

Also if you are running Component into the 605, are you running component out from the 605 to your TV or are you trying to get it from the HDMI? I think the component is a pass thru, currently I have my PS2 running component into the 605 and a separate component cables from my 605 to my DLP. Works fine for me. I would also check to make sure you have your HDMI cable running from your 605 to your TV in the correct port.

My 605's HDMI-out port went bad a month after first setting it up. If I put alot of pressure on the HDMI out cable to the port, I can get an image. Push your hdmi-out cable with some pressure and see if the video appears.

So I recently set up my Onkyo TX-SR605 reveiver and have ran into a few issues that I can not seem to figure out. I have an HDMI output from my receiver into my TV. I have my monitor output as "yes" to HDMI. For my HDMI input, I have DVD as "_ _ _", as I am using component cables from my DVD player into my receiver. I have the Component input for DVD set as "In 1". The video seems to upconvert fine from compnent to HDMI into my TV.

When I attempted to do the same thing with other component sources, such as my Xbox 360, I can get the sound to come in fine, but the picture does not come in. I know it is not my receivers component input, as I have tried my DVD player with the other component inputs into the recevier and the video feeds through fine out to my TV with the HDMI cable. So I am not sure why the upconversion with component cables works with my DVD player and not my Xbox 360.

Another issue I had was with the HDMI cable input into my receiver. I set my HDMI input setting for my cable box as "HDMI In 1" and the sound from my Cable box comes into my receiver, but no video is outputted into my TV through th HDMI cable. I don't understand what's going on. Please help, as I am getting frustrated with this whole thing. If anyone has any solutions to this problem and can help, I would really appreciate it.

If you connect your cable box straight to your TV using HDMI, does it display correctly? If you connect your Xbox 360 straight to your TV using component, does it display correctly? What resolution do you have your Xbox 360 set to? What resolution is your cable box set to?

ok all , I need some help....
when I set my hd-a2 spdif setting to bitstream and check the display on my receiver it shows fs: 48khz
when i set my a2 spdif to pcm the receiver shows fs: 96khz
both on pcm multichannel

this is with my hdmi setting set to auto.
I am using hdmi for audio and video.

my question is which of these would i rather be seeing? I am thinking it is the 96khz which would go back to what i read somewhere about if you are using hdmi you still want to set spdif to pcm because of a glitch or something in the a2...
In case anyone wants to know, I found this by pushing the display button on my remote watching an hd dvd...

Ahhh, interesting find bigboar. It looks like there's finally an explanation for the suggestion to change the SPDIF setting to PCM when using HDMI audio (BTW, it appears on page 21 of the manual).

It seems that when the A2/A3 has to deal with transcoding the audio to 5.1 over SPDIF, it outputs everything at a 48kHz sample rate. But when it only deals with downmixing the SPDIF audio to 2-channel PCM, it's able to output at 96kHz over HDMI (the stereo PCM is still at 48kHz).

Now, the question for someone with an A35 or XA2 is this: What are the sample rates of most bitstreamed DD+ soundtracks? If the tracks on most discs are 48kHz, it doesn't seem like there'd be much point in upsampling them to a 96kHz sample rate.
also, let me add that playing sd dvds still work perfect over hdmi with it set on auto. My display still shows dolby digital or whatever the movie is.....It seams like someone said it would be a problem with sd dvds if Iremember correctly...

Well, I've just about given up on this reciever. I check the "Double Bass" feature, but had already set it up. I then ran the setup where it sends a signal to each speaker (snow). The SW was kinda low at -3db, so I increased it to +3db and could hear the tone. Put in Batman Begins and the SW worked great. My thinking was maybe the SW levels were too low. I stopped the movie and switched the SW back to standby mode to see if the increased levels would kick it off and the SW has not kicked on since. Not even for test tones, not even when set to "always on" as opposed to standby. Now it doesn't work on DTS DD, nothing. Nothing on Multichannel, nothing on Direct, zip, zilch nada.

Without the SW, it sounds like a piece of **** in my opinion. To top that off, my A2 update is frozen. I got to the "OK"/"Cancel" screen hit OK and nothing happend. It says VER UP on the display and has been like that for 20 mins. I even hit the power button on the machine and it won't shut off. Unreal. This has ben a pretty ****** HD week for me . I really don't want to go back to my Denon, but I may have to.

well here is some more news... I decided to go back and use audyseey again. This time it worked great!!! I went back and checked its calibrated settings with my spl meter and everything checked out except for the subwoofer(I had to increase its ouput level by 3 t get the db reading correct). Now, I kinda think it sounds better with audyseey selected as the EQ instead of off also. Just to add, most of my testing so far has been done with Transformers as I am trying to compare the differences in sound with the dd+ compared to the dd I was listening to it in with my panny xr55. I decided to put in 300 and select trueHD and WOW! it is absolutely amazing!!! I dont know if I am gonna play around with it anymore....ah I probably will....

Edit: this time with audyseey I took a pillow and set it on the back of my sofa with the mic on top of the pillow to try to make it as close as possible to my ear height. I also made sure the mic was as straight up and down as possible, then i stood in the doorway out of the room while i ran the program. I took my settings from center position in the seating area then right next to center on each side like a person sitting directly next to me instead of going to the furthest point in each direction for the sitting area(I have a sectional and now I think that was my big problem trying to use audyseey as i was going over to each corner of it and at that point it is kinda out of the sound field so I am thinkingit was trying to way over compensate)

how does the rca cable come from your sub? I mean does your sub have 2 outs and and you use one of the outs with a cable or are you using a cable that goes from 2 to 1 so you use both outs on the sub(this is what i am usning)?

The sub has 2 RCA outs. One says "L (mono)" and the other says "R". I have the RCA cable going from the "L (mono)" out to the "Pre-Out Subwoofer" on the 605.

ok, first of all on the sub youre actualy saying your using the L INPUT right? just want to make sure because my sub has R and L inputs and outputs. youre doing it correctly if your going to your L input, or you can buy a cable that goes 2 to 1, I dont know if it helps or not but it definately doesnt hurt..

Everything works fine if the 605 is out of the equation. I have triple checked to make sure that the HDMI monitor is set to yes when Ive tried using it.

I CAN get video on the satellite but nothing else... and no video at all when I use HDMI out (even w/ HDMI monitor set to yes)

Only video out to TV that seems to work is Composite.

I have not tried different power-on orders. Will try that now.

Interesting. I have a 605, but not a STB that has HDMI. I will have a HDMI DVR soon, but if the 605 has engineering issues, I want to return it. Already it locked up citing new firmware needed, but turned out to be an errant message. Guess what...when you reset to unlock the 605, you lose all programming, calibrations, etc. Isn't that nice!
hi guys.. as being my first post, I'd like to ask you a question on Onkyo TX SR 605 for which I 'm about to make a purchase decision.

My question is that. I already do have an Onkyo TX SR 503 ( an older model , no HDMI) with 8 speakers. If I only buy TX SR 605 without any speakers, I wonder If my older ones fit this new A/V.Can I use them with 605.

I'm coming from Europe to NY city next week, so I can buy one there. The only problem would be , I guess , the 120 / 220 watt electricity change which I think I can solve it with a converter. You know here that unit is soo expensive.

By the way do you kow if any stores sell it without the speakers?
thanks a lot.

Does anyone know how to set the input power up state on the 605. I want the unit to power up with the SAT input selected but it always powers up with the GAME input selected. This is the case no mater which input was selected at SHUTDOWN.

If I can get to the store and get a 2 to 1 (assuming they make them?), it might be worth a shot.

My unit always powers up to last mode that was selected at SHUTDOWN (Using the Standyby/On button).

My unit will also power up by pushing any of the input select buttons. It will power up in the mode of which ever button is pushed. If you push the Game/TV button, what mode does yours power up in?

It would be nice to get a consensus here on what other users are experiencing with this.
