Quick question - is it safe to run this receiver without any speakers connected?

I'm pretty sure it is but I've heard of certain amps needing speakers attached for power draw.

My basement just flooded and I'm going to have to use my receiver with just headphones for a little bit.

Thanks in advance...

Recently got the 605 for the family room. Oppo 981 is connected to the reciever through HDMI 1. I use the dvd player to play music CDs. I am not able to get sound from the speakers(Not the TV speakers) unless I have the TV turned on. I called support and they told me that it is because I have it connected through HDMI. Was wondering if it is true?

My dish network DVR thru HDMI to the TV and I have an optical cable connected from the TV to the 605. When watching TV I am able to get sound out of my TV speakers and not from the 5.1 setup!! I was wondering if there is anything that I am doing wrong? HDMI audio out is set to off!!!

Thanks in advance for all the help

What Onkyo support told you is true. One workaround is to run an optical cable from your Oppo to your 605 and assign it to CD, or run stereo analog cables from your Oppo to the CD inputs. You can also turn HDMI Monitor off whenever you want to listen to CD's through HDMI.

The optical output on most TV's will output 5.1 when you're using the TV's tuner, but not when you're using an HDMI input. Run the optical cable from your DVR to the receiver, not from the TV to the receiver.

I just tried this myself I thought I remember getting sound even when my TV is off and I do. I have a PS3, PC, 360,Dish Network HD box all connected with HDMI and all have sound through the 605 even when the TV is off. I don't know the specifics of the Oppo player you have but for me at least as long as I have the 605 and whatever I want sound from on it works fine.

I tried on PS3, PC, 360 all play CD's fine with TV off as long as you can start them playing without seeing the OSD for them

I haven't been on here in a while and my searches didn't turn up what I was looking for since there are so many posts now. I've had my 605 for a while. On some movies (on a Panasonic BD-30) the dialog seems to be extremely quiet to the point where it is barely audible. When I turn the volume up I have to be ready for an action scene where all of the sudden it is very loud. I'm not using Audyssey settings (set it myself) and my Center Channel is set 2dB above my Left and Right channels (in the Level Adjustment). Is this just something inherent to movies or is there something I can change on the 605 to improve dialog quality?

do you have an spl meter(dB meter)? are your front speakers matched? or of different manufacturing processes?

They are the speakers that come in the Onkyo 908 HTIB package. When I run tests on them everything sounds fine...it is when playing movies that it doesn't seem right. What's weird is also older Dolby Digital soundtracks are louder than TrueHD or DTS-MA. The minute I go from the main menu into the movie and the track changes to the lossless the volume drops.

dont worry about the loudness difference on lossless compared to lossy tracks. they are mastered completely different. just turn up the volume to compensate.

i would invest or see if u can borrow an spl meter to make sure all of your speakers are playing at the same volume.
all you have to do is set the spl meter at the same listening position you sit in and go through the test tones on the receiver and adjust the levels accordingly to balance out the system.

i also recommend checking out the following forum:

i learned a crap ton of information from visiting that site.

it also could be the center channel in that package just blows for voice reproduction... *shrugs*

I have thsoe same speakers and I have my center at +3 over the sides. It sounds OK though.

That is the main reason they are ok speakers for older 5.1 audio where they had a lot more going to the center. The newer HD/Lossless formats seem to balance out everything to all speakers rather than amping the center more than the other channels for whatever reason. Usually if you have a good center channel and you change your center to +2 to +4 higher than your two fronts then it should compensate but being the home theater in the box setup the center isn't the greatest it just can't compensate.

The only thing I can suggest is to turn down all other channels and then turn up the center more and more till you find a good balance that works for you. Audyssey is pretty good on its own it is a lot better than other receivers auto setup since it tests 3 spots rather than the one of others. At the least if you run Audyssey it would give you a good starting point.

going along with what this guy is saying... is it normal to really push the receiver to get a normal sound level? Using a directv source for music and movies, at 60 its really quiet. Id say 75-80 is the minimum for movies even that isnt loud... is this normal?

also, it gets EXTREMELY hot, thats normal right??

THANKS!

oh forgot to mention that the speakers i am running are very efficent as well... i am running the klipsch f-2 system (f-2, c-2, s-2s)

Thats very high. We play movies at 40-50 and by 60 the windows rattle with the base and its too loud. COnversely, 30ish is almost silent. I wish you could adjust it somehow to actually get a good range. 40-50 is only 10 steps of actually listenable range, leaving 90 unused.

So I just ordered one of these on sale because I have been waiting for HDMI upconversionn for under $250 and come here to find out about the 720p limit.

I am wondering how people are coming along with it and whether it messes with peoples setup much.

Here's my story:

I am upgrading from a TX LR552 which I am VERY happy with (small, quiet and enough power for my area) but I am unhappy as I have 2 displays (HD72 and a 26 inch LCD TV/Monitor) and have to run cables to both... at this point I run an HDMI cable and a set of component cables to each which sucks.

I ordered the 605 specifically so I could get it down to HDMI only and right now the limitation doesn't matter to me as both my displays are 720p.

But with all the "future proofing" of the 605 it has me worried what happens when the inevitable move to 1080 comes along (obviously a 26 inch LCD tv is feeling pretty small).

Part of me says, don't worry, most 1080 sources will have HDMI out (I don't really mind getting an external HDMI switcher to make up for the 2 inputs on the 605) and in 2 or 3 years an HDMI upconverting reciever that handles 1080 will be affordable.

The other part of me says it sucks paying hundreds of $$$ to get down to a single cable and finding out it only works in certain cirucmstances.

So I guess what I am asking is, those of you out there with the 605s are you running into this issue often and how inconvenient is it really?

BTW I don't think I ever saw it clearly stated but 1080i comp turns into 720p HDMI... I would assume 1080p comp turns into 720p HDMI or does it somehoes manage to pass as 1080p?

Thanks for any input!

I'm pushing 70+ and that's with input at 50% What rate are others inputing?

Not quite sure of your question. As a user of mostly 720 I can say the 605 pushed 1080 out to my 1680x1050 Acer. Looked crappy but NOT 720 for sure. I am sure when it comes time, 1080 will be no problem.

you turn it up to 70+ when watching movies? I seriously cant hear anything up till 50... i used it at 75 for movie and that was not that loud...

btw what ddo you mean input at 50%?
?? When using PDVD or TMT from htpc you chose the level of output to the AVR. I generally don't like to up that too much, but use 50% I find unless I really push it 80-90% out to the 605, I have to crank the 605.

I find nothing 0 to 50--granted maybe really quiet but seems unusual.

Everyone has different speakers some are a lot more efficient than others so require less power to output the same amount of db as others. The less efficient your speakers are the more you have to turn it up. For my theater setup in a very large room the 605 simply isn't enough to get the total theater sound but in a smaller room with different speakers that I do use a 605 in I don't turn it up past 50 but if it was in the theater room it would be at all full volume and still not drive the speakers how I want it.

No one can say that 70 is too high or loud even if you have the same speakers just the size of the room and furniture and sound treatments can change everything. As long as you don't have to turn it to full all the time to get what you want out of it then the 605 should be fine for your use.
It's fine all right, and knew that before purchase, just seems... BTW I've used 96spl and 101 spl speakers and it's the same. And the room is 16x20.
i just have the 605 (no other audio equip...other than my speakers of course) and i have to put mine up to about 45-50 to hear anything, then usually have it between 55-65 depending on source. sometimes movies or rock band get cranked to 70, but that gets too loud for extended periods of time

There is no 720p limit if you put in a 1080p via HDMI to the 605 you get 1080p out. If your trying to change a SD or ED source to HDMI then the 605 can change it to 720p but not really an advertised feature of the 605.

thats what worries me... i am using some of the most efficient speakers on the market (klipsch f-2 series)... so if i am running it at 75 (at least) for movies, theres no problem? 65 is the minimum i use for normal tv watching

and the thing gets hot as an iron, even if i am just using pass through and the volume muted from the receiver (using the tv speakers)

Sorry, I should have been more clear:

When inputting 1080i over component and upconverting to HDMI, I am under the impression the 605 will downscale to 720p.

This is not an issue for me now as I only have a 720p display, but I am worrying about when I get a 1080 display.

The second part of my question is a clarification that ANY 1080 input (not just 1080i) via component and upconverting to HDMI will result in a 720p image over HDMI.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think 1080p inputs over component will work at all.

I may not explain this correctly but hopefully someone knows what I am trying to ask.
I am considering purchasing a PS3 to run with my 605. I have read that some receivers do not properly process the PCM very well by not applying the +10db boost correctly. Dose anyone know if the 605 processes this correctly? I don't want to loose any of the sound quality so I could get a player that bitstreams instead if this is an issue. Also if there is a setting I need to turn on or off can you please let me know?
Thanks.
