Upscaling DVD players with Optical Out?

Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

I just picked up a Philip's 5960, which works pretty well, but unfortunately I don't have optical out to my receiver!!

I am interested in an HDMI upscaling DVD player that also has optical out. There are a few DVD players you all rave about, but they are rather expensive.

Anyone know of a sub-100 dollar solution to my problem?

Thank you.

The Oppo players are very well regarded. Last week I got my Oppo 970 and the picture improvement is dramatic. SO far I have had no problems with it except figuring out how to get DVD-audio to play properly. But I managed to resolve that issue.

Sony DVP-NS75H can be had for about $100 and I noticed a great difference on a 62 inch Toshiba DLP versus several non upconverting DVD players.

Hey, I'm new in the extraordinary world of high definition video, so this might be a stupid question. I just purchased the DVP5960 to use with my LG HD tv. I connected the HDMI cable from the player to the tv and put in a HD dvd. It loads for about 2 minutes and then says no disc. Is a HDMI player not capable of playing an HD DVD?

It has nothing to do with HDMI. The Phiilips DVP5960 is not an HD-DVD player. It will play SD-DVD. You need an HD-DVD player to play HD-DVD.
