"Resident Evil - Japanese version" is up at Amazon Japan for pre-order as of today. I'll refer to my post in HDD forum's import forum as Amazon Japan links always get broken when posted here.

Not yet.

Considering the poor attention to quality exhibited on most Bollywood DVDs, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Toshiba plans Hindi films in HD DVD format

Toshiba to launch HD DVD player next month; plans to approach Bollywood production houses for introduction of Hindi movies in HD DVDs

NEW DELHI: Toshiba India Pvt. Ltd plans to approach production houses in Bollywood to introduce Hindi movies in the HD DVD format.

The firm expects its second generation, high-end HD DVD player to hit the Indian market next month.

"This (plan to approach production houses) is part of our plans after we launch our product in India," said Pranab Mohanty, head IT, quality expert, Toshiba. "This is a high quality digital video format, which offers crystal clear picture quality for best entertainment."

Hollywood studios like Warner, Universal and Paramount have supported Toshiba's HD-DVD and Disney has backed the Sony's Blu-ray DVD format. However, it is yet to be decided which format is superior, but industry experts say that both products promise higher storage capacity, superior image quality and stronger anti-piracy protection.

Toshiba's second-generation player supports CDs as well as the current DVDs. With the advent of new technology in India, the production houses are likely to undergo a sea change in the production of DVDs and CDs.

"As we launch this product in India, we are planning to hold road shows to bring about awareness among the consumers as well as the production houses," Mohanty said.

On the firm's expectation from the Indian market, Mohanty said, "the consumers always want a better technology, which is up-to-date and can offer the best quality image. We are hopeful that the market will gain momentum soon."

The company would target customers opting for 37 and 42 inch LCDs. However, the company declined to reveal the price of the product but indicated that it would be in the high-end segment.

According to statistics, the global market sales for DVD players and recorders is 370 million units at the end of December 2005 and in Japan, the penetration ratio of DVD players and recorders reached 49 per cent of household at the end of March 2005.

Toshiba commercialized the world's first DVD players in the Japanese market in November 1996 and brought its first products to the US market in March 1997.

Have not seen anything happening in the last 6 months or so. Still can keep our hopes up! :-)

It was postponed by Warner Home Video Japan without any new release date announcement. The same happened to the Blu-ray counterpart. WHV Japan actually does this a lot, they have announced a lot of titles this year in both formats that just got postponed indefinitely afterwards. I don't know why they do that, happened today again on Harry Potter titles - except with Order of the Phoenix which is kept on schedule.

Well, Amazon.de finally shipped my Resident Evil HD DVD, only it arrived as a Blu-Ray disc.

*Sigh* I'm not sure I want the hassle of returning it. I wrote them about this but have no idea what the procedure is with Amazon Germany.
They better not screw up my Ghost Rider order the same way. I swear some BD- supporter at their warehouse is having a laugh

Here's what Amazon.de replied when I informed them that they shipped Resident Evil on BD instead of HD DVD:

Quote:

(Excerpt)
Earlier there was error on our Website, that article "Resident Evil"
was listed as "[HD DVD]".

We have corrected this error and now Article "Resident Evil" is
listed as "Blu-Ray" on our Website. It is now not possible for us to
send you Resident Evil in [HD DVD] format.

So I ordered from Xploited instead. Good ol' Tony!
Amazon charged $39 (incl. shipping) vs. $46 from Xploited. C'est la vie!

BTW, Pro-X, no need to bitch at them, Amazon will take care of you. Their service is excellent.

I received my copy of the German release of Resident Evil HD DVD from xploited cinema. This HD DVD is NOT in 1080p it seems to be in 420p
xploited cinema shows this HD DVD to be "Anamorphic (16:9 1080p Hi-Def) Widescreen (1.85:1) Version" http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/re...e-p-12916.html

And no were on the case does it say anything about 1080P.
My two other HD DVDs from xploted , Tomb Raider 2 and Day of the Jackal both say 1080p on the HD DVD cases and btw they both play fine.

This HD DVD is encoded in mpeg2!

Buena Vista owns Die Hard with a Vengeance in EU, but they're BD exclusive too, so definately no Die Hards on HD-DVD.

I have to say I got finally both resident evils from Amazon de,and they were in HD as I order so lucy me I guess.

I n quality, yes, resident evil 2 looks better, but resident evil one looks really good, WAY much better than the dvd, superbit, or deluxe edition of the dvd's.
It IS NOT 480p, as someone claimed, that sort of things can be check using the proper software, but it is in mpeg2, and it loos really good. BUT, it seems Filmax in spain will release it in december or so, and considering the GREAT work they did with underworld evolution HD, you might wanna wait.

Resident evil 2 looks really really good, and both have a GREAT sound.

Is your HD DVD player hooked up by component cables? Supposedly Resident Evil has ICT enabled and will only output 1080 if you are using HDMI.

I checked my copy out and over HDMI it is definitely 1080, the DTS-HD track is great. It looked to me that there is some blooming of highlights, but since they used MPEG2 the encode is probably optimized for shadow detail which appears to be very good IMHO.

well since I use the add-on of the xbox to get true 1080 pircture I use vga and it looked as I say fantastic!!!

I use HDMI/DVI. I have my Toshiba HD-A30 conected via HDMI to my Lumagen Vision HDP/DVI via DVI. The Output from my HDP is DVI and i connect my Pioneer pdp-5010fd via HDMI. I use in this case optical cable to conect to my Pioneer A/V from my HD-A30.

Yes the sound is 5.1 DTS and yes sound and sync are good. And yes my Lumagen reports 1080 both in and out. But i think thats only because of my HD-A30 up converting to 1080. I will see if my Lumagen is doing something to the RE DVD picture qulity that makes the playback look so poor and report back. btw this is the first time i have seen a HD or BD DVD use MPEG2 to encode. And i have over 150 HD/BD DVDs.
I hope that the problem is with my settings on my Lumagen and the RE DVD plays well.

I'm pretty sure DVI loses the HDCP encryption, so in terms of ICT, only HDMI with HDCP will allow full picture quality. DVI and component can't pass the HDCP-encrypted signal so will throw away pixels when ICT is on a disc.

So far, I don't think anyone in North America is using ICT - it's unfortunate to see European manufacturers using ICT
