Imports: HD-DVD Import Releases and Guide - Page 28

Just noticed a couple of new (not new releases, but new to the sale) import HD DVD sales at Xploited...

Added to the sale list now are:

Leaving Las Vegas (UK Import) $19.95
The Graduate (UK Import) $21.95

I wasn't personally interested in those, but noticed they were newly added to the on-sale list.

Yes, the Dolby TrueHD audio track (in Japanese Underworld release) is in English. There's also a DD+ English track and a Japanese DD+ track. Japanese subtitles are fully optional. There are no subtitles in other languages.

Yeah... my amazon.fr order has shiped.
les gendarmes will soon be mine. This set took forever (or so it seemed) as it was first set at early november 2007. I was thinking it would be pushed back again but no. It was not.

Cheek it out. At the warner site.

I also got a sheryfa luna CD. Which looks like a good. CD. I've been trying to find more of a pop/rock CD. Which this might be. I've got edith paif which is very good. But not really my favorite style.

Are there English subs?

I can't seem to find any info on this one regarding audio, subs, also can you give us a quick synopsis on the film?

I don't know used disc stores in Shinjuku but there might be some there as well, I don't usually spend so much time looking around there. Shibuya's Tsutaya has some unbeatable prices on some used Toshiba Ent. releases, e.g. Finding Neverland has been 980 yen there. Last time I also saw Resident Evil (Biohazard) there but it was 3600 yen (about the same I paid for it new from Amazon Japan).

Bic Camera in Halc building in Shinjuku has a reasonable HD DVD selection at 10% off MRSP (+ 10 % in store points if you have their bonus card). Yodobashi Camera shops in Shinjuku also have fairly good selection of them but at MRSP prices (+10 % points if you have their bonus card).

Try also Bic Camera in Yurakucho if you have time and in Akihabara there are a few shops: Sofmap in "main shopping street" (10% off), Ishimaru Media shops (MRSP), the biggest Yodobashi Camera shop (MRSP). Bandai HD DVDs are not available in many shops and most often at MRSP.

I've got Freedom vol.1-3 as well, hopefully can get the rest as well

Well I ended up finding a used flawless Jersey Girl at Tsutaya Shibuya for 20 bucks. I checked a few of the other Tsutaya stores and didn't find any other used discs that cheap, one of the tsutaya stores was charging 38-40 dollars for used discs like finding neverland, and they wanted 30 each for the used Band of Brothers discs. They did have Oldboy used for 20 bucks, but I didn't get it because I know it's without subtitles.

I picked up Biohazard from Ishimaru for 38, and I only found one store that had Equilibrium in stock (Yodobashi Shinjuku) so I bought it on the spot for full retail (50 bucks). I've been here for over 2 weeks now and have not seen Equilibrium again in any store. Infact I've only seen Jersey Girl in one other store and it was full retail new. I have a feeling some of these Toshiba releases will be very hard to find soon.

Also while rummaging through the Book-Off store in Ogikubo I found the FREEDOM 'Previsited' SDDVD that I've been looking for, flawless for 9.50$ used. It comes in the same size case/slipcase the HDDVDs come in, and it had the original nissin freedom tv commercials, a making of documentary and the freedom 6 minute prequel anime that is downloadable on the HDDVD. Any fan of the show should pick it up, even though there is no english subs of course.

Overall I am impressed with HDDVDs presence in Japan, even though the bluray selection in most stores was like 5-10x bigger. One of the Yodobashi stores I went into had a pretty big HDDVD toshiba setup with all the gen 3 players running on 3 different flatscreens showing movies, was cool to see.

Thanks for the advice again Kannisto

Good to hear about your findings Lately Tsutaya has been drying up when it comes to good cheap Toshiba Ent. releases. I have pretty much collected all the earlier Japanese releases that I could possibly want by now so I'm pretty well covered already anyway. I usually pre-order all the new stuff from Amazon Japan. Equilibrium became available in HMV Japan's online store again the other day but it's true that it's quite hard to find in B&M stores nowadays. It has been that way for a while already. The Machnist is now marked by HMV 's online shop as "Deleted by the manufacturer", I wonder if that will become very hard to get sometime in the future... I could still see it in a few B&M stores recently though, more so than Equilibrium.

Usually there are always a couple of 3rd party sellers in Amazon Japan offering any earlier Toshiba releases (though not often at very good prices). I got some from there.

I also think that HD DVD presence in Japanese electronics stores is not bad, many big stores have reasonably good selections right next to their BD sections. New releasing keep coming out pretty nicely as well.

Heh, you could start buying in the right color too I like to pre-order my discs most of the time but with Blu-ray, when it comes to other than region A areas, I find the possibility of region codes so annyoing that I don't even think about importing. In Japan the local releases are pretty expensive so I've always been an active importer starting with DVDs back in '97 or so. When you order online it's not so different whether the shop is in the same country or not, just a matter of shipping cost and delivery time + the occasional language challenges. Major reason for my HD DVD preference has been the lack of region codes that enables trouble-free importing With DVD it was easy to get region free players but that has so far been lacking with BD.

Check out what I found in the Blister store in Shibuya the other day:

The Limited to 1,000 pieces Casio G-Shock Freedom edition. The pics don't do this watch justice, it's really cool. It has the EDEN logo on the face where the casio logo usually is, and where it normally says "Since 1946" it instead says "Since 2103" lol. The back of the watch features more freedom logo engraving, and when you light up the watches night light, you see the FREEDOM logo underneath the LCD. If you can pick one up somehow they are only 154$ retail.

They also had some cool autobot/deceptacon G-Shock editions, but I'm not a big enough Transformers fan to get a watch like that.

I was looking at a site overseas for the Jack Ryan Collection and it listed is a PAL. Is is correct the XA2 won't play these HD-DVDs unless it "hacked"?

Thanks
Their is no PAL/NTSC with HD-DVD.
Likely an error on the site as some places just use the standard DVD layout still.
So go ahead and order it.

Try cheeking Ebay as you might be able to find a North American copy. As their are still sevral out their.

Highdef is Highdef no matter where you are. Pal/NTSC was just a standard definition thing.

I agree with Claw97000. The PQ of The Island is top notch. Not only that, The Island is also a great (and fun) movie.
Any word on the quality of Tristan & Isolde? I enjoyed that movie (I may be one of the few) and would gladly grab a copy now if the release was decent instead of waiting for a potential Fox release.
