Let's settle PS3 attach rate once and for all - Page 6

More evidence that HD-DVD's attach rate will continue to increase

Interesting read, but I don't believe they have 60% of the market no matter what numbers they say. Sony and Toshiba have been using Fuzzy math for some time and this format war is going to get ugly this summer.... The whole BetaMax verses VHS is a joke, Beta didn't have the backing of the studios and VHS did, especially the Porn studios. Blu-Ray currently has more backing than HD-DVD so I find it ironic that his analogy is used.

Wow, Toshiba lowering its HD-DVD player sales estimates by 44% right after trying to sell HD-DVD players at "give away" prices! This is fantastic news for HD-DVD.

Consumers who are buying Playstation 3 are buying it as a game console. They're simply not buying it for watching as many high-definition movies as Sony said they would," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment

The RED folks seem to be completely baffled by the PS3. In one reference ALL PS3's are being used as a BD player and in the next reference VERY FEW are being used as a BD player.

You've missed it, haven't you?

I mean the point.

You've missed the point.

Toshiba haven't said that HD DVD players will drop from the estimated 1.8 million to 1 million in '07.

They've said that TOSHIBA HD DVD sales will only be 1 million.

Do you really think the other 800,000 people will just up and say "Oh, I can't be bothered"?

Nope.

Couple this with Toshiba obviously thinking "We'd better get rid of these players quick! We'll not sell them in 6 months' time, even at $199!".

W-e-e-e-l-l-l? Has the penny dropped yet?

You are the only one baffled. All PS3s are COUNTED as Blu-ray players, but relatively few are actually used as one. Is that so hard?

Research done the first 6 months after the PS3 launch showed that around 60% of PS3 owners had purchased at least one Blu Ray movie. How is that very few? It's a majority.

As to "Attach Rates". Does anyone have verifiable data as to the number Blu-ray disc sold? The number of devices used a BD player? Does anyone have verifiable data as to the number HD DVD disc sold? The number of Devices used a HD DVD player? If you do not have such data then posting statements or numbers as facts is against AVS rules. Opinions are OK but they are to be noted as such.

Stated as an opinion: The RED folks seem to be completely baffled

Stated as a fact: You are the only one baffled

6 months would put us at April this year. In April this year the BDA announced it had just sold 1,000,000 BDs.

Where does this 60% 'research' come from?

There are maybe 1.5 million PS3s in the US, 60% of which would be 900,000.

How many BDs have been sold?

Are all PS3 owners only buying one each? If not, where are the others?

Are BD standalone owners not buying any BDs?

Either the BDA are down-playing the number of BDs sold, or the 60% figure is absolutely miles out.

Verifiable data? Yes. The BDA announced sales of 1 million BDs in April, with HD DVD saying they weren't far behind, and Sony announced sales of 1.5 million PS3s in April.

Around the same time HD DVD announced the sale of its 100,000th standalone, with BD saying they weren't far behind.

That should give you some sort of clue to start with.

Of course, I'm sure both sides might have spun their figures slightly, but they'll be there or thereabouts.

Ultimately, the main point is that, in April we had a situation where HD DVD had sold slightly more players, but BD had a disc sales lead of somewhere between 70:30 and 60:40, despite sales of a million and a half PS3s (15 times greater than the number of standalones on either side).

There is no other way to dress this up than to say an absolutely massive number of PS3s has given BD a relatively small lead in disc sales.

Did the BDA count the PS3's bundled copy of Talladega Nights as a disc sale?

When this was discussed previously, the answer was determined to be, "No." Likewise, the 5 free disc offers from HD DVD do not count to the sales numbers.

I just have to fire up this thread again. This one was always good for some humorous reading.

This is not specific to attach rate but I would like to add that my local Blockbuster finally started carrying high definition movies on the shelf for rent. It is excellent that they are carrying them in the BR format. If there was only a way for Sony to record all of my rentals and attach them to my PS3. That would help those pesky attach rate numbers out a bit. I inquired if they would be adding a section for HD-DVD and they replied "not at this time since BR is winning the format war".

I think most people who have $600 to blow on a gaming console also have a HDTV [~$1k or more] to go with it, no?? Therefore, future movie purchases/rentals for them will likely be the highest possible PQ format at their disposal, Blu-ray. [Rationale: future proofing their movie investment, enjoying their huge investment in their PS3 and HDTV.]
