Sony str-dg800

Hello, I am new to this site and have a few questions. I just bought a new sony str-dg800 reciever along with polk audio RM6900 speakers and a sony SXDR KDS-60A2020 tv and sony dvp-nc85h cd/dvd player with hdmi progressive scan. Now if I can just get it all hooked-up and working to its potental. The problem is after hooking up the hdmi up from my dvd player to reciever to my tv. I can only get sound output through my tv speakers. In the reciver manual it reads " When playback component is connecteted to this recieverand this reciever is connected to the tv by hdmi, the sound is output from the tv speakers only. " Are the optical hookups almost as good as the hdmi or should i return this reciever and get another? Also, do any of you have this reciever? What do you think? How should i hook it up? Option #1 hdmi from dvd to reciever and hdmi from reciever to tv and audio from dvd to reciever. Or option #2 hdmi from dvd to tv and optical audio from tv to reciever? Also i will be adding HD cable soon. I have 2 hdmi imports on my tv and 2 on my reciver. What do you guys think?

With that reciever there would be no difference between connecting it with optical vs hdmi. If i were you, i would hook the dvd player to the tv through hdmi and connect a digital optical cable between the dvd and receiver. There will be absolutely no difference in sound quality in the real world, or even theoretically.

This will take care of DVD player. You'll get video on the HDTV and surround audio from your speakers (mute or turn down TV speakers). Since the audio is digital coming from the player optical = coax = HDMI (if it were available).

DVP-NC85H (HDMI OUT) >> HDMI cable >> STR-DG800 (HDMI DVD IN)
DVP-NC85H (DIGITAL OUT COAXIAL) >> Digital Audio Cable (Coax) >> STR-DG800 (DIGITAL DVD IN COAX)
STR-DG800 (HDMI MONITOR OUT) >> HDMI cable >> SXDR KDS-60A2020 (HDMI IN)

For your HD cable set top box (STB) with HDMI OUT, add the following.

STB (HDMI OUT) >> HDMI cable >> STR-DG800 (HDMI TV/SAT IN)
STB (DIGITAL OUT OPTICAL) >> Digital Audio Cable (OPTICAL) >> STR-DG800 (DIGITAL TV/SAT IN OPTICAL)

With this overall set-up, select the correct HDMI INPUT on the HDTV and from then on you can switch between sources (audio and video from DVD player or STB) using the STR-DG800's remote.

BTW, I only suggested the audio coax and optical connections to take advantage of the default set up of the STR-DG800 - simpler.
