Closest service center is 3hr away. I thought about the UPS options too, but wasn't sure how large it needed to be since I'm sure the AVR can draw a lot of power (especially peak). Maybe that doesn't matter (obviously I don't know much about UPS).

I'm assuming you're not planning to run the 805 or other devices on the UPS when the power goes out so you should be fine with even the smallest size unit. Even the little 350VA unit should keep the 805's memory safe for weeks if it's just sitting there since we're talking well less than 1 watt drawn in stand-by. I checked some of the small APC Back-UPS units' manuals before making the recommendation and they don't specify a maximum connected load so assume the wall is the limiting factor (15/20 amps). Essentially, your 805 would just be plugged into the wall and the battery would only come into play if the power sagged or went out.

FWIW, I have a 5 channel Adcom, 2 channel NAD, source devices, the 805, and a front projector (w/200+ watt bulb) all connected to the same 15 amp outlet via a non-UPS power center. I think my attic fan may be on the same circuit as well. I have yet to have a power shortage. There's usually a large difference between potential maxium current/power needed and real world usage. Unless you always listen at 11, you should be fine. ;-)

i just got a used txsr805 and it makes a ticking noise every once in a while, especially if i put a little pressure on the top, near the back center. and when set to all ch, stereo, it only plays the front two speakers, then after a couple minutes it will all of a sudden play all speakers. i'm wondering if by chance anyone has had these issues and if there's an easy fix, without having to take it to be fixed. thanks.

I haven't but if I faced this issue I would start with a factory reset...all of your settings will be lost with the reset.

A bit of a sad day...sold my 805 locally (no shipping/paypal/ebay fees) for $209...hands down my favorite piece of gear over the past 4 years....have a replacement 1009, so far so good with it...but the 805 will always have a place in my A/V heart smile.gif

The HDMI board on mine went out in January. Having scanned the forums I learned this was a very common problem. I know the warranty expired, but all that means is that I won't buy the brand again because this sort of failure shouldn't happen in such a large percentage of units. I'll never buy another Onkyo again. I had pretty much bought Elite receivers since the mid 90's and took a chance with this one.

Eying used hdmi boards on ebay, but I don't want to take the chance that I buy a bad one or that it's not actually the board itself.

You need to look on the bright side. I would be happy if mine failed now. It would give me an excuse to buy a brand new receiver with the lastest and greatest bells and whistles. One thing the 805 lacks is the ability, over HDMI, to show the volume overlayed on top of the video. I've had mine since the day the 805 was released, and its still going strong (I think over 5 years later).

Also, what do you contend is the percentage of units with the same HDMI failure? How do you determine that it is "a very common problem". In reality, you have no way of knowing the total number of 805 units sold vs. the failure rate, and then compared that failure rate to other comparable brands. By reading forums you get a skewed outlook, as typically people post on forums with issues -- not "everything is working fine".

In defense of Sorka's observation vis a vis HDMI board failures being a "common problem" on the 805: when one reads the posts on this forum, there are quite a few posts that mention that problem. Even some other other posters have said this is a common problem; and, some of those posters have advised others to ditch their 805 if it is still operational.

But, on the other hand, surely the members of this AVS forum, and specifically those who own an 805, are not the whole of the 805 user base. So, when one views the entire base, perhaps the HDMI board failure could not be considered a common failure.

There are many of us who have NOT had a problem with our 805. Perhaps, when viewing all the problems reported here, we should feel lucky. In my own case, my 805 has served me well (bought used off of Ebay) for 3 years. At the suggestion of a number of posters, I installed a fan over the HDMI board.

What I'm trying to say is that we shouldn't jump on Sorka based on his observation of failures based on this very forum.

I just bought an Optoma HD3300 which now allows me to run1080p and 3D where my HC1500 did not. After reading though this tread it's obvious that I can use my PS3 to play 3D through the receiver but what about Direct TV. Has anyone tried watching 3D football, olympics etc.. through the receiver. Since it's not 1080p 3D does it work?

thanks

I don't think anyone's being jumped on here. Ceasar1, as have I and others over the past few years, are trying to remind Sorka and anyone else that needs it that you can't judge a device's reliability based on a few failures discussed in an internet forum. I understand frustration with a failed component and certainly don't intend to minimize someone's experience with such, but we simply don't have the necessary data to say the 805 has any more problems than receivers from Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon, etc.. One easy question to ask. If Onkyo were truly producing such badly designed/built receivers every year for the past 5 model years, would any vendors still be selling them?

And yes, I literally mean "a few". There have been a few very vocal posters in this thread in the last year or so that would have you believe every 805 is destined for failure the day after the warranty expires. Somehow they tried to link Onkyo's admission of a component problem in a run of certain xx6 models' HDMI boards to the 805 b/c they had an HDMI failure in their 805s. However, I'd hazard a guess that you'd find less than 20 unique posters with an HDMI board failure going back over the 5+ year life of this thread.

I don't think those of us with functioning 805s should feel lucky or those with some sort of out of warranty failure should feel unlucky. It's just statistical distribution and a few folks will, unfortunately, fall on the short side of the target MTBF. Even a hammer has a MTBF.

I'll take my old 805 that works vs. a brand new 616 that has all the bells and whistles but could fail at any time...

This thread and the SC-05/07 thread will forever be classics.

Onkyo and pioneer were at the top of their game with these receivers. I don't know why people are selling their 805's. I would keep it forever.

Hello,
I could not agree more. Both my former 805 and 875 were sold to close friends who live where I do and remain flawless. The 805 still offers everything needed and what was offered for the money was amazing. At that time to get a HDMI 1.3, Audyssey MultEQ XT, THX Ultra2 Plus, and being Made in Japan was amazing, The 805 Bench Tested amazingly to boot by HT Mag.

To me, HDMI 1.3 offers everything truly essential to me. While I just purchased a Panasonic 3D Plasma, I have yet to even purchase 3D Glasses and my AVR, BDP's, and more are likewise 1.4 so it could not be more easy. For me and many others, 3D is not of a huge importance. While I love my 60GT50, only being able to now use $20 Samsung 3D Glasses makes it more likely.

To me the biggest issues with the 805 are lack of HDMI Inputs and a less than stellar Video Processor. All the same, it could cost a huge amount more than what an 805 would fetch on Audiogon to equal its power and feature set.
Cheers.

My 805 is still doing all I ever thought it would. When the 905 I'd ordered remained on back-order for a week, I researched everything I could to compare the two and decided that $1599 vrs $799 was unjustifiable, and I haven't looked back since (July 2007). I will always thank AVS Forums and joerod especially for steering me into the correct choice, and also all the posters here for getting the firmware updates info and equipment, and user expertise (fans and placement, connections, etc.). The 805 is absolutely the best AV purchase I've ever made and if it dies in the next minute, I will not regret it.

My 805 is keeping me from purchasing a separate amplifier as the amp section is basically a 7 channel 125w/ch amplifier. When I "upgrade" to a new aged receiver, I might as well budget for an amplifier the way I see it.

Ditto what you said. This forum has been great! My 805 is still going strong.
I couldn't resist though and picked up a new 809 about a month ago and am loving it. I will either hook up the 805 in the basement or box it up and hang onto it for a while.

Bought the 805 in november of 07 and has worked flawless until a year ago. I have never lost the video but I dont get any audio until the machine is warm(about 10 minutes) then it works fine. I have read alot of these threads and does not seem like this is the HDMI board issue that everyone else is having. Do you guys have any ideas?

I went and bought the Denon avr-3312 to replace it but I really want my 805 back. I like the 3312 but does not hold a candle to the power of the 805. So please help if you have any ideas...Mike

Just an update

I have not gotten a bluray 3d move yet, but I was able to watch the Olympics in 3D with my Direct TV. I bought a HDMI splitter from monoprice and it worked great. I just had the have output 1 run to the HD3300 and output 2 run to the 805. Hopefully will be picking up a movie and will test on the PS3 soon.

Hi everyone. I just entered this forum to try to solve an issue I'm having with my Onkyo TX-SR 805 receiver. I own a TX-SR805 Onkyo receiver that I bought from Amazon.com a couple of years ago. It has functioned perfectly to this day when I turned it on and it started making clicking noises and scrolling through all the listening modes in a continuous loop. I tried switching to another source and realized that all the controls were locked, I pressed almost every button available on the receiver unit and on the remote control and nothing worked. I couldn't even turn the volume up or turn off the unit pressing on the power button. It got stuck on the vcr source where I have a blu-ray connected to a HDMI input and although I can get the video signal to the TV the volume is very low (stuck at 70db and I can't turn it up on the unit's dial or or on the remote control) and the receiver keeps displaying all the sound modes available, from pure audio to the THX and DSP modes. I also tried unplugging the unit from the AC outlet waiting 10 seconds and plugging it again but the problem persisted. I was even unable to reset the receiver by pressing the vcr and the power keys together because the keys simply don't respond. I would like to know if there is anything I could attempt on my own to unlock the receiver. I found out on the Onkyo forum that other people have had similar problems with other Onkyo receiver models, there are even some videos on youtube showing some defective units. I still didn't get any answers from Onkyo Supporto so I'm addressing this forum hoping that someone would throw a light in how to solve this issue. Please help me in any way you can because it's very hard to find an authorized Onkyo service center in Brazil. Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm new here and have tried searching this 750 page thread and am not finding an answer. I recently got a silver TX-SR805 second hand. It worked but the display was out. Thanks to this thread I was able to replace the resistors and get it working. I replaced my old Yamaha and life was good. Then one night I turned it on and nothing. It's not totally dead. I can hear relays clicking when I hit the standby switch and the standby LED comes on. If I hit the switch again, the standby LED goes off and relays click. No display, no blue glow around the volume knob, no sound. I've tried unplugging it over night and I've done the reset thing with the vcr button. I left it for several day plugged in but with the standby LED off and was surprised to find it warm around the vents. So something is happening.

It seems like a great receiver. Certainly better than what I had been using. Is there any hope to fix this or should I just cut my loss and move on?

5 years on and my release day 805 is still going strong. I used the original jig made from a butchered cable and some circuit board to update it and have never had a problem with the 805.

I actually like that the volume doesn't display on the screen as it lets me modify it without my wife realizing that I'm playing with the volume. tongue.gif

I bought the two resistors and replaced them as Cambrian spoke of around page 579. My display did not come back on. I would appreciate any suggestions to recover my display because I do not want to ship this thing to a service center since it is out of warranty.

I'm not a lurker...search the forum for my name and my tricks on re-writting better FW onto DVD players back in the day.

You've so been instrumental with so many posts to help! I took my 805 out of the cabinet on FRI (main TV/Home theater) to upgrade to 1.08 due to the LipSync & DTS Bomb issue I had since day 1 5yrs ago (Onkyo said it was my other components at the time).

FWIW - my unit was a pre-order with the elusive 1.03 MainFW.

The Wife is REALLY on my case and I have issues (she likes her TV/Music). Once unhooked, I realized I was in the 1.00 SOL MainUpdate Club and accidentaly bent the contacts 180 FLAT (but got around it: read on)

I got craftly and built a 10k & jumper override using noting more than some carefully cut flat ribon cable a resistor & snip of the resistor wire to make the jump (I can post pics for those who want to see the surgical process) cool.gif

Anyhow, Good news!! I got to MainUpdate 1.01 using Windows 7 x64 & USB to DB9 connector & thought life was good after upgrading to Main FW 1.08 & loading the latest DSP SW (what a bizzare way to update the DSPs ?!?!) eek.gif

Anyhow...I'm stuck with the E2PROM ERROR...I don't care if I trash the unit at this point as I've slept `4hrs all wknd trying all sorts of combo's of FW from various units 875, 905, FW version up FW version down (it didn't fry my my FLASH...it's a flash chip...c'mon)

I've tried FW from the 875 (no E2PROM ERROR, but also NO Video processor rolleyes.gif)

I've tried the "new" DSP1 #12116A - still stuck with the E2PROM error.

Tried the Save Settings (no luck - did this way to many times...doesn't help)

Here's the versions I've tried:

I'd like to try 1.04 or 1.05 but they're all gone from the net and wasn't sure if you/anyone has these. Or know how to clear the E2PROM error for good on the 805 w/1.08 MainFW***

At this point I'm willing to try just about anything...any help is greatly appreciated. Pls PM me if you have copies of the MOT & ID (versions: 1.04, 1.03, 1.05, 1.07) files for my 805.

I'd hate to throw this unit out mad.gif
